'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Davies Backs Speedy Duo

Curtis Davies has said that given the chance, Ashley and Gabby will do England proud tonight against Germany.

Davies is in line for an appearance himself, but despite that he can't help but praise the flying duo.

'Gabby has terrific pace, first and foremost but he's not just fast - he's also powerful.

'You see some people who are fast but they get knocked off the ball easily. When Gabby's running with the ball he's still strong enough to hold you off at the same time.

'Ashley can put a ball where he wants it - he's got unbelievable delivery. And if you check his Villa stats I think he creates or scores a goal every other game.

'The gaffer likes to buy English - he's signed me, Nigel Reo-Coker, Ashley Young and James Milner. And we've got Craig Gardner in the under-21s too.

'Hopefully we can push on with Villa and perhaps all break into the England team.'

Refusing to talk about his own chance and possible performance tonight on the official site, Davies went onto talk about his first real memory of the England - Germany rivalry.

'That's the first one I can remember, it was a massive game and I remember the chances we missed.

'Obviously being in England we really didn't want to lose to the Germans. I was devastated.

'My fondest memory would be the 5-1 win in Munich. We went down 1-0 early and you're thinking 'here we go again'. But the lads dug in and got the goals for us.'

Depending on the team sheet, I might even watch this one. But then again I might be washing my hair.

Well Gabby certainly made the doubters and knockers sit up and take notice. A fine international debut, very promising, and its fair to say, he looked completely at home wearing the three lions shirt. Well played Gabby.

Pity Ash didn't get a starting place. In hindsight Downing enjoyed arguably his best performance for England, but I think that this was a wasted opportunity to see Ashley perform for the full ninety. What is it with Capello and his belief in Ash?
