The Team Of 1981 v The Team of 2008

Dannyvellow has rated the team of 81 against the team of 2008. See what you think, do you agree or not?!

81 v 08

Rimmer 9 v Brad 9
Swain 8 v Young 7
Gibson/Williams 7 v Shorey 6
Evans 9 v Laurson 9
McNaught 7 v Cuellar/Davies 7
Cowans 9 v Barry 9
Bremner 8 v Hocky Cokey 7
Mortimer 8 v Petrov 8
Morley 8 v Young 9
Shaw 9 v Gabby 8
Withe 9 v He is bigger than you and me 8

I appreciate that many of you are not old farts like me, but I would value views from those who remember and also the youngsters that study the history books! So not much between them in my book

Like most of them, Mortimer for me a 9 and Petrov a 6 (and will be an 8 if he keeps his current form up) Morley and Young both 9's. Withe and his shin 8 JC 6 (and will be 8 when he gets 20 a season!)
The Fear
Or maybe a 7 for JC?!?!
The Fear
Not sure about that mate, but love the positivity towards to modern side.
young_jonah
Gibson/Williams only better than Shorey by one????? nah mate 9 v 6 surely.
jonah
Oh and Brad is too high compared with Rimmer, only just seen that one!
The Fear
If we take into account the improvement in training techniques, fitness and nutrition, the 08 squad I'm afraid would be all over the 81 squad if they played each other today, BUT if you were to take the 08 squad back to 81, they would get lumps kicked out of them and be calling for their mommies by half time, a time when footballers stayed on their feet and kicked you off yours, happy days : )
steff_the_villan
Stopped reading when I saw 7 fo Luke Young

Ashley is good but Morley was world class. I wouldn't rate Petrov on a par with Mortimer. That said, given the advancements in training, fitness, analysis, diet, etc - the current team woul probably hammer the '81 team if you could some weird time warp to bring them to the present.
GCR_villlan
Friedel is 6 and Luke Young is 6. Friedel has had an awful season but his fine standards and it should be time to give Guzan a chance on Monday and/or Thursday.

I'm not old enough to know about the players of the glory days but surely Cuellar and Davies are a notch above Luke Young? Especially Cuellar anyway.
PTP
If the team of 81 had the fitness, training facilities and diet of todays boys they would probably hammer the 08 team, but we will never know. The fact is they won the league that year, and as much as i would like too, i cant really compare the current team to them, in 2 or 3 years maybe!!! :-)
young_jonah
Mortimer was the driving force in the midfield and definitely worth 9. I agree with the ratings for the stikers.Carew and Gabby don't compare as a partnership to Withe and Shaw.(yet!). As for Morely against Ashley I would rate them both as 9. Nothing between them and both right footers on the left wing.

Realistically, due to advances in training etc, any team from the bottom of the Championship up would beat the 1981 side. However, in terms of their ability compared to other players at other clubs at the time, the 1981 side clearly wins - they won the league, the current bunch have no chance of doing that. Also worth comparing the managers, and O'Neill does very well to come second on that score!

Agree with alot of the comments about how the game has changed so much. Difficult to compare tbh.

Jimmy / Brad was a hard call for me because after Gary Shaw Rimmer was my hero as a teenager and he had a fantastic few years at Villa. I have however been impressed with our American keeper this season. He is a stop gap due to his age and having Guzan behind him looking, listening and learning, it is a typically clever move by MON. Anyway I tried a little to take off the nostalgia specs because I really believe we have a hell of a team for the first time since.............

Interesting thread. Got to agree that the team of 2008 would probably beat the 81 boys but I do think it would be closer than people think and I wouldn't agree that ANY team from the championship would beat them. No-one can argue that players have got fitter and the game is faster but I personally think from a technical view, standards have slipped in recent years. You only have to look at some of those considered "top" players in the league these days - Drogba, Walcott, Adebayor, actually even Agbonlahor, to see that their touch/vision/passing is generally pretty awful. While no doubt they could outmuscle and outrun most of the 81 side, at least you knew the majority of those boys could get a ball down and pass it when they needed to. Generally the players at the very top clubs these days can do it all, but I'm really struggling to remember the last time I saw a match between 2 of the other 16 prem teams that showed genuine quality on both sides and I include Villa in that. Don't think the likes of Gabby and NRC can hold a technical candle to their 81 counterparts of Shaw and Sid.
Londonvilla81
Not to say Gabby wouldn't run McNaught and Evans ragged that is! Nothing wrong with pace but I just personally prefer to watch players who have a level of ball skill way above that of most of the fans watching.
Londonvilla81
If the ref was from 81, players like Gabby and Ash would get their legs broken after they had run rings round them the first time! LondonVilla81, have you seen Walcott on the ball? He has as much pace as Gabby and the control to go with it. Gabby is getting there though, and they are both still very young.
Villan444
If the ref was from 1981, it would be a decent game, and not the fairy, handbag-carrying "football-light" of 2008!
DerryVillan
Different era different game. Ask your self one question in 26 years time will you be able to name our current team with out thinking about it. Team of 81/82 legends all. I hope i live long enough to see another team of legends our current team have a little way to go yet but MON is working on it.
50 years a villan
Derry and you would also not have the players falling over like sacks of sh** at every available opportunity. I include the Villa players in the list of people willing to leave their foot hanging for a freekick.
col8
No doubt Walcott is super quick and I'd have him at the villa in a second but seriously, watch him closely next time he plays. His first touch and control is often awful! He is young though so sure he'll improve. Still take Gary Shaw over virtually anyone playing now though. Most talented attacking player I've ever seen at the villa.
Londonvilla81
You're not comparing apples to apples, its a hypothetical exercise. Fun though!
glensider
Seriously though, todays AVFC havs achieved nothing, why in reality is there a need for comparison. Lets at least wait until todays lot have achieved something of note.
