Martin O'Neill On Wigan Striker Emile Heskey

Martin O'Neill has been talking about Emile Heskey who Villa will face tomorrow at the JJB. O'Neill, who managed the big man at Leicester City said:

'When his confidence is high he is a player, strong, a handful, and he is now starting to go past players again. The thing that has always been levelled at him is that he has never scored enough goals, and it would be hard for him to say otherwise. But the Emile Heskey I know is the one who thundered past the full-back and made the goal for Wayne Rooney the other day. That is the Emile Heskey I fondly remember.'

Adding, on Sky News, 'So I have the utmost regard for him, and what he does for the rest of his life is down to him. If he does allow his contract to run out he will have a number of suitors because he has done very well, and that's of great credit to him. With his contract up in the summer, and with the way he is playing for Wigan and England, it would be difficult not to see him pushed back in the limelight. That's down to him, and to Steve Bruce, who has had a very good influence on his career, and Emile has warmed to that.'

Meanwhile, despite not being able to find the quotes online, it appears Martin Laursen has said he would welcome the Wigan striker if he reunited with MON.

The best target man we have in the country at this present time, which is sad in a way I suppose, but he's done well for club and country.

Like I said in a recent post, is it just me who thinks Heskey is excellent at what he does? I know he used to play for those who shall remain nameless, but he slogs his guts out for the team, holds the ball up really well but can also go past players like they aren't there when he's on song. He's got good feet and he's very strong - Rooney may have got all the press for the England match but IMO Heskey contributed an enormous amount. I guess we'll have a chance to look at him tomorrow - hope he has an off day ...

for heskey to be sucessful you need an owen, rooney, defoe-type striker to get lots of goals playing off him, and we dont have a one of them

I've never been a Heskey admirer, for a number of reasons, and am not particularly convinced that he's either the additional forward we want or need at this moment in time. Still, in Martin we trust, and all that jazz, so if MON decides that he would be an asset to the club, then who am I to argue? Hope he doesn't have a blinder against us tomorrow .

Personally I'd prefer us to spend our cash on a proven finisher, that elusive twenty goals per season man perhaps.
