'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Martin O'Neill's Post Match Reaction

Martin O'Neill told the official site after the 2-1 win over Gillingham 'It was a really difficult cup tie.'

Adding, 'If the players hadn't thought they were going to be in a real cup-tie, they knew they were after 10 minutes. It was just an exceptionally difficult game and I am delighted to get through to the next round. James opened the scoring for us and I thought that first goal was fantastic. It gave us a lift and kept us going but then they equalised and it was all hands to the pump for us after that. Gillingham threw everything at us and the home crowd got right behind their team. They were spirited - so all credit to them.'

He also says that although Villa got the winner, it was certainly never a comfortable win and thanked the fans for making the trip to support the team in the freezing conditions.

He also told the Mail that he was 'delighted' not to have been drawn against Manchester United in the 4th round but would have preferred the tie to have been at home. He said on the potential opponents of Doncaster Rovers or Cheltenham 'It will be another difficult afternoon for us but if you’d said to me beforehand we’d be in the hat for the fourth round, I’d have been delighted to have taken that.'

Not for some lincolnblue. They aint happy if they aint moaning. It was always, as you so rightly say, going to be a tricky little encounter. The important thing is that AVFC is in the fourth round of the Cup, now lets take it from there.
glensider
We certainly didn't want or need a Villa Park replay, even though arguably The Gills probably deserved to get a second chance.
glensider
Mr Sider you are spot on a replay is exactly what the team and manager needed to wake up to on Monday morning.
tomog
now that would have made the press question or credentials as top four candidates.

go question Chelseas - they tied Southend!
los_angeles_villan
They needed another game to hone their skills.
