Gareth Barry - Not Moaning But Not That Happy?

Gareth Barry told Sky Sports that he was surprised to have been put at left back in the 0-0 draw v Portsmouth on Saturday but says he'll play wherever he is asked.

In a baffling move one of our most creative midfielders found himself in defence, after the game he said:

'I was a bit surprised when the manager read the team. I'm not a player who enjoys players running at me too much when I play in defence, I try to enjoy going forward and I hope the manager appreciates that. He had a brief chat with me before the game and said it wasn't a long-term thing, but I know he changes his mind, so I'm going to have to take that with a pinch of salt.'

Adding, 'But I've never been one to moan too much and I'm not going to start now.'

OUCH? That looks like a bit of a dig doesn't it? All not totally well still I guess, after all under successive managers he has been moved from pillar to post and that affected his game, since MON came in he looked to have a more settled role in midfield which has led to more England call ups. So I'm sure he won't be thrilled going back to left back!?

What do you think? Is this the way we are going to convince Barry his future lies at Aston Villa?

Unlike MON to play players out of position.

Play where he's told. End of. MoN has made him an England regular. Oh, and he does moan....anyone remember his outbursts in the transfer window????

MON needs his head examing wasting our best player at left back. Certainly no coincidence that we failed to score with him out of the midfield if you ask me.

It is time for Barry to move definitely. His presence is more disrupting and not helpful and sorry for that, IMHO his body talks for exit in every match.

Couldn`t give a toss about what barry has to say,I won`t forget the summer saga,A few months agao we were not good enough for him so now he can do as he is ******** told and what he is paid to do.

Yep - on your bike Barry - this is quite a serious comment here and I should not be hearing through Vital Villa - on BBC sport or Sky Sports surely he would be torn to shreds!!! We are still waiting for an apology about the Summer but he does not seem to be bothered for us. I just wonder if he was not in the England squad would he give a ****e about us?? Is he just playing well for Capello. I dont care now - he may be one of our best players but to be honest - Sidwell, Petrov and Reo-Coker fighting for 2 centre-midfield places with Gardner and Osborne if needed is enough for me. I cant be bothered with Barry any more to be honest. If I was O'Neill I would be very p155ed of with him but if he is smart (which he surely is!!) I would keep my mouth shut and let Liverpool make another bid - dont make it public and lower the price. Accept 12-15m from Liverpool or Arsenal and then buy a striker (Heskey??).

Blimey, can't believe people want our best player to go... We should be building the team around him. I don't blame him not being that happy being moved about. It does amaze me the blind faith in MON as a man manager. Hopefully you are all right.

***** him, hes been ***** all season bar the spurs game. He aint interested in midfield at the moment so its no great los to see him reverting to left back.

He is biding his time till next window and MON knows it too, so if someone DOES have to shift out of possition it wont be someone he cares about, it will someone he knows is on his bike. Plus he moans and groans so much he must have halved his price tag by now, so Pool will come in and get him cut price.

MACCA UTV - that is over the top - he is our second best player after Ashley and certainly we would get more for him than anyone else bar Ashley. Fear you are correct in what you say but it was the first time that he has been moved about this season and it was just to see how he got on I am sure and he will be back to where he plays best in Centre Midfield soon enough. If O'Neill took him aside and said that - it should be enough for Barry to accept that!!! He must know Shorey is no Bouma (so far!!) and he needed to see Cuellar and Milner properly. Barry should have kept his mouth shut. At least he is moved about BUT STILL IN THE TEAM!! That should be Barrys concern but Capello wants him centre-midfield so thats why he will gurn until he plays there!! Compare his reaction to Luke Young when he got questioned by the press over his switching to left-back - he said that it was fine and he played it before at Spurs and was not problem!! Theo Walcott as well just doesnt care as long as he is on the pitch!! Thats the attitude - cant see Gardner, Petrov or NRC complaining about playing out of position!

certainly agree he'd have been better not having a dig but it is a worry that a senior player like that IS having a slight dig.

there are some real sad individuals on here and its easy to see were pillocks who throw coins emanate from when they can openly be so critical of our best player for years.

Yeah of course avfc48 saying that a player who obviously and clearly wants out of our club should be allowed to leave as we have ample replacements and enthusiasm in Sidwell, Petrov, Gardner, Reo-Coker and Osbourne means that I would throw a coin towards another human being!! I am a teacher and coach and referee three of my schools teams in my own time and would never think of doing any person any harm - let alone throw a coin and be enough of a coward not to come forward. How you can make a link between the two things reflects the stupidity of yourself.

Barry should be in the centre of the park where we need the creativity. For all Sidwell and Nige's running and tackling and Petrov's tidy work, none have the ability and guile on the ball. Bad decisions from MON. I would rather we won 1 game and lost 2 than play out 3 boring 0-0 draws by cancelling out the opposition without threatening enough ourselves. Same 3 points at the end. No need for the negativity though 48. How can you insult people in such a bitter way who are rightly still annoyed with the summers escapades??

I agree with Macca, have you forgot the summer Mr Fear, the sooner we get rid of a player who does not want to play for us the better, and we have Sidwell to replace him aswell.

I think Barry has been superb for Villa, but has fallen below those high standards for much of this season. As for leaving....if Liverpool continue in the same rich vein of form/luck they have been showing this season so far would they see Barry as an integral cog to push them onwards and upwards....because they did nto see it that way in the summer really, otherwise they might well have found the money. GB needs to get back to his best, get his head down and perhaps resist the temptation to have a pop.....

He's been out-performed all season by NRC and Petrov, so if someone needed to go to left back then it's absolutely right and proper that if anyone was dropped to left-back it should be a player who has played there (albeit not brilliantly) before. Think this is proof positive that he doesn't actually give a flyer about the fans anymore or he'd think of us before he opened his cakehole. Buy a replacement and **** him off.

not forgotten it chris, just refuse to get all steamed up. He wanted to move on his career, where are Villa, where are Liverpool? We'd be doing the same if we were a member of staff. They are staff, we are the fans, they move, we don't. One way to keep him was to back up the world class players by bringing them in and not having th emanager bring in Harewood etc. Careers are short and they want to win things, he's been told throughout the last 10 years we'll buy this player and that player..... now with a great owner like Randy we actually can push on, but have been slowish out the stalls when it comes to buying to bring that push towards the top 4.

I think its time for him to go. Everyone seems to want him to go and i agree regardless of him being a villa legend. If a professional footballer moans about playin left back for 1 game he obviously still aint happy. I dont want him to go but his form seems to be suffering badly, for england too. I agree with fatloser, Liverpoo dont need him. Get sidwell on the scene, least he got pace

McGrath, Taylor, Yorke, Merson, Southgate, Staunton, Saunders...the list goes on and on. All legends in my lifetime but ALL moved on. Barry will be the same! We will move on and Sidwell and co will fill the void. He wants to go and we have replacements (and money to buy more) so lets part amicable for a fair price. Simple to me. Doesnt mean I throw coins at linesmen though avfc48 before you get on your high, judgemental, horse.

In my opinion Gareth is wasted when not performing in midfield, but that is just an opinion I hold, an opinion that is obviously not shared by MON. The bottom line though, is that a player has to play where and when his manager dictates. End of.

Very good comments deano.avfc, all of them. We're no longer a one man team, a team over reliant on Gareth Barry. Dont want to lose him, but if it happens, it happens.
