'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lerner Knows Villa Reality

Martin O'Neill has spoken about Villa owner and chairman Randy Lerner saying the American knows success at Villa won't come at the drop of a hat and that patience will be needed.

'Has this been a reality check for Randy Lerner? Absolutely not. For somebody who was not involved in the game directly up until August, it's amazing how greatly he's realised the situation. He's been involved in sport with the Cleveland Browns and he is well aware of the facet of winning and losing and how difficult it is. It's not as if he was coming in here thinking he just had to get a club, add two players to it and suddenly take off from being not so clever to being absolutely brilliant overnight.'

'In fact it's quite the opposite. He is very, very aware of how difficult it is and I think that's half the excitement about it. Randy Lerner has been true to his word. He said he would be supportive and that he would prefer to stay in the background. He said help would be forthcoming if it was needed and I think he realises all those things. So everything that he's said all along, from our first meeting, he's supported it.'

O'Neill continued on the official site about the holy grail of the Champions League: ''Getting there takes an awful lot of hard work, takes an awful lot of good play and takes something better than we're capable of at this moment. But that doesn't stop me from thinking that's where we'd like to go at some stage.'

that's where we'd like to go at some stage. Errr next season would be nice.

He obviously went into the purchase of the club with his eyes wide open. He'd done his homework, and was no doubt well aware that this would be no five minute quick fix. There will be set-backs along the way, there already has been, but its slowly coming together. I've only been really disappointed with two performances to date so far, Citeh at home, Fulham away, and while I'd very much welcome an improved run of results, I still remain convinced that we're on the right track.

I would think in all honesty he knows what has to be spent to challenge for the top of the table.

I'd love to know his private thoughts as to our recent form and our slide down the table. He has to be concerned right now.
