Michael Owen May Be Available In Jan?

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has said for the first time that former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen might leave in January.

Owen has been linked to a return to Liverpool but Rafa Benitez has said he isn't interested. Teams who are thought to be interested include Aston Villa (hurrah!) and Chelsea.

Kinnear said in the Independent:

'I'm not confident, to be honest. I'm going to sit down with Michael on Tuesday. I'm pretty confident about everybody else, but Michael is a different kettle of fish.'

Adding, 'He is looking at his options, I assume, but I won't go into those details until Tuesday.'

Big risk injury wise but he is only 29-years-old and is a world class (not a term used lightly) striker. Could he be the player who could get us 4th this season?

If he stayed fit he would certainly be the WOW player that Villa are surely ready for now? Bums on seats? Hmmm. I am willing to drive up to Newcastle to pick him up if needs be!!!!!

He's always injured. Pointless signing. Great player, but never fit, therefore pointless.

Article about this on the BBC site but suprisingly no seculation as to where he will go. Top four won't be interested surely, and we are the best of the rest, so why not?

A striker who can actually score? Owen available in January? We have a winner...

Owen is famous for two things; the first is that he was a world-class footballer who scored goals. That was five years ago. The second is for being totally uninterested in football once he made his money. He will not fit in with the team ethic that MON is building at VP; he wants hungry players who want success for the club first and themselves second (as far as that is possible today). Owen does not fit this picture. His goals per season record is abysmal and he does not deserve a place in the squad in my opinion. And I think MON knows this.

I suppose he has not had an injury for 2 weeks?, i will put money on it, he will suffer another long term injury before the window opens.. That will put an end to that.

AllanW...I've never heard so much bollox in my life. Granted, he is injury prone but to come back from injuries like he's had is not much fun. Endless hours of training for months on end in the gym on your own and thats even before a ball is kicked. So to question his determination or drive to play is just ridiculous. Add to that the fact that he only needs to 10 goals to be Englands all time leading scorer and how can he not be hungry to play with such an incentive to get back in the England team. On his goal scoring record our top scorer this year is Gabby with 7 in 16 games. Owen has 6 in 12 so I make that one every other game in a team thats 17th in the league. Compare that to last season where Gabby managed 11 in 37 and Owen managed that same amount in just 29. For the record Carew was top scorer with 13 in 32 so very similar but as you say "abysmal"! Anyone with half a brain knows that Owen would significantly improve our squad if he stays fit and your comments are just assumptions based on the rubbish your fed from the red tops about the state of the modern game and the greed of todays millionaire footballers.

Thanks for your response themightyatom but try reading what I wrote not what you wanted to read. You quote some statistics from the last year which show Owen to be nearly as useful as Gabby and Carew; my point was over the last five years not one. His goals per season is worse than 11 over this time; not a hot-shot striker guaranteed to get us into the Champions League. As for your other uninformed comments about where I get my information from, keep them to yourself son until you know what you're talking about. Cappello has rightly ignored him until he can prove he is fit. Owen might have a fire in his belly about his England scoring record but that's not exactly what the Villa need right now is it? I don't give a stuff whether he gets to beat Bobby Charlton as it has nothing to do with improving the Villa; why do you think it's important? Just explain clearly how us poor mortals with only half a brain have not seen with your piercing clarity how he'll improve our squad, please? A poor attitude, woeful physical state and long-term scoring absence do not seem to me to recommend him but of course you know better, right?

Type of player we need, doubt we will bid for him though, not a MON type player, i expect to see Heskey.

Players pick up injuries more often when they are demotivated. They struggle to recover, and take ages to get back up to speed. It's a different story when they're motivated and up for. I suspect Mr Owen is "down in the dumps" at Newcastle, and were he to be playing under Mr "England Career" O'Neill, I think things would change radically for him. He'd also get that superstar treatment, that he perhaps wouldn't get at Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. Personally, I think it's a no-brainer for Mr Owen to join Villa.

I cant help but think he'd just be a big disappointment, also are we gonna wreck the current wage structure for him? I dont think it would go down too well. He could sit on the bench for chelsea (who i heard were interested) and earn mega bucks with guaranteed champs league football. Defoe for me. Great finisher and younger

I have my doubts about Owen. He has the talent but I think he only cares about Michael Owen and that he does not care about the team he plays for. If he can stay fit and shows some loyalty to his team mates then yes I would like him at VP but if he does not he can stay in toon.

No thanks, rather Heskey, Bent, Zaki, Huntlaar, Roque Santa Cruz or Lukas Podolski, Owen is over rated and hasn't been any good since he was at Liverpool, he doesn't live up to the name or the high wage he gets either, Agbonlahor is keeping him out of the England squad enough said.

Buy him and Crouch with Gabby and John as well we'd have every option available. I have a real funny feling MON is gonna pull this off. Owen this makes perfect sense to recapture your England place.

totally agree jeffbeck, would make perfect sense for Owen as Capello obviously rates Villa and comes often to see our young and hot talent.

You can loose form but not quality. A cliché which is written for Mr Owen. Would love to see him a VP but if big Phil comes in then he will go to Chelsea for CL footy. We get more recognition now for being exciting to watch but we are not yet the finished article to attract the elite and the likes of Owen. To coin a phrase though "I would love it, love it" (ala KK) if Owen came to VP. I also like the shout for Defoe although he did choose to go to Pomp rather than VP. Quality sniffer though is what we need and Owen is the best sniffer out there.
