Martin O'Neill On 'Terrific' Villa

Video highlights of the game: Click Here

Martin O'Neill used his favourite word about the 2-1 victory over Spurs 'terrific!'

He said on AVTV following the Monday night match:

'We were really brilliant in the first half and more than merited our lead. Then Ashley hammered in a shot to give us a two goal cushion. We got a bit tired towards the end and put men behind the ball. Tottenham started to throw it into the box and did cause us a few problems. They scored and it was a worrying few minutes but we saw it through - unlike last year.'

With memories still fresh of being 4-1 up only to draw 4-4 last season, MON admitted the nerves got to them at the end when Spurs scored.
'The nerves were jangling at the end. You do get concerned, very concerned because Tottenham had nothing to lose. Bent scored and then they were back in it and thoughts of last year started to surface. But we saw it through and deserved to do so.'

He also singled Gareth Barry out for some special praise saying the former captain was 'immense' adding, 'But then again everyone was terrific. It was a real team display but along with that we had so many flourishing individual performances too. Ashley was a danger every time he picked the ball up, Gabby did great and Nigel and Stiliyan were fantastic in midfield too.

The victory will certainly keep the confidence high with the team, apart from the Stoke result, this has been a great start to the season and with options in both defence and midfield, we are far far stronger than this time last season.

For me Its really starting to come together now,We have a belief about us home or away that we are there to win and it is ours for the taking,Just like the man utds and chelseas of this world have about them.Forget top 4 i am predicting we will finish 3rd this season,Mark my words.

My god i would take 4th but 3rd that's bold. Looked great last night shame we couldnt keep a clean sheet but then again we should have won by 5 clear goals GG

I can see it tubbz,Especially away from home,It kicked in during the second half of last season,We have the same approach and confidence about us as the top 4 teams,ie we play like we are at home even whe we are away. You know as well as i do what we have looked like at white hart lane in the last decade,Mostly *****e,Ifyou didn`t know anything about football last night you would have thought we were the home side. And don`t be fooled spurs are a top 8 side and we bossed them.Fergie has seen it and so have i.

Nobody has said we are the best,I am saying we will finish 3rd and you don`t have to beat man utd to do that,We have played liverpool and they got naff all.So you come back and see us at the end of the season big boy and we will see where we are.

3rd place after our first win in the capital in goodness knows how many years? Not just bold, i'd say it's way over optimistic. Statements like that can be made in the final 8 weeks of the season if we're sat not far off... At the moment we have a LONG ways to go. I'm optimistic for the future but still weary on our strike options until christmas.

progress progress progress. all the time with oneill, i was amazed at the composure and skill both luke young and shorey showed last night. and to think oneill only had them for two weeks on the training ground since the liverpool game. i just hope we get the striker we need at christmas. Even if it is Heskey, he would do a big big job for us, and I think he has more about his game than harewood.

3rd. Sorry lerneravfc, I just cant see it mate. Would absolutley love it if we did but in all honesty we havent got the squad just yet. With Carew out for the next game we are lacking options up front an injury to either of our fullbacks and we are replacing them with midfielders again. I think we will be just behind 5th or 6th with a decent cup run (perhaps win the UEFA) and I will be more than happy, we will then really push on the following year. Still I would give my arm for Blackburn Rovers league win!

That will be sorted in the jan window mate,We can do it.I also wouldn`t bet against us winning the uefa cup as well,This is nothing new from me though, I am always blindly optimistic when it comes to villa under o`neill,He is top draw imo.

if you finished third then who are you going to replace?? anyone of the top four are capable of winning the league...they are the best,to break into the top four means you are one of the best teams...i never mentioned anything about winning the league...your team can be the best of the rest, but you wont break into the top four mark my words, your squad has no depth, and believe me if you want to join the party then you have to be able to compete at a consistant level.

You know nothing if you think our squad has no depth.Liverpool or arsenals places are not set in stone, far from it they are up for grabs in my opinion. My optimism is based on last season and how much stronger we are looking this season. When we bring in ashton in jan my predictions will soon become reality.

well even your own fans think that your squad doesnt have enough backup quality...and you definately know nothing if you think that Arsenal will give up their champions league position to AV, or Man city or anybody...i like your optimism but thats all it is...

I did have a little chuckle at the comment, "any one of the top four are capable of winning the league" I take it you're a Liverpool fan then, as, imo, they are the only one of the top four that are NOT capable of winning the league.

Liverpool are the only ones out of the top 4 to have never won the Prem and their start to the season has been very very very lucky indeed. Even against Manure, they were lucky. Its just the Media love them so much that they were said to be excellent. We should still be aiming for them. With the amount of chances that we create every week all I want for christmas is a finisher.

We defo need more back up, RB and CF inparticular but its plain to see we still have a quality squad thats going places. Maybe top 4 as this early stage is a bit optimistic but theres no reason why we cant push for it. We're playin the best football we've played for years and liverpool dont look much these days.

would like to say i thought curtis was fantastic last nite.great solid game. and petrovs starting to find his feet in the prem and bossing games from the centre of the park. in the transfer window i was hoping we'd sign "stars" similar to what spurs did. but im glad we didnt as those pampered "stars" dont seem to give a toss about winning. whereas our british lads do us proud every week tryin there hearts out.january transfer window i would love to see Ashton at VP but NO foreign big timers!!

We were awsome last night,i know its against a team who clearly dont even know each others name let alone how to play together but even at the top of ther game they would struggle against our tight unit.We do need another striker as the game changed a bit when Carew went off but Davis,Laurson,Petrov, shorey, young and reo coker were all top notch, keep up the good work lads...UP THE VILLA

lerneravfc, i'm sticking my neck out too, as I have the same feeling as you about us getting third. If Fergy is optomistic about our chances, then so am I. Besides, I reckon he knows a thing or two! Last night's performances reminded me of England's against Croatia. Very well organised, played as a unit and we're a constant threat going forward.

it could all hinge on january, but yeah i agree - we are starting to mix it with the arsenals and liverpools. 5th would still make me happy but 4th or 3rd is possible if we get that bit of luck

heres a little fact...if liverpool had beaten man-utd home and away last year they would have been champions....which is something they havent done for donkey years, but the game on saturday was a step in the right direction...i dont think liverpool will win the league i just think they are capable....btw my allegiance is given away by my user name.

I won't get ahead of myself as I think consistency is our weakest point, but if every game is like last night's, 3rd is a realistic possibility. I thought we were breathtaking.

A late goal conceded again. This time it didn't particularly matter, didn't change the result or the destination of the points, but its getting really old now, and will cost us in the long run.

Lets not get overly carried away chaps. Stoke didn't mean we would end up getting relegated, Tottenham doesn't mean we're going to finish top four. We need to perform a little balancing act here with our emotions and expectations. Things are looking promising, but lets not get too carried away.
