'If It's Football, It's Vital'

An Interview With A Gunner

1) So, strange season all round in the Prem so far this year, exciting or depressing for you Arsenal boys?

Depressing, so very depressing. We have won 7 points out of 9 when playing Liverpool, Man Utd & Chelsea yet we are dropping points left right and centre against to lower placed teams, and if you want to be serious title challengers, you just can't do that.

2) We are being tipped to break into the top four, do you agree we could do it and if so, will it be at your expense or one of the other '4' (I refuse to say big four!)

Well you've made a bloody good start. I personally believe you might just fall a little bit short this season, you don't really seem to have had a blip and when you do (everyone does) I think you might just fall away. But that's just my opinion. That said there's no reason why I can't be proved wrong, and out of the rest of the teams in the PL Villa are the best equipped, indeed they would be my preference. If you do manage it I can't see any team dropping out of the top 4 other than Arsenal. I think Liverpool could have, but the start they have had means they're just too far in front.

3) Do you expect Arsene Wenger to break his policy and spend big this winter?

God knows. I think he will certainly buy, he has to, but spend big? Maybe if the right man comes along. It will certainly be interesting to say the least.

4) Which one player would you have from Villa and why?

I'd take Young. With the sales and injuries we've suffered over the last 6 months we're desperately short in the wide areas and I reckon he could do a real job for us out there. Fast, tricky and an eye for goal. Awesome player.

5) Who should Villa look out for on Boxing day and who scares you the most in the Villa team.

Who scares me most? See above. If we play as high as we did against Liverpool he will destroy us.

With Cesc and Adebayor missing there isn't much to be afraid of. We're lacking cohesion and confidence. But if I had to pick one I'd say van Persie, he's playing pretty well and working hard for the team. Also I'd be wary of giving any freekick within shooting range. Hold on, why am I giving advice? Get stuck in, be as dirty as you like ;)

6) How worried are you what a defeat would mean points wise on Boxing day, obviously it is a cliché to say it but this is a real six pointer and I can't remember the last time we did the double on you guys.

Crapping myself would easily be the most polite way of putting it. I usually love boxing day football but this one will be a real nerve jangler.

7) What do you think of the Wenger to Real Madrid links returning?

It's b*ll*cks. It doesn't (shouldn't) need me to tell anyone that 95% that comes out of Madrid is utter lies and should be treated with contempt it deserves. Arsene Wenger runs our club from top to bottom with little to no interference, he'd never get the same freedom in Spain. There is a reason why here in England we call them managers and in Spain they call the coaches.

Indeed Wenger has already rubbished the rumour.

8) Finally, what is your prediction for the game?

I'd never offer a negative prediction towards my team, so I'm afraid I'm not saying anything.

Happy Christmas Villa fans, wishing you good luck for the rest of the season (though not as much as Arsenal).

"you don't really seem to have had a blip" - We've had our blip. Newcastle & Middlesborough. Let's hope that was it. UTV!

I've just read on the OS that Laursen could be injured. I was then reminded by the Times (see Media watch on OS) that our title challenge 10 years ago was scuppered when Ugo Ehiogu got injured. Oh dear. Deja Vu?
Adam Deuce
Would be terrible news if ML was out, BUT, this time we've got nearly £20M worth of central defenders in Carlos & Curtis to show their worth! Even if Nige does right back duties & Luke stays on the left that ain't too bad is it??? ...and when's Wilf back??? Why are the media singling out Luke Young saying MON's not convinced? From the games I've seen this season he looks a great buy, albeit being played out of position at the moment?!?!?!? I think a draw is on the cards - it'd make my Christmas if we got a further 3 points, but I thought we'd draw against West Ham...
ljkal
...p.s. and when's Big John back? If we can keep Van Persie quiet we just might do it! Be nice to think of the Arse coming to VP in a defensive formation - quite a compliment!!!! UTV.

I'm actually really looking forward to this game, I'm nervous about it, you guys couldn't have picked a better time to play us with Adebayor and Cesc out. But as the Guv'nor says, van Persie has been electric lately, which stands to reason because I slated him something rotten the week of the Chelsea game! I January will be important in who grabs 4th, with Cesc out for 3 months, Villa have a very good chance, particularly if you keep us from winning on Boxing Day. But you also have, like us, a small squad and a few injuries might do for you. If I were a Villa fan I'd want O'Neill to add a couple of decent squad players in January to keep everyone on their toes. If Arsenal don't sign at least a wide player in January, we're finished, simple as that. I agree with Rocky that Gabby and Young have been excellent, due to our proximity to one another in the league I've watched you guys a bit closer this year and personally, I think Barry has been your best player. Young and Agbonlahor do the damage in the final third, but I think Barry really keeps you guys ticking over and makes you play. Barry's performance at the Emirates is as good as I've seen from any opposition midfielder at the Emirates and that includes Pirlo, Gerrard and Fat Frank.
Little Dutch
It should be a cracker of a game. Villa are certainly favourites to take all 3 pts. Arsenal dont have any wide players, and now we will miss Cesc & Ade. So a point will be a good result for the Gunners.
prits
Thanks Little Dutch! I'm gonna write to my Spurs mates and tell them how charitable yr being - they'll hate that! Ha ha ha...
ljkal
All doom and gloom with Arsenal fans this season.......I really hope Vela and Wilshere get a crack at Villa.
Sue_afc
Agree Little Dutch, I think us villa fans are a bit harsh on Barry this season, probably because of what went on in the summer, but he is having as good a season as anyone in claret and blue. I still fancy Liverpool to stutter, I think the top 4 would look better with both of us in it!
pjvilla
With the news fitering through that Cesc is going to be out for the rest of the season (practically) I'd say Villa have the best chance in years of cracking the big four. I'm absolutely gutted.
Rocky7
Unless of course we can tempt Barry away? If only to weaken you lot!
Little Dutch
Nice plan LD - Get Wenger on the blower, we'll sort him out!!
Rocky7
Righto, Boxing Day, I'm taking with me a large holdall and a bottle of chloroform. I'll nab Barry in the car park, have him away in the holdall then lock him in my downstairs cupboard and feed him nothing but vinegar and mustard until he agrees to join Arsenal. Similar to what I did to Sol Campbell back in 2001 in fact.
Little Dutch
lol, you are so right Little Dutch, Barry really is the engine of the team and has so much quality. And no, you can't have him, he's all ours!! :o)
The Fear
Sorry to hear about Cesc, it didn't look good when he walked off. Hope he makes a swift recovery chaps.
The Fear
Move over Gunners, you have had your time. Shame its not Liverpool but we need to cease the day.

Maybe Liverpool will also have a blip and Arsenal will have a decent patch, although this is as shakey I've seen the Gunners for a long long time.
The Fear
Merry Xmas to all Vital Villans! Let's hope Father Xmas offers us with a nice present on boxing day! Up The Villa!
delirium
We will only be half way though the season when the final whistle blows tomorrow so it is far too early to write Arsenal off. If they play in 2009 like they played in 2007 then they could be back knocking at the door. Obviously, I'd rather we were knocking at the door and maybe if MON gets some good guys in during January, we'll be there or thereabouts. Whatever happens tomorrow is unlikely to mean the end of civilisation as we know it. For the record, I think it'll be a draw.

Always a very enjoyable read, this pre-game question and answer session from within the 'enemy camp'. Good to get an insight into what rival supporters are thinking and feeling, and how they view both their own club and ours.
glensider
Agree that there is absolutely no way that anyone can or should write the Arsenal off. It would be totally foolish to do so, even if we lead them by six points after the Boxing Day head to head. At this half way stage of the season, six points is absolutekly nothing, and can be turned around in the blink of an eye. They are a top quality side, one of the best teams and biggest clubs in europe, and are packed full of top class talent.
