'If It's Football, It's Vital'

An Interview With A Baggies Fan

1) So, how do you see this season going for you, surely after a few boings up and down, this time you have enough to stay in the Premiership?

There has been a lot made of our supposed lack of firepower - but we have creativity and drive to spare across the middle, and a fantastic manager too, so provided we don't get robbed by too many cruel injuries or unjust reffing decisions there are definately three worse teams than us - so Yes, we have enough to stay up!

2) Blues, Villa or Wolves. Who do you dislike the most and why!?!??!?!

Wolverhampton Wanderers. In my life this has been the 'biggest derby', I fondly remember the atmosphere & elation of a 1-1 draw at home after coming from behind, not to mention the season we overhauled a seemingly impossilbe deficit to gain promotion at their expense a few seasons back. With the Villa, we've not been competing on the same level for so much of the last 20 years, and the Blues always champion the Villains as their main rivals - I don't really care much for the blue-noses either way unless we're playing them!

3) Villa v Baggies was always the traditional local derby, who do you now see as your main rivals?

As I've said, the competition with Wolves is fierce, but a special mention must be reserved for Stoke - a team I hate possibly more than any of our more local rivals! An absolutely appaling record (27 years and counting without a win against them) coupled with their 'contasting' 'style' of football, and also Promotion, meaning we're essentially lumped together by the popular media as two of the 'promoted sides set to struggle'. I also have very little time for Pulis, and especially Mama Sidibe (after recent events you may be able to empathise with me!)

4) Best signing for the Baggies this summer and worst exit?

Scott Carson best signing. A lot has been made of Zuiverloon & Valero - who both look class, especially the former. But Keily looked shaky last season, and a quality keeper - which Carson is - is essential to build confidence from the back. Worst exit has to be Kevin Phillips, although there's a question mark over how he would have done and it's a shame he didn't back himself to do the business and earn his second year - he loved it and was loved here, but that's football.

5) What do you think about Villa and also Martin O'Neill?

I love the English contingent that MON is assembling at Villa Park - even if Curtis Davies is one of the players at the heart! Gabby, Ashley, Reo-Coker, Barry & Milner, supplemented by Carew, who is a top striker, makes me think you are prehaps the most likely (and untouted) team to run the top-four close. MON himself is a manager I've always rated, and think the tactical acumen and way he develops youth (the latter in a very similar way to Mowbray) is already reaping dividends for you after an indifferent first season. The backing of Lerner, with cash & not interference, is a great blueprint many clubs could do with following and is a solid foundation for future success for the you claret & blue.

6) If you could have one of your players, who would it be and why?

I think Barry is your best player, but I'd take Carew to B71 as he's a great, experienced striker - something we lack, and a great pro to bring on our raw young striking talent. After all, we've already got Carson and errr.... Luke Moore

7) Who do you think will win the Prem and where do you think you'll finish?

Man Utd to win, Baggies 14th

8) Ok, the big question, who will win on Sunday? Prediction please sir?!?!

The 23 year wait is over. West Brom 2-1 Aston Villa.

A bit more class than that tw@ from Spurs. Peronally I'm expecting quite a few goals as both teams seem to play the right way. Most reasonable Baggies fans I know and I work with a few, expect us to win. 3-2 to the Villa
Dead Souls
Good interview Alex good luck in all your games this season (except 2).

Best signing Carson?????????????????????????????
Villan444
Good luck Baggies, but can't see anything other than a 3-1 Villa win...unless we're completely knackered from the bulgarian trip...
olafthegreat
All the baggies i know have put money on Moore to score the winner. I have a nasty feeling, not scored for them yet!!!!!

Random question: does anyone know if it's possible to watch channel 5 live on your computer?!

my mom's a baggies fan, so i have a soft spot for them. i hope you stay up and help us relegate the blues again next year!
bobbyfett
oh dear scott carson best signing, it's all hype with him, i'm sure of it
krisvilla
Baggies have played some good stuff so far, i see this being a tough game.

I'm not under-estimating the Baggies, but I do think that their style plays into our hands. We find it more difficult against teams like Stoke that sit back and spoil our play. West Brom are a team that I enjoy watching, they play nice football, but I do think this will suit us and we will be able to play like we did against Spurs. I worry more about playing the likes of Hull, Wigan and Sunderland at home than I would about West Brom away.
GCR_villlan
as long as a dam busters style throw in is not used, villa should win, i agree with GCR, should suit villa's style of play
krisvilla
CARSON BEST SIGNING? AHAHHAAHHHHAHAHHAHA. whatever u say there mate ;D
Gruck
Scott Carson played 35 of your Premier League matches last season. You finished 6th. He's got a champions league winners medal. He's 23 and has 2 England caps. Yes, he had several 'mares last season, but the lad is a good keeper - certainly at our 'level'. Should be a good match, and I agree with the majority of posters who suspect our style may play into your hands. If Zuiverloon isn't fit I worry about the pace on your wings ripping Hoefkens into tiny little pieces. We'll be trickier at the 'thorns than Hull at VP though. Definately.
Alex Humpage
Scott Carson is currently in the top 5 opta's best keepers this season. Doesn't surprise me in the least. He is a good keeper in the making despite how crap he was for us.

Like all Derby games, tight uncompromising and a thriller won of course by the Villa, yea I will echo the semtiments of my fellow Vital Oppos. Good Luck for the season @---;-- stick this flower behind your ear as its all your getting from Villa this week :-p
col8
For those of us who were around in the 60's/70's/and early to mid 80's, this fixture is arguably right up there with the Brummagem derby, nothing, or indeed very little, to choose between them. Mainly of course because during those three decades the Albion were more or less on a pretty level playing field with us, as opposed to that little shower from Small Heath. Lot of fiesty games took place during that period, and feelings between the camps were running very high indeed, both amongst the players and the supporters. Bring it on. Let rivalries recommence.
glensider
I tend to agree with Col8 as to Sundays game. It will be tight I would imagine, probably a goal either way deciding it, with the draw also looking a distictly possible outcome. I'll speak with the heart though as opposed to the head, and go for a 2-1 claret and blue victory. How confident am I? Not overly.
glensider
Wouldnt underestimate Hull.
young_jonah
I like WBA, they are a good honest bunch of lads, whoops sorry i thought i was DOL for a minute there. ;-)
