Villa To Make Jermain Defoe Bid?

Not a great deal in the press today, they are probably recovering from too much turkey and drink. However the People claim that Portsmouth will have to sell England striker Jermain Defoe as their owner Sacha Gaydamak is still looking to balance the books.

The red top claims that Villa are willing to pay 10million for the former Spurs striker who cost Pompey 7.5million last January.

There are also whispers around that the Emile Heskey signing is a done deal and yet other reports say that Liverpool are set to bid.

Time will tell, not long now for the transfer window to open.

Must admit I'd LOVE to see Defoe sign, I banged on about it last year as I thought it was a major mistake not taking quality like that when available. Hey, maybe we could take Peter Crouch off their hands as well to give us some real options up front, afterall he has more goals than Defoe so far this year!

This story was first heard down here on the south coast just before Christmas. Given that he's going through the motions with us, perhaps there's something in it.
UKTony
I'd rather have Crouch. How JD going to fit in with Gabby?
HeathfieldRoad1874
I'd be happy with signing Defoe. As long as he doesn't try holding us to ransom with the wages, as I think he would. 60k a week would be MORE than generous.
Villan-in-Cyprus
Can't see why Defoe and Gabby couldn't play together, would be better than the tired John Carew flicking headers on to no one in particular I'd think?! Nice bit of pace with Young and as.
The Fear
Has he been impressive at any time for you guys UKTony, just going through the motions since Harry left, or has he not impressed you at all?
The Fear
Defoe is a goalscorer and that's what we need, would be a very impressive signing in my book.
PTP
I would love Defoe more than anyone. Then we can rest Gabby from time to time. Then either Crouch or Heskey to play when JC is tired or injured! Think we would really be able to rotate then!

Defo Defoe. Not many instinctive predators about in the Prem. He is in Owens class IMO. I do have a problem with his temperament sometimes, but got to be worth a go, because we could get rid of quite easy if it didn't work out.
ThirtyOne
10M and you can have him guys. Make the offer!
bluedr
No thanks not good enough. MON wants good characters not part-timers. DCrouch a miles better long term bet and goal scorer and team player.
stennyvilla
Why would Villa sell an unprofessional clown like Carew and replace him with Defoe? Anybody?
The Real Neil
Crouchy for me. Defoe is quality but we need to hold it up and i cant see pompey selling us both. NOT HESKEY FOR ***** SAKE
medzy
Crouch and Defoe would be awesome but as Medzy said I can't imagine that they would sell us both. If we were to sign them both I think we can forget about fourth. Third? Second? First anyone? lol
Adam Deuce
Why all the Carew negativity? Ok, that night out and his recent injury = bad! Nevertheless his goal record is 22 in 55 apps since jan 2007. Owen has 25 in 58 since august 2005. Soooo Carew it would seem is as good a goalscorer as Owen, and far less injury prone. He brings people into the game, can be a hellish opponent for centre-halves and could be better this season than last with jimmy, ashley and proper fullbacks crossing the ball in. Think on that...

I'm not anti Carew. I love Carew and can't wait for him to be fit again. Nothing wrong with having options and Crouch and Defoe would be great options.
Adam Deuce
Should have bought him years ago, yes yes yes please !!!! Redknapp saying a club has out bid him for Defoe ???
ASPINALL
Part of the strutting bentley crew. Defo not right attitude and misses more than scores, the david james of strikers. 6-7 mil tops any more and pompey will be laughing.

NOT DEFOE. he is amazingly overated, i want someone that can take us forward not down. Tottenham reject not even good enough for them. Heskey is poor too. Its top class or nothing as far as im concerned, would rather not waist the money. PS carew has been nothing but good for us so i dont know where this is coming from
overlooked_villan
The problem is, overlooked_villan, that the 'top class' you're referring to is extremely difficult, near impossible, to sign in January. All the top class players are involved in the Champions League until the end of the season and clubs won't let them go under any circumstances. Our only option is a quick-fix. 3-4 players who are good enough to see us through to that top 4 finish and cover for injuries. Once we've secured Champions League football we'll be able to attract superstars. Until then, i'm afraid Defoe fits the bill.
Villan-in-Cyprus
Cant say i agree but i cant see where you are coming from. But i dont want to sign anyone for the sake of a signing. I dont mean world class i mean good pros. For example dean ashton and santa cruz. I agree with villain76 6-7 mill, any more its a waist. 6-7 may even be not worth it
overlooked_villan
I am not convinced about Defoe. I did think last year he was the answer, clinical finisher and that seemed to be backed up by the impact he had initially at Portsmouth. I am now little less convinced that his ability is as impressive as I first thought. His tenedency to sulk (Has done so again according to Tony Adams after being left out yesterday), may not stand him in good stead at the Villa. Baby Bentley boy as well, and big mate of NRC I think.....must be the Lahndan thing. Owen would be preferrable as a proven goalscorer.
fatloser
I'd love to see Jermaine Defoe here at Brummagem B6, but I cant see it happening. He'll no doubt end up back with Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane. Sad really, he and Gabby could form quite a prolific partnership.
glensider
Jermaine Defoe and Kenwyne Jones, two players who I very definitely believe would see us achieve that much sought after top four finish. Maybe help us lift a cup too.
