The Sunday Press Villa Gossip

The Sunday Press Villa Gossip

This is great, the lazy mans way of seeing all the rumours circulating in today's press are summarised on BBC Ceefax, certainly saves getting ink on my fingers - perish the thought, not that I buy papers since being online!

So what have the Sunday press in store for Villa today?

Well, a couple of exits and three players being linked inward.

Apparently, according to The People, West Ham will provide competition for Bolton in the race to sign Jlloyd Samuel. The Villa left-back has been excluded most of this season and has admitted he is off to pastures new in the summer. Will Jlloyd be happy to drop a division or will West Ham pull off an other miracle escape act? Oh, and who, apart from the bubble blowers cares?!?!

Another exit due, and again according to the People, is midfielder Gavin McCann. This contradicts reports suggesting McCann, along with Olof Mellberg, will be offered new contracts in the summer. I think Gavin has always given 100% but to get to the next level, we need better. Brutal but that is football.

And inward?

A few re-hashes really. The Sunday Express are saying Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc was seen in the players' lounge at Villa Park, this has been reported before and the Polish player has been linked to a summer move. Bit of a yawn that one?

The News of the World say that Craig Bellamy is a target. Well, that isn't exactly new news is it? We also don't know if it is accurate although reports have long linked us to the Liverpool striker.

The other link in the same paper is to Middlesbrough's Jonathan Woodgate. Good player, not sure about the person and certainly not a great injury record. I'll leave that one in your hands, what do you reckon!?!?

Would it be a record if a player came to Villa from Boro? Got to be a first, although he is only on loan at Villaboro.

As a regular follower of Scottish football, I have to say Craig Gordon is by far the better bet from North of the Border. Please.

Wouldn't want Woodgate though, fantastic player but spends more time on the injury table than Laursen, Berger and Delaney combined....no thanx!

If only Laursen could stay fit. Mellberg is so better with him. It's a difficult call because if we buy a centre back and he is fit who do you leave out? The right back berth needs filing. MON hasn't comented on Bardsley even though Bardsley's been making the right noises. Doesn't seem keen on him? Haven't we been linked to Simek of Sheff Wed, a right back?

Agree that right full back remains a problem position for us. Bardsley is still relatively young, so could well over time prove to be a capable defender, but as of right now, I'm not sure he's what we're looking for. Woodgate, very good central defender, but as has previously been pointed out, poor injury record. As for a goalkeeper, know nothing about the merits of Boruc or Gordon. Have never seen them play, so cant comment.

Woodgate is quality - he was superb against Utd at the weekend. He's also made it through his first season back in the Premiership unscathed injury-wise which has to be positive. Laursen looks good when he plays but can we really plan with him in mind? Even if he stays fit, it has been said on a number of occasions that he will struggle to play three games in a week when required. Still think we should be looking at Distin aswell. Both would give us more mobility at the back - better distribution, more pace, higher quality. And that's exactly what we need to be looking at.

I like the sound of Distin but wonder whether he could get over the mental anguish of playing at Man C. Is he just another football mercenary. Really want Matt Taylor. Really want that young guy Curtis Davies from Albion. We really need a defensive midfielder to let Petrov go forward and use his natural abilities more often.

"QUOTE":::There is precident Col, we got Magic Mers from Villaborough in 1998, what a fantastic buy he was!!!!!!!!! Villain Of The North. But he was a Boro player by name only, Mers was to classy and skillful to ever be a real Villaboro player. I rest my case.
