Guzan Shows Potential

Martin O'Neill believes that Brad Guzan is a 'great goalkeeper in the making' following his performance against Slavia Prague.

The 24 year old USA international was very impressive in goal last night, saving everything Slavia threw at him. Yes at one point I thought he'd even parried the kitchen sink.

Speaking after the match, O'Neill said:

'I think he's a great goalkeeper in the making, I'm delighted he got his work permit.

'I thought he was brilliant. We're delighted the things we saw in him when he was in America have come out.'

The UEFA Cup bow was Guzan's second competative match in the claret and blue and in some ways he can feel unlucky if Friedel regains his position against Boro on Sunday.

'I've never had any doubts about Brad from when he came over and didn't get his work permit the first time. He's got a fantastic temperament.

'I said to him 'not to worry, if you still want to come here we'll see this through and in six months' time we'll do it again'.'

Again, O'Neill being true to his word. Watching him last night something reminded me of Bozzie in the early years - obviously with Guzan not being as mental - but things he kept doing, I don't know. If he turns out half as good as Bozzie did them O'Neill will have uncovered a gem.

Americans are starting a trend of decent keepers, first Friedel and Keller, and now Guzan... Tim Howard looks more like an exception to the rule now.

Do the lad good to get on the pitch and play so well. Bodes well for the future.

Must admit I had serious reservations about him after seeing him play 'live' four times in MLS. Still have some doubts, way too early to go overboard just yet.

His weakness was collecting crosses cleanly, plus failure to hold on to the most mundane of shots, often spilling the ball, creating havoc amongst the defence in front of him. Hopefully our goalkeeping coaches have been working on these aspects of his play.
