'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Monday's Aston Villa Press Transfer Talk

Quite press day today. The main focus seems to be in the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail. Both have expanded on last weeks rumour that we are after Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones.

Both papers say that the Trinidad & Tobago international striker is our main target and quote around £12million.

They claim that after missing out on Jermain Defoe, Craig Bellamy, Roque Santa Cruz and Emile Heskey, Jones is our focus. Heskey is apparently staying at Wigan until the summer when he can move on a free, with papers stating he has a pre-contract with Liverpool. Not sure how we've missed out on Bellamy or Santa Cruz though? Neither player have moved anywhere despite reported bids from Man City which according to the press have been turned down. Some reports are suggesting that Sam Allardyce would want around £20million for Santa Cruz in order to persuade him to let go of the player who is already on record as wanting out. Bit much that though isn't it?

The Mail says that Villa's main scout Ian Storey-Moore was at the Sunderland v Middlesbrough game at the weekend. Well there you go then, conclusive proof!

Apparently Sunderland don't want to sell the star and have already rebuffed an approach from Chelsea. Again, not sure on that one as I read that Chelsea weren't in the market to buy anyone this January.

Not sure he would be worth £12million would he? I don't know much about the player but he has just 5 premiership goals + 1 in both the FA Cup and League Cup.

There are a few repeats of the rumour that Newcastle want Nicky Shorey who appears to be surplus to requirements at Villa just 6 months after moving from Reading and would be prepared to use Charles N'Zogbia as part of the deal.

The Manchester Evening News, amongst others, has the story that Bolton manager Gary Megson is interested in signing Villa miss-fit Marlon Harewood

12 goals in 45 games for Sunderland, 3 in 13 on loan at Stoke, 19 in 71 for Southampton and 4 goals in 35 for Trinidad & Tobago.

In conclusion, I don't think he's the answer.

FFS!!!! Why the hell aren't we after Podolski?!?!?! He's available for 9mill, which is the same quoted price as Doyle, which is just crazy!! He's a young, proven scorer, with european experience. It's an absolute no brainer. Instead we're linked to expensive unproven players! So frustrating!

Please remember that nowadays, most things you hear in the press are rubish. We don't let much get out of Villa Park. Considering you name is In MON we trust you'd have thought you'd have a little more faith in our manager to get the right bloke rather than the right name.

In MON we trust - as well as Podolski being, young, cheap and proven the only club linked is his old club Cologne but they cant raise the money. Surely if we made a bit he would want to move!!! I have said before that even if he is woeful, his Germany national team performances would ensure his value would not drop to less than 9m. He is a top top striker who would add so much for our team. I would honestly say that he would be enought to get us a top4 finish and that he is better than RSC, Heskey, Doyle, Jones, Bellamy, Defoe etc. etc.

What you have to remember lads is when was the last world class player MON ever brought to any of the clubs he has managed in the past ?.. If your hoping for Podolski then expect Doyle.

Finally deano.avfc, somone who agrees! This boy could be a Villa hero for years to come. Just can't fathem why we aren't in for him and agree he is better than any of the strikers we have been linked with. Fear, any chance you can call MON and give him a nudge?!! Especially as he has come out today and said it's hard to get "quality" in the January window....ffs look outside the UK!!!

Very true Yatesy. Why the hell hasn't anyone brought him yet!? His style is perfect for the Prem...I just can't see this one failing. Anyway, I'm going to try and forget about this one as it's winding me up thinking about it!

Jones or Benjani would suit me just fine. Better than crap like Heskey or Owen. Doyle as a last resort but i agree about podolski. The touble is podolski just isnt Mons thing and you cant be too fussy in this window. Mon could be planning a big suprise so you never know.

If Podolski came here, who's position would he replace?? A player like that would want 1st team football guaranteed, not to mention the wages or the fact that everyone bar Carew, Laursen and Cuellar speaks English as their first language. Quality player, no doubt but not mid season when he would take time to adjust to the pace of the Prem as he hasn't experienced it before and we haven't got the playing time spare to get him up to speed. If Carew wasn't injured, and we didn't get any more injuries then I would say we are fine with what we have got but Marlon is shocking and the Fonz is too young. Doyle or Kenwyne Jones are the only viable options.

Couldn't disagree more Villan444. He is more of a finished article than Gabby and would enable us to give him a rest, which he is crying out for. You also have the option of playing them up front together. He speaks perfect english, so that is a floored point. His style is also perfect for the Prem, so he would have no trouble fitting in. He is very strong and quick, which is exactly what the Prem is and has a great eye for goal.

Gabby would want to be straight back playing after a week's rest In MON we trust!, then when big John is fit again who would sit on the bench. I know that there are rumours going round that he won't play for MON again but even if he doesn't and you play Podolski up front with Gabby which looks quality on paper then who misses out from midfield. It is good to have options and I think that he would be quality in the summer but also think that he could upset a very happy team and dressing room in which people know their place at the moment. The likes of Marlon and Zat don't complain about not playing because we are winning without them so until we started losing they would have to wait. If a superstar like that came in and expected to play, the team would be looking over their shoulders even if we are winning. MON likes to play the same players week in week out ala Carson even if they are playing badly anyway. Whoever MON goes with, it will be the right choice as your title suggests.

why dont we just wait it out, Carew will be back, be like havin a new striker. Then in summer, get more strikers in, I mean if possible add to the squad in Jan. Nut all is not lost, if we dont sign a striker.

We need a striker but we also need that something different as well. Someone like Niko Krankja at portsmouth. Someone to give us more creativity when teams sit back and defend.

Kenwyne Jones is just the sort of player I'd love to see at the Villa, especially if he plays like he did last season. The first few months he took a while to settle in to things, but for the last 6 months or so he looked a real handful, a not disimilar player to carew, big and strong, good in the air and got a good touch on the floor too. A good all round front man. Personally, and this is completely against anything MON tends to do, I'd put in a cheeky 20m bid for Tevez. He wants a new contract, he'll pretty soon want regular football and he's arguably the most all round striker in the league: Pace, aggression, great control, decent enough in terms of creating for his strike partner too, a good all round striker, and he's young too. But a big money signing isn't the villa way it seems...

lorenzo I will humour your unlikely link and would say that a move for Tevez would really make the other teams around us sit up and take notice - surely Arsenal and even Chelsea would fear us big time!!

I think I'd die of happiness if I saw a player like Tevez come to Villa. But even if we could get him, I don't think 20m would do it. He's still owned by that Kia Joorbachim bloke who's holding out for about 33m from Man Utd. I'd definately give my backing for a Podolski bid, but like others have said MON doesn't like to look across water when he's buying a player.

he must have looked across the water when buying, Carew, Salifou, Guzan?!! :P big signing is a must though, but at the same time we cannot gamble on an unknown quantity. We need a striker that has scored goals in the preimer league.

From what little I've seen of Podolski, which isn't admittedly that much, the guy is vastly over-rated, and is certainly not the striker we should be looking at. Interesting to read that the so called big names of europe are hardly beating down a path to his door.

Charles N'Zogbia has hardly been a first team fixture up at St James Park, and would hardly be interested in a move here to Birmingham B6 without the assurance of a regular starting place. Cant really see MON being prepared to lay that guarantee on the table.
