The 40 Teams Including Villa Left In The UEFA Cup

The remaining 40 clubs in the draw which takes place on Tuesday at 12noon for the group stages of the UEFA Cup

There will be 8 groups of 5 teams with the top 3 in each group going to the next stage which will then include the 3rd place 'losers' from the Champions League - which lets face it is disgraceful thing for UEFA to have agreed to! You fail in one cup you go into another cup?!? So you get 24 clubs go through from the UEFA group stages and 8 who fall from the Champions League.

This then becomes a knock out two-leg competition leading to the final.

Clubs remaining in the competition:

Hertha BSC Berlin
Schalke
Olympiacos
CSKA Moskva
København
Aston Villa FC
VfB Stuttgart
AS Saint-Etienne
Spartak Moskva
VfL Wolfsburg
Hamburg
Feyenoord
Manchester City
Nancy
Deportivo
Portsmouth
Slavia
Lech Poznań
MŠK Žilina
FC Metalist Kharkiv
Partizan
NEC Nijmegen
Galatasaray AŞ
Club Brugge
PSG
Racing Santander
UC Sampdoria
Rosenborg
Milan
Dinamo Zagreb
Sevilla
Udinese
FC Twente
Ajax
Benfica 3
R. Standard de Liège
Tottenham
Braga
Heerenveen
Valencia

The 40 survivors enter a group phase, with the clubs being drawn into eight groups of five.

Unlike the Champions League group phase, the UEFA Cup group phase is played in a single round-robin format, with each club playing two home and two away games.

The top three teams in each of the eight groups advance, 24 in total, where they are joined by the eight third-place teams in the Champions League group phase.

After the group stage, there is a winter break. After that, knockout play resumes, with two-leg ties leading to the one-off final.

The 2009 UEFA Cup showpiece will be played at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, home ground of Fenerbahce, in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 20, 2009.

Zenit St. Petersburg are the current holders, having beaten Rangers in the 2008 final.

Some good clubs still in there, could be some great nights at Villa Park in the next few months!
The Fear
Apart from FC Metalist Kharkiv, I fear no-one.

Bring on AC Milan!

I'm with you on that Lee, would love them in our group!

Was in my favourite seat last night in the Holte Upper:) I feel a bit guilty for starting the "Shoes off if you love Villa" chant, because the lad in front of me lost his shoe. Ha ha. Yes, bring on AC Milan, Valencia, Sevilla and Hamburg for our group, nice and easy. Does anyone know if we're still seeded from playing Spurs and Man City???
Villan-in-Cyprus
Bet we get Galatasaray AŞ away! Anyone fancy traveling to "hell and back" ?
villa_de
Well a good 8 teams are in 3 hour traveling distance to my flat! One NEC Nijmegen is only 20 mins away! Hope we get them away, that will bring back memories of MON's very first match, all be it a pre-season friendly. Still got the clipping from Midlands today. Gabby getting our goal! We lost then 2-1, can't see that happening again, just shows how far we have come with MON!

Villan-in-Cyprus: There is country protection but Villa are not seeded as seeding is dependent on the European record over the last 5 seasons. At a guess I'd say the seeded sides are AC, Valencia, Sevilla, Benfica, Ajax, CSKA, Spurs and Udinese but that could be miles off. But what ever the case there should be 2 tricky matches and 2 'easy' matches making a top 3 finish relatively straight forward.....

Just re-read the list, didnt spot MŠK Žilina, they also strike fear into my heart. Some big teams in there, the likes of Lech Poznań and København will no doubt be favourites at this stage, but if we can avoid them then we may make it through to the next round.

I just read down that list and thought "crikey" or something similar, there are some good teams left in this competition! Then I became a bit despondent because I had doubts that we could progress any further. Then I took a reality check and.... hang on a bit! We're good enough to be in with this illustrious group of teams and as long as we don't do anything stupid, should get through to at least the last 32! All good experience for when we qualify for next years Champions League!!

Godzilla - If we worry about this list, what right do we have to in the Champions League? It maybe that years of non-competition have caused to lose some belief. (Would still like an out and out top grade striker though.)

Some very good teams in amongst that little lot, plus I would imagine, a few up and coming teams who might just prove to be surprise packages. We'll certainly be tested, no matter what group we end up in, alongside whatever teams, but thats what we both want and need. Its the only way to well and truly get this club back onto the european stage.

Depends what you class as easy matches Phartman87? Dont think we'll come across too many QPR's(!!!) amongst that little list.
