Martin O'Neill on Craig Gardner

Martin O'Neill on Craig Gardner

Martin O'Neill has 'a lot of time' for 20-year-old Villa midfielder Craig Gardner whose future he says is bright AND at Villa! 'My own view is that Craig has been a bit unlucky this season. He got into the side and then he got injured but he, most definitely, has a future here at Villa. Most definitely.'

'He is somebody that I would think, with this season gone, is a strong lad and I have a lot of time for him both as a person and as a player as well. I know that sounds crazy when he has not been in the side recently but mark my words, he has got a chance of being a proper Premiership player.'

He is certainly combatative and doesn't seem to get phased by the 'stars' as he goes in tough tackling anyone. Nice to know another of the Villa youth players are rated and have a chance of building a Villa future.

Can't remember the last really tough midfielder we had, maybe Andy Townsend who was always a 100% player and didn't mind getting stuck in.

Lets hope he can emulate Townsend. Townsend was a true leader who has never been replaced.

All looks good for next season. Give the kids a run in the inter toto.

He definitely has potential, and its good to read MON offering genuine words of encouragement. Local lad, Villan too, that has to be a plus. Gives his all, and never hides, and has a decent amount of ability too (obviously!). Tear 'em up next season Craig.

And only 20 years old, Its nice to see such a young player doing the buisness rather that been added to the list of players with "potential"

have to agree aspinall, also think davis is a lot better player than craig on what i have seen so far, really cannot understand why martin keeps over looking davis when the centre midfield is clearly not performing.

Jeez yeah,Davis should be given another chance, what is MON playing at ? He had a poor start to the season from the standard he`d set the year before but for gods sake.........

Its great that we have so many young players in the squad, but i just think MON is trying to balance out the first team a bit with what he has to work with. I think we will see more of Luke,Craig and co next season once MON has told them how he wants it work on the pitch.
