Should McCann & Mellberg Re-sign?

Should McCann & Mellberg Re-sign?

Vital Villa asked, in a poll suggested by Sir Norm of Listman,

Should McCann and Mellberg be offered new contracts?

Results:

Yes, both of them 21%
No, neither of them 11%
Olof Mellberg only 66%
Gavin McCann only 1%
Unsure 1%

Bit of a thumbs down for Gavin McCann, although I must admit as a squad player, we are surely better to keep him for another season or so as long as we are also adding quality in midfield?

Smiler pulled us through when others were low on confidence. Bottom line belongs to MON, if he gives him another year, thats ok with me.

Probably a bit harsh to ditch smiler like that, he has done a job for us. Would be a useful squad player I think but not a first team regular.

Mccann was one of our best players at the start of the season. We just need another battleing midfielder to relieve some of the pressure from maccan, and at the same time, give us more options in the midfield department. united, chelsea, liverpool, all the top teams have a few options in midfield to play against differant styles. If we got rid of maccan, who has been quite a good player for us over the years for us, would be completly absurd. he has only just hit a bad patch over the last few weeks, otherwise he has been ok, admitadly we need someone better than him, but i think he would give us differant options if we did sign another midfielder The only possible reason would be if we signed two proven, quality defensive midfielders, which i think will be very hard to come by in the summer.

Central defense is a major problem, and those positions need evaluating and improving upon if we are going to progress. Gavin McCann, way too limited for what we should be looking for in his position. If we want to stand still, keep, if we want to progress and move on, quality new faces are required, in both areas.

It wouled be a shame if it had to go to Ridgewell, because he has a very poor excuse for a beard

Both should get one year contracts but expect squad player status rather than than first team regulars. It's naive to think two replacements could come and slot in straight away. The experience, effort, and loyalty of these two should not be lightly discarded. On the beard stakes, could Monty Panesar play at the back?

think we should keep both.Would have mellberg play more than mccann.think we get rid of laursen as good as he iswhen he plays not a safe bet wit his fitness.Rumor has it a bid for nigel okey-kokey from west ham this summer so think him and mccann and gardener would be good competition for each other. maybe even bring scott parker to a club that would value him unlike those magpies.
