What You Think Of Stiliyan Petrov

Vital Villa asked, in a survey suggested by Jonah, what do you think of Stiliyan Petrov so far?

Seems the majority are happy to give the summer arrival the benefit of the doubt as 60% voted 'great potential, needs more time'.

3% said he was a 'great signing'.

3% thought he was 'average but doing ok'.

That left 31% 'not impress so far' and 3% saying 'waste of money, must do better MON'.

Our latest poll asks for predictions for the Arsenal game.

Since his debut which was outstanding he has gradually got worse. He goes missing too often for my liking. As for his set pieces, the less said the better. Hope he proves me wrong.

First couple of games he seemed a fantastic buy! then his form and effort has steadily gone down and down from there.

The Premiership is littered with players who flattered to deceive in their first season. More often than not this involves overseas players experiencing their first taste of life in the league. Look at Drogba and Terry Henry as perfect examples. Petrov is quality ..... but it is a disappointment to us all that it has not happened for him straight away. In previous years there would have been fans on his back, this would have made the situation worse and we would probably have sold him for a lot less than we paid. However as fans, I think we are starting to understand what is required to help support a player as he tries to 'bed' in with his new club. He gives 100% and that is what we expect and that means we should give him 100% in return. I think we can trust M'ON to do the right thing if, next season, Stan does not start to score and create the goals that can take our club to another level. It must also be realised that if he should bag 5 or 6 goals in the remaining games he could still finish the season as one of our top performers.

Totally agree with VOTH. We've lacked goal's from midfield for a while, and require a box-to-box midfielder. We've expected a lot from Stan this season, possibly too much?... We've looked to him to provide the creativity of Merse and the engine of Tayls. A lot to live up to but I believe he is a good, creative and skillful footballer. Good balance, good feet, good awareness. He'll come good....

He still has to prove to the faithful that he was worth a punt at the start of the season, I wonder If MON had more time when he first took over if he would have grabbed at this transfer so quickly.

Unfortunately 7-8m doesn't get the finished article nowadays, paricularly as we can't offer cup football of any description. I think he'll come good, providing we can get some steel in midfield.
tarzan
was so good v West Ham that there has to be a good player in there somewhere, maybe we won't see the best of him until next season?
The Fear
bazzah do you remember steve davis scoring 9 league and cup goals last season from midfield..? why has he been so ignored this season..? i think davis would be more effective than petrov at the moment in the center of midfield after all that is where he played last season and was voted our player of the season.

I love the guy. Rate him very highly. Think he's one of the most complete footballers we've had at Villa Park in a long, long time.

I agree with you glensider

I think we'll see the best of him once he's had a full pre-season. Let's not forget what a big jump in quality there is between the EPL and SPL. If MON signs a quality midfield battler, it may take some of the pressure off Stan
Geordie_Villa
Think stan is quality and will prove so next season , he is the type of player if he comes good that we have been lacking, give him a full pre-season and the time to adjust and we will reap the benefits ,!!!

Lets face it, the Stan knockers forget that he has turned several impressive, consistent performances. I agree that he hasn't been consistent, but then who has (GB apart) this season?
