Crucial We Keep Young

Curtis Davies has said it is crucial that we tie Ashley Young to a longer contract, and he believes he is better than Ronaldo on his current form.

Young is in the middle of negotiations over an improved and longer term deal with Martin O'Neill at the moment and after his performance and freekick at the weekend he certainly hasn't done himself any harm on that score.

Speaking to the Evening Mail, Davies said:

"It is crucial he signs. We have managed to get a core of good English players together and if we can get Ashley to sign on for another few years that will be a massive positive, not just to the club but also the lads to know he is going to be sticking around and hopefully driving us on even more.

"Would I swap him for any other winger? Not at the moment. You could talk about Ronaldo but the way Ash plays - right or left - I don`t think anyone can cope with it when he whips balls in.

"He is one of the best players I have played with. We have got some good players here but he is our most important because he is the one who is going to make something happen.

"If we did not have Ash, we would be a different team. He means that much to us and we are doing that well, so I am sure he is good enough for England.

"He is only light but when he gets on the ball he never looks like he is going to get pushed off it."

Davies has his own international aims when it comes to Fabio Capello, as do many of our English players, but he's adamant Ash deserves a chance and should be a regular in the full squad.

"Hopefully the England manager will come to watch him a bit more and he can get back in that squad.

"He has been unlucky. He was in the first few squads and all I can say is that he is a top quality player."

It would certainly be good for Ash to get that boost of confidence, but being purely selfish I care what they do for Villa.

After seeing constant disappointments with England over the years, and apart from the Croatia result, I see very little difference under God revered Capello, I just really couldn't care.

You have a real gem in Ashley Young and I doubt he will be one of those players looking for instant glory with big clubs. I won't be surprised if he spends his entire career at Villa.

I'm another Ashley Young supporter. How Bentley has been getting in the England squad ahead of him recently is beyond me. I'm fairly confident that won't be the case next time round though.

I can see him moving on in the next couple of years whether he signs a contract or not. This lad is gonna be massive. I'd love him to stay at Villa and achieve everything, just can't see it I'm afraid. Would love to be proven wrong. I think our biggest hope will be O'Neill. The way he dealt with Liverpool in the summer will send out a lot of signals to the "bigger" clubs that we are no longer pushovers in the transfer market. I mean, can anyone remember the last time we stood so firm over one of our players???

I don`t know him but he seems to be the type that would not just jump ship,That being said if man utd came in for him i culdn`t really blame him for going.I think martin o`neill is the key to him staying as much as he was the key to him coming here in the first place.

Davies is future captain... and Young will be one of the best players ever to play for villa, if he keeps improving, like he has been since joining us..

I don't know how anyone can say they think Ashley young is not the sort of person to jump ship? I think he's clearly someone that loves the attention that comes with being a professional footballer, and why wouldn't he want to jump ship and join one of the more 'high profile' clubs playing in the Champions League (if not with us). After all, he didn't show much loyalty to Watford when Villa came knocking, right? The only way we're ever going to keep any of our true top quality players is if we can match their ambitions at Villa Park.....don't think we can ever expect 'loyalty' to come into the equation....

Arsenal are stuffed because they won't pay the wages but Wenger still gets the likes of Fabregas to stay. Watford turned Young down for a contract because he wasn't big enough, which made him have to work much harder, maybe this did him a favour in the long run but he won't appreciate them calling him a shortarse at the time.

We need to get him signed up onto a long term deal, if only to protect ourselves should any of our competitors come a'calling, attempting to turn Ash's head. Get him signed up Mart.

How he's not in the England squad right now I'll never know. Surely Capello cant leave him out of the squad to face Germany?
