'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gareth Barry Says Top Four IS Possible

Gareth Barry was asked on Setanta Sports if Villa could break the top four. He said it was different to answer just yet but also added, 'We are confident we can do it.'

Explaining 'We have experience and youth, the belief is there and the manager has instilled that in us, but it is a tough target to achieve. Very few teams in recent years have been able to crack it.'

And speaking from experience having completed a decade at Villa the England midfielder says the manager and player set up is the best it has been adding, 'It is a tough schedule this year, but as the season goes on we will get better and better.'

And more specifically on the top four he says that Randy Lerner has helped build the squad and says 'It is possible.'

He also spoke about Martin O'Neill who, following last summers failed move to Liverpool it was always hard to get a grasp of how the player felt about the manager, especially after he lost the captains armband. Seems there isn't a major problem there though, as Barry said:

'He has improved us massively. He came to a club who had just finished 16th in the league, knew it wouldn’t happen overnight and has brought in players who have improved the squad.'

Im glad he's not playing as well as last season.

Good to read Gareth in such optimistic mood. Personally I think that the top four this season remains just out of our reach still, but, slowly but surely, we're getting there.

Certainly our chances of enjoying a successful campaign have been boosted by Gareth's decision to remain at Villa Park until the summer of 2009 at least.
