DAY 5 - WEDNESDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2008
THE FINAL LEG - AMIENS TO PARIS
YIPPEE - I finally reached Paris at 16.15 this afternoon after setting off from Amiens at 06.45am, after saying goodbye to my delightful hotel...........
With a further 86 miles to travel, conditions were much better than yesterday, a lot brighter and thankfully hardly any wind at all.
The first 20 miles or so were again very hilly, but after that the journey was quite pleasant, particularly when I saw the first signpost of the week saying 'Paris 101 kilometres - what a relief this was and a massive encouraging boost.
I don't recommend anyone else doing this, if, like me, they cannot speak a word of French. Ordering food is particularly difficult - oysters, steak (supposedly medium cooked but actually almost still raw), and today’s lunch which we took after we had covered 40 miles comprised of sausage and chips, not exactly what Lance Armstrong would eat on the last day of the Tour De France I'm sure.
And then this evening after finishing and having a well earned rest for a couple of hours, my stepfather Keith and I decided to go for a well earned beer. In broken English the waiter asked/gestured if we wanted small/medium/large, to which we obviously replied large please. Imagine our astonishment when we saw the size of the glass - huge - and the price for 2 beers.............26 euros!
Nevertheless, the whole adventure has been an experience that I will never forget and I would like to say thanks to everyone who has text and emailed me with encouragement, particularly my family and Neil Rioch, Karl Court and of course Paul Birch himself. I must also say a massive thank you to Keith who has been a rock as my support throughout the journey.
I hope that loads of you have given generously for a true Villa hero, one who’s name is still regularly sung at Villa Park - Paul Birch.
If you have not yet donated but would still like to, all donations, no matter what the sum, will be gratefully received. To make your donation, please make cheques payable to - PAUL BIRCH TRUST - and send to:
