Aston Villa - WANTED - A Top Class Striker

Vital Villa asked for your man of the match votes for the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Monday night.

Looks like a large 'protest' vote has happend as the winner was Marlon Harewood with 41%!

It really was a night where it was hard to pick anyone who shone although of the players that actually were on the pitch for more than five minutes, (!) Brad Friedel, Luke Young and Martin Laursen faired best, all with 10%.

Other results:

A. Young (5%)
Milner (5%)
Reo-Coker (4%)
Barry (4%)
Agbonlahor (3%)
Carew (3%)
Sidwell (3%)
Shorey (1%)
Cuellar (1%)

Our latest poll asks which striker you would like most in the January transfer window with the choices:

Newcastle United's Michael Owen or Obafemi Martins
Portsmouth's Peter Crouch or Jermain Defoe
Wigan's Emile Heskey or Amir Zaki
Reading's Kevin Doyle
Blackurn's (unvailable!) Santa Cruz
West Ham's Dean Ashton
Ajax's Klass Jan Huntelaar
Barcelona's Thierry Henry

Surely it has to be time for Martin O'Neill to really shoot for the stars and try to bring in a WOW player or two, a world class striker or two being the most important part of the jigsaw puzzle we so lovingly call Aston Villa?! Easier said than done I guess?!

Wow I'm surprised at Martins score, he's shed, he wouldn't do it for us at all, rather play Nige.
PTP
Thought he was quality the other night against us though PTP and when fit, often seems to play like that?
The Fear
Went for Zaki, although Owen wasnt a far 2nd.
DeanoVilla
Martins is explosive, an absolute monster...much rather him than Owen (a fit Owen waould be great but he's ALWAYS injured). It's between Zaki, Huntelaar and Defoe for me...
olafthegreat
I would like Owen, if NUFC would accept a fee of 12M or less and if he was prepared to settle for a normal wage and not upset the wages scale. If he could escape injury I think he could soon get back to lethel form and be right back in the England frontline again too!
villa_de
I've always been a fan of Martins so he gets my vote. He was outstanding on Monday night against us and was the main reason we lost - not just because he scored the two goals, but how he inspired the rest of the team.
godzvilla
Thierry is as good as anyone I have seen live on his day.
Villan444
cant believe the support for owen to be honest, he would just cost too much for to little, and way way way to injury prone......Huntelaar record speaks for itself but he would most likely be a target for barca
Astonian Villan
Huntelaar no contest, Man Utd was after him last season and the top 4 are looking at him all the time, supposed to be worth like 25m or something, if we could get him i think he could be fantastic, he is only 25, his record is one of the best, played for SC Heerenveen and scored 34 goals out of 46 matches, and before that he played at AGOVV and played 35 scoring 26, but at the moment he is playing his trade at Ajax the team we smashed :P and has played 90 games scoring 75 goals, for his country he played 22 for the under 21's and scored 18 out of the 22, and plays for the nartional team playing 18 scoring 10, he is a goal machine and would set us up for the Championships League if we maybe brought in another class defender.
Villa 4 Ever
yep huntelaar is the sneijder of this transfer window. he is the man we can all hope we buy but probably won't. would be awesome though. poll: would you rather mccain won and we get huntelaar, or neither.
ric112
Well Huntelaar has heard Villa Park in full voice. That can't hurt. Who'd not want to play in front of a crowd like that. It was awesome. Come on MON. Get him. :)
Adam Deuce
Huntelaar would be good. I also suggest Iaquinta as he is now 4th choice at Juve. Villa 4 Ever, was that a joke? 'class' defender, 'Klass' jan huntelaar - very droll
NorthcliffeBandit
We should have bought Diego Milito in summer!!!!!!
NorthcliffeBandit
Kevin Kuranyi from Shalke, Markus Rosenberg/Hugo Almeida from Werder Bremen?
NorthcliffeBandit
All three good, strong centre forwards, with good goalscoring ability playing in germany, whose league is the most similar to ours (if of overall less quality)
NorthcliffeBandit
..anyone except Heskey!
AVFC4ME
Mario Gómez from Stuttgart also
NorthcliffeBandit
The kind of player I would most like us to buy is a M Owen type. But given Owen's injury record, probable cost & salary, I'd have to plump for Defoe - who I think could just welcome a move to VP now that Harry is at WHL.
Winsforvilla
I think Defoe will head straight back to WHL in January. Huntelaar AND Doyle for me
DoLpHiNaToR
True Fear he was quality against us and he was probably the difference betwean us and them in the end, I never rated Martins as anything near Owen though but maybe I haven't seen enough of him, most of the times I've seen him he's not performed. I haven't seen a massive ammount of him, just his games against us and a few other games. I also don't like the confusion about his age. I don't believe that he is 24, he's been around for too long. I think Owen wouldn't be too unrealistic, if he doesn't sign a new contract at Newcaste we could afford to pay him what he wants, probably through a signing on fee but he would get his money and Newcastle wouldn't get noten. I know alot of people really rate Huntelar, I haven't seen anything of him really so I can't judge but for me, Owen has proven himself to be a top class Prem striker and I think with him on our front line we could be devastating.
PTP
Totally agree I'd rate Owen above nearly any striker in the world on his day and when fit. That is the only issue with Owen (who is still young at 28 - nearly 29) his fitness. IF we could get him and he stayed fit for a few years - it can happen, just ask Laursen! - then we'd have a world class striker. I am with you, don't know that much about Martins, but when I've seen highlights etc he has always looked like he causes defences problems. Know nothing about the age thing though, that one is a new one on me! lol
The Fear
owen get it done MON can get guarntee him England
JeffBeck-TheLeftSide
If it was the Owen of 5 or 6 years ago, definately Owen. I think he's lost that extra "something" to be an elite goalscorer, though. Huntelaar would be great, but, as someone said earlier, we have as much chance of signing him as we did Sneider last year. Defoe would be great and probably my preferred target.
attila11101
DON'T buy Huntelaar - he's not that special at all! We should be chasing Villa or Eto.....although we will probably end up with Defoe if we're lucky!
DutchLion
How people can say they don't rate Owen is beyond me - if he's fit - he's scored - even at Newcastle!!! His fitness has always been the key but then he's played in sides where they have really struggled without him so they rush him back into the team and he gets injured again. At Villa - we could have the luxury of rotating strikers which should keep him in good condition. Either that or buy him on a pay to play basis...
melski
The Owen problems are 1) Fitness, 2) Price! Anyone from the english leagues is over priced eg. £6m for Nugent. I would prefer Kuranyi, two years younger, few fitness issues, 50+ caps for germany, 6ft 3in, excellent in the air, 40 goals in 99 apps for stuttgart, 45 in 107 for schalke and probably cheaper than owen! OK hes not premiership proven, but neither was zaki/torres!
NorthcliffeBandit
Why does Ashton's name even get mentioned? He's decent but so injury prone that it would make no sense to sign him.
gwyllum18
Easier said than done of course, but I agree wholeheartedly. In fact I'd go as far as to say that we need two additional proven strikers.
glensider
Dont know much about Huntelaar Villa 4 Ever, to be honest I've seen very little of him. Didn't you think though that at Villa Park he looked downright ordinary?
