'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Friday's Transfer Talk Including 14m Striker Bid?

Martin O'Neill has again stated it is important that Villa look to strengthen the squad but says Villa won't be caught out paying stupid prices. 'If we can do that it will be great. If we are unable to do it then it won’t be through a lack of trying. You don’t mind paying a bit over the odds but if it becomes outrageous then you decide to leave it. Every club in the Premier League is in a similar situation to ourselves, thinking wouldn’t it be nice to add to it.'

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has apparently warned he would rather 'walk out' of the job than sell striker Kenwyne Jones who has been linked with Villa and Tottenham.

A report in the Times says that Spurs and England striker Darren Bent is being used as bait in a swap deal with Kenwyne Jones could be on his way to Sunderland, however, with Spurs stepping up their attempts to sign Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones by offering the England international in exchange. And the Sun say Spurs have bid 13million for the striker we are also said to be after turned down by the Black Cats.

In an exclusive by James Nursey in the The Mirror it is claimed that Villa are on the brink of a 14million bid for Spurs striker Darren Bent

The report says O'Neill is a fan of the 24-year-old striker and had tried to muscle in when he moved from Charlton to Spurs for 16.5million. The striker has 12 goals in total this season for the White Hart Lane outfit, 7 in the Premier League, 4 in Europe and 1 League Cup goal.

The Mirror article says that Bent would go to Villa not only because we are Champions League candidates but also due to the large number English international players already at the mighty Claret and Blues.

James Nursery further claims that Harry Redknapp might try to get a swap deal despite Randy Lerner having the funds for a straight cash purchase with Nicky Shorey (who has been linked with Spurs before in this transfer window) or former West Ham midfielder Nigel Hokey-Cokey being potential targets. With the Hokey-Cokey now playing at right-back he might well be unsettled and fancy a trip back down to London. I would think that would get mixed reactions from Villa fans, what do you think?

Bent's Wiki entry, not always the most reliabale stats wise but a good guide: Click Here

According to the wiki stats, in a struggling Charlton side he had a 1 in 2 goal ratio. England U21's he has played 14 times scoring 8 goals and he has earnt 4 full caps for his national team as well. For Spurs he has appeared 47 times scoring 13 goals (that must be PL goals I'd assume) and a fair number of those appearances for Spurs would have been from the bench before Sulky boy Dimitar Berbatov was sold.

No way NRC can go. INVALUABLE member of squad. Darren Bent or Kenwynne Jones would be excellent. What about cash plus Shorey for Gareth Bale?
krfeskivilla
can we not go for kaka, we only have to up the bid to 110mill! only joking, i would seriously think about leaving football behind if we started spending those amounts on 1 player, back to darren bent I would be very happy if we got him, he would fit in very well with MON plans for world domanation!
eltoro
Lets keep NRC and pay the cash. Bent would be a very good buy in my mind, but surely he would cost less than 14 million, more like 10 million in my book?
erv2005
Keep Hokey, Buy Bent, Offload Shorey in some kind of part exchange for Bale. I reckon under MON Bale would be twice the player he could ever be under Harry 'the ballbag' Redknapp.
Mancuni-villa
We cant really afford to lose squad members, pay the cash.
young_jonah
I agree bent would be a fantastic buy,NRC can play in two or three different positions and do a sound job that is something not a lot of players can offer(mind you a few of our players can now thanks to the intelligence of o`neill).Give them shorey and 7 or 8 million and it would be a great deal for us.
lerneravfc
i will drive shorey down there, he is cack. coker cant go anywhere though, to important at the moment.
Stig
im meeting james nursery (nursey) for lunch later - I will see what I can get out of him!
leelindsay
AC Milan this is Dr Evil calling, we want Kaka and we will be willing to PAY..... ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS! um um! Dr Evil this is 2009, oh!. ... we want to buy Kaka and will be willing to PAY................. ONE HUNDRED MILLION POUNDS!....... um um! Dr Evil, now your just being a c4ck!
eltoro
The more I think about Darren is Bent, the better it feels! reckon MON will get him back to his best.
In MON we trust!
Bent would be fantastic and if Spurs buy anoter striker (hopefully Jones, I don't rate him half what other people do) it could happen. Loving the realisation, that NRC is still an important player for us. Its amazing how people can go on about Jones (someone who has shown very rare flashes of actual quality) improving no end. And then when it comes to Nige who is near enough the same age and has much more experience they say "he'll never be in our first team, he can't improve anymore and we're too good for him now."
PTP
Would be very happy with Bent, as you say I think MON would get him back to his best, which was very good!
splatt
darren bent please! proven goalscorer. scored 20 goals in the season charlton got relegated! him upfront with gabby, and crosses coming in from young and milner.....sorry.......just drulled on my keyboard :)
rhymez1
Spurs fans I work with think Bent won't leave as it would just leave Spurs with 2 decent strikers, Pavlychenko and Defoe...they have Frazer Campbell I suppose but only only loan.
olofthegreat
Another link to a player from a bottom 3 club, lets get him. The last player we took from a bottom 3 London club in the January transfer window worked out quite well.
Hoss The Villain
I'd love to see Bent at Villa but as I have pointed out before he will sadly be cup tied for UEFA
Villan Of The North
I thought after Feb its ok no?
PTP
i would prefer Kenwyne Jones, but I still think Bent would fit well in our attack. But I am not sure how he can partner Gabby, as they are very similar. But maybe he can hold the ball up better than Gabby. Having said that, I think Gabby has been briliant this season, even in his lone striker role! But Bent or Jones would be excelent additions, either or, or then again both!
villa_de
After Feb you can only play in the Champs League if you have played in the UEFA cup PTP not the same comp.
Villan444
Get Bent MON, I can already think of a few chants that the witty terraces could use. Speaking to a couple of Spuz season ticket holders the other day who were living for the "On the P155 my Lord" chants and rated the Villans as the best away support at their place so far this year.
Villan444
I know you can use stats to prove anything you want if you do it the right way, but after looking at Wikiredia, he may not be a bad buy. Stats for goals per game ratio taken from Wiki: Darren Bent 2.51 Wayne Rooney 2.86 Kaka 2.70 Cristiano ronaldo 2.66 Dimitar Berbatov 2.33 (2.80 in EPL) Robbie Keane - 2.77 Emmanuelle Adebayor - 3.05 Didier Drogba 2.57 Roque Santa Cruz 3.56 Kenwyne Jones 3.13 It don't mean we should buy him, but the lad scores goals!!!
VILLAMAD
Or games per goals even, it looks better that way LOL!!!
VILLAMAD
Bent would be a good buy for us but 10 - 12m tops. I dont rate Bale so they can keep him
medzy
No, we don't want to get rid of Nigel - too many people don't appreciate how solid he's been for us. Bent would be a great signing, so would Bale. Jones would probably improve under MON and in front of Villa's midfield. Can we sign someone please ?
