O'Neill Won't Get Carried Away

Martin O'Neill has said he is very happy with the partnership of new boys John Carew and Ashley Young but says it is too early to draw any conclusions.

He told the official site:

'I am delighted with both of them, John and Ashley. I am delighted they have played well. It was important for us to go and get a bit of quality in January. For every reason under the sun, the whole squad was crying out for it. The very fact they've come in and done so well together is encouraging. But I am surprised people draw conclusions about things so quickly. I can't change it but if John and Ashley had come into Villa and fallen over themselves, people would have said they were a disaster. Ashley has got terrific ability and things don't seem to bother him too much. Him and John have come in and given us a lift at an important time.'

'But the two of them would prefer to be judged over a season. I don't think the two lads themselves are carried away. They are happy but they, like me, are thinking, 'Let's wait a wee while. It is encouraging they have got to know each other's play almost instantly. I don't want to knock it. I just want to be careful. There is a lot more to come from them. They have given a lift to the players, the likes of Gareth Barry, and it augurs well for the future but I'd hate to get carried away.'

Nice to see a bit of reality, but I'll stick with the going overboard theory and dream these guys, plus a few new additions will shoot us towards the Champions League and a few decent cup runs next season!!!!

At the end of the day (It's a game of two halves...) Being a football supporter is all about having faith and belief in the future of your team. Over recent years this faith and belief has been very difficult to sustain. All of a sudden we've got faith (in MON & RL) and belief (that we might actually a. win something sometime soon & b. get into Europe). So, yeah, lets not get TOO carried away - yet. But I think us long suffering Villa fans deserve the luxury of dreams. Don't you?

I'm coming back up to Villa Park in March for my second ever visit for the Liverpool game and one of the things I'm most looking forward to is seeing these two in action. I remember Carew from my Champ days! WHilst we shouldn't get too carried away, it's difficult not to embrace some oh-so-sparse (save this season) positivity coming out of the Villa. Up the mighty Villa!

The proof of the pudding is in the "sticking the ball in the back of the net" Eating, thus far they have looked the business but only time will tell if it is to be a marriage made in heaven. I think so far so good.

They still have a lot to prove. We haven't yet scored more than two goals in a premiership encounter this season, so there's definitely room for improvement from our strikers. Would be nice in the short term to see JC and young Ashley put that dismal statistic to bed this weekend, while in the long term continue to forge and develop what looks to be a strike pairing with possibilities.

Its nice to have good things to get carried away with after so long with a glass half empty. I'm having real difficulty staying realistic at the moment!!! Here to winning thenext 11!

Still think we need another quality proven striker to play alongside JC.
