Still A Place At Villa For Delaney

Villa captain and all round great player Gareth Barry still believes that Mark Delaney can prove his fitness before the end of the season, and earn a new contract.

Delaney, who has been out of action for the last 45 years (ok maybe not that long but it has been a while) with a serious knee injury has been told by Martin O'Neill that he can still have a part to play in the club. The defender is currently recovering from his knee injury from the guy who has fixed up Martin Laursen (twice) Dr Steadman.

Barry said: 'I am sure if Mark is fit he will stay here. He has been a loyal member of the team and the club should look at that when they make their decision.

'He has got great experience and, when he's fully fit, he is a great player. When we were having a good run four or five years ago, Mark was a big part of that.'

I agree, Aaron Hughes came in but didn't have the same marauding, attacking style as Delaney. Phil Bardsley is doing the job for Villa at the moment, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

best of luck to Mark is all I say. I want him back for sure.

I agree with Fear on this one too, however it's going to be tough for Delaney to get back into stride after such a long time off. What I like about him is his awareness of play around him & flexibilty across the defensive line. But whatever happened to the old fashioned full/wing back? The overlapping runs to the by-line in an attempt to put the ball into the danger area? We've had some good'uns at the Villa over the years, Alan Wright, Chris Price, Kevin Gage, Earl Barrett, to name a few. Do we have any coming through the ranks or are we going to have to go in for the likes of Luke Young / alternatives this summer? (Would love us to have a crack at Bale for the left as well!)...

FEAR? FEAR? He's on bloody holiday I just wrote that!

If we bought Luke Young there would be some right confusion!! Luke Moore, Luke Young, Ashley Young!!! Is there an Ashley Moore anywhere we can sign? It would be like some kind of football Royal Flush.

Theres a place for a fit Delaney but will there be a place in the squad/new contract for a player plague by Injury. Its a shame as he is not a bad defender when he is on song.

Good full back when fit. Definitely worth a pay as you play contract. I would like him to stay at the Villa, get fit and then compete for a place with Bardsley who I hope we will buy in the summer.

I dont mind, as long as he gets his teeth sorted I feel he's worthy of a place!

Good full back when fit. The punch line is familiar to all.

I hope he goes in the summer. We made him a millionairre and it seemed like he picked and choosed when he wanted to play for us. If wales were playing tomorrow he would declare himself fit. He is a good player but I am tired of injury prone players, and there tireless quest to get back to fitness.

We hold the upper hand right now. Clubs are hardly going to be falling over themselves in the rush to offer him a contract.
