'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Stating The Obvious - Milner

James Milner, or whoever asked him this question, didn't have to think too much about the answer. Do we want Champions League football?

If it wasn't such a slow news day I wouldn't bother with this one, but I've been struggling to do something useful on the site all day, and short of staying away and pleasing you lot, I really do have to do something.

Speaking on the official site - see I'm still struggling to come up with something else for that - James Milner has stated that tasting Champions League football is the ultimate aim for all at Villa.

He also believes that cracking the Top 4 will be a very difficult task, but the club are focusing on growth over the long term rather than short term fixes.

'The top four is a tough nut to crack. They have been the top four for a long time. They are quality teams with quality players.

'It will take a lot of hard work and quality performances to break into that. There are a few teams trying to do that.

'The top four have set the standards. We want to close the gap and break into that top bracket. That's the ultimate aim.

'Champions League football is obviously part of the aim. That's what every footballer wants to do - to play at the highest level. We all want that at Villa.

'The highest platform at club level is the Champions League.

'Saying all that, we don't want to get carried away because of one good result.

'We need to take each game as it comes and keep picking up the points. There are no easy games and we need to get into a good frame of mind for Saturday's tough clash with Manchester United.'

So there you have it, on a slow news day this is about the best I can find for you all.

I'm still not convinced we can crack the Top 4 this season, too many other factors come into play and we still have consistency issues ourselves, but sometimes you know what. I don't care.

I just love the fact that the club are trying to now, they are trying to improve and trying to attain success on the pitch.

We may not get there, but at least we can enjoy the ride.

The players must despair when such questions are put to them, but James Milner responds in the only way he can, honestly and realistically.

Very good point about not getting carried away about the Arsenal result. We have a habit over recent seasons of coming back down to earth with an almighty bump, even this MON 2008-09 version falls foul of that home truth.
