Martin O'Neill On 'Terrific' Villa

Martin O'Neill On 'Terrific' Villa

Martin O'Neill used his favourite word about the 2-1 victory over Spurs 'terrific!'

He said on AVTV following the Monday night match:

'We were really brilliant in the first half and more than merited our lead. Then Ashley hammered in a shot to give us a two goal cushion. We got a bit tired towards the end and put men behind the ball. Tottenham started to throw it into the box and did cause us a few problems. They scored and it was a worrying few minutes but we saw it through - unlike last year.'

With memories still fresh of being 4-1 up only to draw 4-4 last season, MON admitted the nerves got to them at the end when Spurs scored.
'The nerves were jangling at the end. You do get concerned, very concerned because Tottenham had nothing to lose. Bent scored and then they were back in it and thoughts of last year started to surface. But we saw it through and deserved to do so.'

He also singled Gareth Barry out for some special praise saying the former captain was 'immense' adding, 'But then again everyone was terrific. It was a real team display but along with that we had so many flourishing individual performances too. Ashley was a danger every time he picked the ball up, Gabby did great and Nigel and Stiliyan were fantastic in midfield too.

The victory will certainly keep the confidence high with the team, apart from the Stoke result, this has been a great start to the season and with options in both defence and midfield, we are far far stronger than this time last season.

For me Its really starting to come together now,We have a belief about us home or away that we are there to win and it is ours for the taking,Just like the man utds and chelseas of this world have about them.Forget top 4 i am predicting we will finish 3rd this season,Mark my words.

I can see it tubbz,Especially away from home,It kicked in during the second half of last season,We have the same approach and confidence about us as the top 4 teams,ie we play like we are at home even whe we are away. You know as well as i do what we have looked like at white hart lane in the last decade,Mostly *****e,Ifyou didn`t know anything about football last night you would have thought we were the home side. And don`t be fooled spurs are a top 8 side and we bossed them.Fergie has seen it and so have i.

3rd place after our first win in the capital in goodness knows how many years? Not just bold, i'd say it's way over optimistic. Statements like that can be made in the final 8 weeks of the season if we're sat not far off... At the moment we have a LONG ways to go. I'm optimistic for the future but still weary on our strike options until christmas.

progress progress progress. all the time with oneill, i was amazed at the composure and skill both luke young and shorey showed last night. and to think oneill only had them for two weeks on the training ground since the liverpool game. i just hope we get the striker we need at christmas. Even if it is Heskey, he would do a big big job for us, and I think he has more about his game than harewood.

3rd. Sorry lerneravfc, I just cant see it mate. Would absolutley love it if we did but in all honesty we havent got the squad just yet. With Carew out for the next game we are lacking options up front an injury to either of our fullbacks and we are replacing them with midfielders again. I think we will be just behind 5th or 6th with a decent cup run (perhaps win the UEFA) and I will be more than happy, we will then really push on the following year. Still I would give my arm for Blackburn Rovers league win!
