Gareth Barry Going Nowhere In January

I'm not saying I told you so, but I told you so! Gareth Barry said at the end of the last transfer window that he would be at Villa for the season and would not talk about a contract or look at talks for a move away from Villa until the following summer.

He has now backed that statement up on. Setanta

In a move that will hopefully kill the obvious newspaper links to Liverpool for our former captain, Barry said on the Friday Football Show:

'I made a statement to say that I’ll spend this season with Aston Villa and hopefully we can achieve the things I want to achieve in my career. I’m 28 early next year so, as you say, years will be slowly running out so hopefully this will be a big year for Aston Villa and we’ll see what could happen in the summer. I’m looking no further than trying to get Aston Villa into the Champions League. I think it would be wrong for me to sit here and be looking elsewhere.'

He also added about the fans reaction to him following the summer long saga: 'My relationship has always been good with fans. Obviously what went on in the summer will probably never be forgotten with certain fans but, as I’ve said, I’ve not got a problem with that.'

Good, the last thing we needed was more unsettling reports in the press throughout January. Hopefully we can bring players in to match Barry's ambitions and maybe grab a place in the Champions League, then he's no need to think of moving anyway!

Be interesting to see which paper prints a 'Barry wants out in January' story first!

The Mirror and The Daily Mail are favourites. Both were made to look very silly by this saga numerous times over the summer.

Glad he has come out nice and early to put this all hopefully to bed until the summer, nice to see him stick to his original statement on this. I have a great deal of time for Barry, I realise that one paper interview wasn't on but he's been a good servant for Villa and more than contributed season on season.

Yep, Great News

he's being celevr, he's seeing if villa do get top 4, if we dont, he's offski probably

recent performances, especially for England, have put his price out of range of most clubs, therefore expect Citeh to stick their noses in!

Top 4 or not, I reckon he's off next summer... unless nobody comes in for him, in which case he's paved the way for himself.

Our very own Jonah told us that Gareth Barry was going nowhere. Why do we now need the man himself to reiterate the point?

As Jonathan so rightly says, its good that Gareth has made clear his intentions, and we now know that he will be with us for the duration of the campaign. The Barry-Petrov-Sidwell axis promises much, and with a couple of quality signings in January, signings of the striker variety, then our chances of a successful campaign become even more realistic.

i can't see Liverpool even wanting him anymore, as Riera seems to have settled in pretty quickly playing out on the left....Barry isn't stupid, so he should see his main chance of getting into the Liverpool team if he moved would probably be left-back, as otherwise he's by no means assured of a place in the middle - particularly given Alonso's resurgence. Very happy if he stays.

Excellent news that he has come out and reiterated his comittment to the Villa cause, even if it just for this season at the moment. January could still be the telling time for us on how long Barry stays though - the right signings to propel us on in the second half of the season and hopefully he won't have to go anywhere to fulfill his wishes.

I fuxing love Aston Villa.

The press will decide all that for us glensider, you know that!!!!

So he's off in the summer then?
