Warning! Litex Lovech Will Be No Walkover

What do we actually know about this side? Not alot.

Litex Lovech won the Bulgarian equivalent of the FA Cup back in May and are one of the countries strongest sides.

Looking at the forums and speaking to work colleagues it soon became obvious that most if not all Villa fans are expecting a big win, scores ranging from 3-0 to 6-0, in fact. I am starting to wonder if I may be the only fan who always feels a little worried going into these matches.

Who could forget the shock first round exit to NK Varteks in 2001. We had just won the Intertoto Cup, sound familiar? And before people claim our team is better now, lets not forget that our team at back then consisted of many top players including Juan Pablo Angel, Olof Mellberg and George Boateng.

Although we are on good form at the moment and Martin O'Neill is a top manager, this is a game that should not be taken lightly. We need to show Lovech some respect and take this game seriously.

Curtis Davies spoke to the Official Website - 'I am really looking forward to the game and I suppose you could class it as the start of the competition because it's the first round proper. It's an interesting one because, Litex are something of an unknown quantity. We don't know the team like we would Manchester United or Barcelona. People may say that playing a smaller team would be better than playing a world-class side but sometimes it's worse'.

I know fans will always be expectant going into these types of games, but as long as the players prepare for it like they would any Premiership Club then we should be alright.

Good Luck to the lads, a draw would be a good result to take into the Home leg, but a win would still be nice.

I am a little nervous.
young_jonah
They were last 16 in 05/06. Could be dodge.
DVall
I wasn't nervous until I read this story. Cheers for that. I've got enough on my plate at the moment with the credit crunch, global warming, and my car's upcoming MOT. Great, just great!
astonguerilla
Yeah cant be too confident about it - certainly no place for Osbourne, Salifou, Guzan etc. in starting XI but I am sure they will not play. I know about our backlog of games but we need to be sensible. I would go with the likes of Milner, Cuellar and Gardner. How about this - Friedel, L. Young, Shorey, Davies, Cuellar, Milner, A. Young, Gardner, Petrov, Agbonlahor, Harewood. If we are comfy enough at half-time with a 2 goal cushion bring off Gabby, Petrov and A. Young for The Fonz, Salifou and Routledge. Then we go into another big game on Sunday hopefully injury-free with Carew!!
deano.avfc
Too true Deano, the second leg is the time for resting players when we have got a comfortable lead from the first leg.
young_jonah
It'll be one up front and 5 man midfield I reckon.
Gordonsleftboot
I would say that's probably right Gordons...although O'Neill seems pretty focused on the 4-4-2 this season so far!
Villa4Europe
Yeah, we know very little about this club. If it was a so called "big name", then we'd know more - or at least we'd think we knew more - and would probably have a better handle on what needed to happen to get through. It wasn't enormously comfortable against our plucky Viking chums in the Intertoto, was it?
BBJ
MON is replacing Carew up front. He's there mainly to keep gabby motivated.
johnnyuk
Ashley Young is doubtful according to the official site
astonguerilla
Looked up Litex Lovech on Wik, seems they have a bunch of Frenchmen and a smattering of Brazilians, none of which I have heard of. Maybe a bit of Latin flair though
dannyvellow
Great name for a team though
Red Wimp
Also a good name for a condom company.......no offence intended to our Bulgarian friends

A.Youngs got a knee injury so i dont think he's gonna start. Big blow. I rekon Barry on left, milner right, hokey and petrov in the mid. Give the Hare another chance to prove himself.

The same year we lost to Varteks in round 1, they lost 4-3 on agg to AEK Athens in round 3 (last 32). It's all on UEFA.com. Caution advised.
Madirish
Im always worried from past experience that Villa dont take these sort of games seriously enough, Helsingborg, Varteks, Doncaster, Leicester etc. Im sure MON knows how to prepare the lads for the game, they are a good honest bunch after all.
DO'L
just had a look here http://www.soccerboards.com/tables_detail.php?l=18 They aint lost yet this season.....
DO'L
MON will have done his homework, the mans no ones fool, lets hope it stops raining so we can get the tie out of the way and not end up having to travel over there again. Litex Lovech's Lucky Numbers 2
col8
I hope Youngs injury is not serious.
Pking
I agree with Col8. MON takes the UEFA cup very seriously, that is why he got Celtic to the final! And within hours of the draw, he was talking about finding everything out about them. I think Petrov could be key here, as he may have insider information! Any kind of a win would be fantastic, but a draw, especially a score draw would be good too!
villa_de
They certainly wont be pushovers, far from it. Partisan crowd, compact stadium, poor conditions, we'd better be up for this one right from the off.
glensider
Hopefully though we can get the type of result that will see us installed as firm favourites to progress. Even with some key performers missing, we've surely got enough in our locker to return to Villa Park at least all square?
