'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Zat Knight Rightly Saluted

Martin O'Neill has waxed lyrical about defender Zat Knight who filled the void left by Martin Laursen both in defence and attack!

The Villa boss said on AVTV: 'Zat's attitude has been fantastic and he's never let his head drop. He was disappointed with the goals we conceded out in Hamburg but once he knew he was going to be playing against Arsenal, his application was absolutely terrific. To go up there at the end of the game and control the ball like he did - with his right foot - and then finish with his left - was incredible. He showed the finishing skills of a seasoned striker. It was tremendous when he scored the equaliser. The noise was sensational - but that's what can happen at Villa Park. It was unbelievable.'

Meanwhile Zat has told the Birmingham Mail about his frustrations at not making the first team. He says that the team have been doing so well he hasn't been able to knock on Martin O'Neill's door to complain adding, 'If I had knocked I would have probably had it slapped back in my face.'

He also says that it was good for him to be able to 'fill Martin Laursen’s boots and keep our run going' and his hoping to be able to keep doing that as he confirms Laursen will be out for a few games.

'The manager didn’t say anything to me before the game. But looking around the dressing room, I was the only fit centre-half. I just had to make sure I got my head right and I thought defensively we did well to keep them down to three shots.'

Great to see him do so well yesterday, he does come up for a fair amount of stick but I am sure scoring in front of the Holte, where he stood as a kid supporting Villa, must have made the frustrations more than worth it!

I agree, fair play to him. He's great for us, cos he's willing to be fourth choice CD. So while he has been blamed for bad errors from time to time he's exactly the type of player we need as 4th choice. Which is why we signed him and let Cahill go, Cahill wanted to be first choice. And his goal was brilliantly taken

I just love it when a "Holtender" is playing well for Villa! Well done Zat! I agree entirely with Jongekki, great attitude, and well played! Not just the brilliantly taken goal, which was well praised even by Shearer on MOTD, but by the brilliant defending too! You were my MOTM!

I'm really pleased for Knight. It was a very smart finish for a 4th choice defender. Villa really have a 'never say die' attitude, which is great.

so nice when a player who gets a fair amount of moans from us fans shows his worth, great goal and good character from Zat.
The Fear
Always gives 110% so I will never complain about him playing!! However, with Laursen out for a month I would be much happier to see Cuellar and Davies in the middle with Shorey left and Young right. It just looks a lot tidier and would make me more confident about keeping clean sheets!!

Yipee aye ay, yippee ay oh! Holte Ender on the pitch!! Good work Zat. Keep it up son.

Is the strange demise of Nicky Shorey the mystery of the season so far?

You gotta love a Holtender playing on the pitch, Get in Son

Well done Zat. Great dedication. Shorey is mystery, I thought he was just starting to play well...hey ho, in MON we trust of course.

Will we see Zat as a last 15 to 20 minute striker now?
BBJ
Zat Knight the new David Marshall ? I do hope not. Congratulations to Zat...... as many others have said he bides his time, gets his opportunity, does make the odd mistake, but rarely lets the side down....good luck to him. Oh and thats goals against Chelski and Arsenal he has scored

Much maligned by many, supporters who aren't I feel prepared to give the guy the credit that many of his performances have deserved.

A fine all round performance by Zat against The Gunners, capped by that superb finish, a finish that many proven strikers would have been delighted with.
