New Years Eve Villa Transfer Gossip

The Mirror claim, in a football spy article, that Nicky Shorey is assessing his future at Villa after moving from Reading 5 months ago. The 27-year-old has failed to make an impact at the club and is currently being kept out of the team by Luke Young (a right-back) playing at left-back and Nigel Hokey-Cokey (a midfielder) playing at right back (are you following this so far?!). The report claims he is worried at his prospects with Dutch international Freddie Bouma set to return in 2009.

The Sun are again claiming that Liverpool will bid Emile Heskey to take him back to Anfield from Wigan. The red top claims that will knock out the interest from Villa, Chelsea, Spurs and anyone else's names plucked out of the hat at this particular juncture!

The Guardian have added to the press quotes from Portsmouth who said yesterday their players aren't for sale unless big offers come in. The broadsheet says that Spurs have had a £30million bid turned down for Glen Johnson, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe. The latter two both having been strongly linked to AVFC.

The Sun claim that Villa are after Jermain Defoe and that Pompey have put a £15million price on his head.

And that at the moment seems to be that. The transfer window opens at 12 midnight tonight, lets hope it is a good one for Villa, this January could be crucial for many teams fighting for that elusive top four spot.

I have to admit, Lerneravfc, that I don't understand some fans' complete lack of respect for Aston Villa players. It seems as if whoever isn't currently wowing the fans in the first team are fair game for any sort of comment whatsoever. I'd even go so far as to say they are treated as badly as Blouse players on these forums. Why? What is their crime? Nicky Shorey is a pro who has signed for Aston Villa and plays (or not) for our team. That he hasn't (yet) made the grade into the first team is obvious to all. What we don't see is how much work he is putting in, for our team, on the training ground. Why don't you cut our 'reserves' and 'squad players' some slack and start to give the whole Villa team your support, rather than just 11 of them. Happy new year!

completely agree BobTheBuilder we will never win anything with 11 players, strength in depth is crucial and while shorey may not be in favour at the moment he certainly hasn't become a bad player overnight. i also remember alot of people begging MON to sign him a few months ago. im sure at some point this season he will have a part to play. especially as bouma may take some time to get back to full match fitness and i think shorey is our only healthy defender left in the squad who isnt starting.

Just cast your mind back to not that long ago when most people were writing off Petrov. Now look at him.. the great player I'd always thought we signed, even without the praise from my friend north of the border. Still - I hope Freddie returns soon and can be as effective as he was before his injury. And Martin and Big John would be useful returns right now too....

There was also a time when bouma himself wasn't exactly lighting the villa fires either, let's see how it all pans out. I do think bob is right, getting on players backs doesn't do anything. I think we're particuarly lucky that petrov stuck it out at villa after everything some of our fans threw at him.

Would think the comment would be better directed at the manager buying and not playing them though BobtheBuilder? Although I do think some of the boo boys saw Shorey as the new target. I thought he'd been ok for us, it can take time to settle in but sitting on the bench won't help him!?

Not really, JPF. It was posted in response to "shorey is finished anyway", which I think is premature and unnecessary. TBH, I am unhappy with people treating any player who doesn't regularly make the first team like an enemy or a traitor, rather than a member of the Villa squad. As for MON buying and not playing, name me a manager who doesn't/hasn't done that. Even (bless his little cotton socks) SAF! Anyone for Djemba-Djemba? :o)

Yup, follow what you are saying and some do seem to be anti players (the booing when on the pitch in our colours baffles me) but to be fair, the evidence of Shorey not even making left-back when Bouma is out does seem to make lerneravfc's post more of an observation than an anti player rant!

For what its worth, I have faith in Nicky Shorey. You dont become a bad player overnight. O.K., he's taking time to settle, but he possesses a sweet left foot, was a firm favourite at his previous club, and was often on the fringe of the England squad. He has the talent, the ability, I just hope that he's given the time.
