Villa's Man Of Match v WBA

The Vital Villa man of the match votes are in for the Baggies derby game win.

No real surprise that Stiliyan Petrov once again won, this time with a not too shoddy 48% of the votes.

Luke Young, who could just have easily won given his performance was second with 14%.

That left:

Milner (10%)
A. Young (6%)
Friedel (6%)
Davies (6%)
Reo-Coker (3%)
Barry (3%)
Sidwell (2%)
Agbonlahor (2%)
Laursen (0%) (not often you see that?!!)

We also asked for the pre-game prediction with 76% saying win, 13% a draw and the rest a loss.

Our latest poll, suggested by Gareth3 asks, from 4th, what is the minimum position Villa must now finish for it to be considered a successful season?

He is a top quality player.

Controversial I know, but I reckon Luke Young was MON's buy of the summer. He's been absolutely boss since day 1.

Carson for me! I can't see how you could vote for anyone else.

Petrov was outstanding yet again. It is no coincidence that our worst week of the season (losing to Boro & the Barcodes) coincided with his injury. Luke Young has also often been close to MOTM many times this season. For all the (deserved) praise heaped on Ashley Young and Agbonlahor, Petrov and Luke Young are also vital cogs in the Villa wheel.

Stan is the man! How many MoM's has he won now, surely the most?
splatt
Luke Young has been amazong too.... I bet he can't wait to get back to RB though, surely Don Fabio will give him a call up if he does!?

R.E new poll - Have voted for 5th as this would be an improvement on last season and therefore IMO a successful season. I know I will be gutted if we don't get 4th or better although once the dust has settled if we do finish 5th I will probably be fairly contented. But lets not think that way ay?!
Adam Deuce
Stan has come along way, not so long ago people were doubting him, maybe we should give all our new players enough time to settle then we may see the best of them. (Shorey for example)

I'm very pleased for Petrov. He has shrugged off the flak and become a valued team member at long last.
SuperTommyJohnson
Cant wait to see Bouma back in the LB, and Luke in his proper RB! We will be great at the back then.

I agree L. Young was best buy, but best and most consistent player has to go to Petrov. He just keeps getting better and better - would just like to see a few more 30 yard screamers from him now.

Stilyan Petrov is heading for the 'Player Of The Season' award if he keeps this outstanding run of form going. The guy looks one class footballer. After championing his cause through even through the dark days though, when he certainly wasn't a fan favourite, I'm going to ignore him on this occasion and admit that I cast my vote for Luke Young.

Another very good all-round team performance I thought, as has been the norm over the majority of the season, certainly in recent games. No one has stood out as head and shoulders above the others, yet all have played their part, and given their all. Teamwork, the key to our success I think.
glensider
agree that Luke has been great, didn't think we were getting such a good player when we bought him in the summer. Also can't believe the turn around of Stan. Top player for us now.
The Fear
Petrov remains something of an enigma. While many Villa fans have finally come round to him this season, O'Neill appears to have bent over backwards to accommodate the Bulgarian. Granted, Petrov's performances have been far better this term but his passing is economical rather than incisive - it is not difficult to keep possession when you go backwards and sideways all the time - and he is neither athletic or combative enough to be a modern-day holding midfielder. Those comments might not sit comfortably with some Villa supporters or O'Neill for that matter, but, having watched Petrov on a regular basis during the last two-and-a-half years, I fail to see what he adds to an otherwise excellent side.

Stuart James - The Guardian 14/01/2009

Any thoughts?

Blimey, Heathfield, I wish you'd put quotes around that paragraph - I had my cutting reply all ready to come back at you before I realised it was a quote from the Grauniad! :o) IMO, Petrov had a tough ride when he came to us, probably for a number of reasons, and has 'toughed it out'. He never hid, even while some fans were pretty viscious, so good luck to him. As for Stuart James comments, he's entitled to his opinion. I don't share it!
BobTheBuilder
Sorry BBB - just like to keep peoples heart rates up around here, it burns more calories!!! The rest of the article is very complimentary about Villa, but II couldn't quite see why he included this paragraph. Like you say, he's entitled to his opinion, even if it's wrong!!!
