A Selection Headache Finally

Martin O'Neill is looking forward to the selection headache prior to the Pompey match.

After the Chelsea match many think it's likely that Cuellar and Milner will come in for starts, but the question is - at the expense of who?

Speaking on the official site O'Neill has again insisted that all players will have their fair share of on pitch action this season.

'I thought James and Carlos made good contributions when they came on against Chelsea. I have no doubts about either of them being top players for this club in the coming years.

'I think James will be an absolute class act here at Villa. He's had to sit out a few weeks early on in his career at Villa Park because people have been doing well.

'But James, when he steps into the side, will be quality. And Carlos will definitely make his mark here at Villa Park.

'Players are coming into contention but I don't mind making difficult decisions. There are undoubtedly hard calls.

'But last season we ended up with a relatively settled side, meaning we went into most games with the same players.

'Now we have European games to cater for which means we will have a bit of changing back and forward.

'Certain lads will be coming in and playing a couple of games and then we'll have the usual injuries and suspensions. We need everyone. That's my view.'

If we do aswell as we hope to this season we will definitely need the players and more. We certainly don't want the hassle and problems of official rotation, but mixing the team up every now and then can only be a good thing.

Although IMO Petrov has been our best player so far this season I think MON may bring Milner in for him on Saturday and play NRC central. Stan hasn't really had a rest yet and MON said he wasn't sure when to expect him back from Georgia following his appearance for Bulgaria. A late return for Stan may lead to a start for James. I think Davies will keep his place, but.........

I think Davies looked about as bad as i've seen him against Chelsea - he couldn't seem to get the ball out from under his feet, and IMO that led to at least one of the goals we conceded. I'd give an opportunity to Cuellar and let's have a good look at him - I think he could be superb. Still rate Davies, but he's young - a spell out wouldn't be the end of the world for him.

Gabby may be injured, so Marlon or Milner in for him??

as long as we don't play one up front we'll be ok! I'd go with Milner rather than Marlon I think?
The Fear
We've got very serious options now, something we've longed for for quite a few seasons. Handled correctly, a rotation system could well prove to be the difference between success and failure.

Pity we havent got one or two more proven strikers at the club. Gabby and Big JC, as well as they've been playing, really need some competition.
