Friedel Still Wanting Improvement

He may be in footballing terms somewhat of a geriatric, but Brad Friedel is still hoping to improve in goal and conceed less.

Speaking on the official site O'Neill says the player is showing no signs of 'winding down' because he still has tremendous drive, determination and enthusiasm. He also revealed that Friedel believes he could've done better in some games so far for us and even at his age he's determined to eradicate sloppy and silly errors during matches.

'Brad has been a terrific goalkeeper for a number of years. That was a significant reason for signing him.

'His performances have been fantastic for many years.

'There have been one or two games for us where he felt he could have done better.

'He hasn't been completely happy with a few of the goals he has conceded and it's great he is looking at those sorts of things.

'He is a professional still thinking greatly about his game. He has come to Villa and he really wants to prove himself again here.

'That is very encouraging and it's great to have him.

'It's fantastic to have Brad Guzan pushing him too. I think he has real competition.

'When we went to Prague, I thought Brad's performance was terrific. I think that sort of quality competition keeps good players on their toes.'

Goalkeepers usually get better and better with experience. As long as they stay in peak fitness then over 40s will probably become quite common. All the modern training techniques and better diets will help as well. On the other hand it does help to be a totally dedicated professional like Friedel!

He's starting to show his real class of late - that save from Fellani's header on Sunday proves there's a fine line between winning and (well) drawing! When we signed him I can remember a Blackburn fan saying that Bradders will win us 10pts a season - he could prove to be just as valuable as the required proven goalscorer.
