Darn it, I thought the Sunday papers would be full of juicy rumours today, apparently not!
The News Of The World have Spurs boss Harry Redknapp saying the White Hart Lane outfit are 3rd in line behind Manchester City and Aston Villa for the signature of Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe. I am not sure that can be right as the deal was meant to be he couldn't sign anyone from Pompey within 12 months, or so the papers reported recently.
Meanwhile the BBC are quoting Harry as saying they won't be bidding for the England striker because Portsmouth have already received a 'massive' bid for the 26-year-old. 'Arry said: 'I think they've a massive offer from somebody for him, so good luck to them - I paid about £9m. He is a good player but we're not going to pay over the top for anyone.'
Another report claims that Chelsea are also now interested in Wigan striker Emile Heskey who has continually been linked to Villa and Liverpool.
Meanwhile Martin O'Neill has confirmed that Villa have had no contact from Real Madrid over Ashley Young and if they did get an offer, they'd turn it down. O'Neill said, 'We haven't had a call from Real Madrid at all, but maybe that's hardly surprising because I'm not sure they ever called Manchester United either. Maybe not for the first four months they were trying to sign Ronaldo anyway! But it's correct to say that even if they did come in with £25m we are in a position to turn it down, and we would not be encouraging any bids for him or any of the other players in any case. Of course it wouldn't surprise me if Real Madrid or anybody did make an enquiry. I said that Ashley was world class and that's fine. But in any case we are in a position to keep Ashley or anybody else because the players themselves are really enjoying being here.'
SkySports claim that Villa's Wayne Routledge, currently on loan at Cardiff, will join Queens Park Rangers in January.
The Daily Mail re-hashed a recent rumour linking Inter Milan striker David Suazo, currently on loan to Benfica, to Aston Villa, Everton and Newcastle. This did the rounds about a month ago, nice to see the Mail catching up with some quotes from the players agent!
