Dutch Midfield General Villa bound?

The weekend press have linked Villa and Manchester United to 22-year-old Dutch player Wesley Sneijder. The tough Ajax midfielder has played 121 times with 38 goals for Ajax and also has 31 caps with six goals for Holland.

According to wikepedia, Sneijder made his debut for Ajax in a 2-0 win at SC Excelsior on 22 December 2002 when trainer Ronald Koeman, troubled by an injury-filled squad called him up, advised by Danny Blind, the then-coach of the Ajax youth-squad. He rapidly established himself in the role of midfield general. Despite his slight stature, he is strong on the ball and his passing range is enhanced by his two-footedness.

He will do for me, a midfielder who can assist with the scoring, could be the one to take the pressure of the strikers, or give other midfielders a kiss in the grass and show them the way fwd.

Must admit, I like the Dutch players, seem to remember Arsenal doing 'fairly' well with a couple of crackers!

Excuse my ignorance, but I know absolutely nothing about the player, so I cant really comment as to his suitability. Suffice to say that if we as a club have done our homework on him, and he looks the business, then that will definitely do for me. We certainly cant afford to go into next season with the collection of midfielders we currently have at the club, thats for certain.

If it's a choice between us and Man Utd, I'm afraid to say at the moment there's not really much choice.

It'd be great to get someone like him, but I think ManU will see him as a long-term replacement for Scholes.

I can't believe he's only 22! Seems to have been around for ever!

My Dutch friend has this to say about him : Small midfielder, offensive, good pass, arrogant, not consistent, young. Good technically but not tuff imho. He cant control the midfield - but can distribute. I guess we will have to wait and see...

The Dutch league is little better than the Championship. Our midfielders would all shine over there. I can't imagine Man.U. being interested unless they've given up on Hargreaves who's the obvious replacement for Scholes.
