good start to this thread - milner signing!!! now, priority? RB, striker or other?
NorthcliffeBandit
striker striker striker striker striker
Mancuni-villa
I would like to suggest a poll/petition to keep Villa 5 - 1 Blouse a permenant fixture on the latest results table. Mr Fear is this possible?
NorthcliffeBandit
no don't think so Northcliffe, mainly because that would suggest they matter to the mighty Villa! :o)
The Fear
(oh, good idea by the way northcliff! Not got time to code that though, it would affect all the following results!)

If we could get a striker in, that would be the icing on the cake, but can't see any team letting such a rare commodity as a top striker go at this stage of the summer.
The Fear
Saha once Berba goes to united?
son_of_cher
Bit late Son_of_cher - he's going to Everton!
Gazvilla
A net spend of arond £40million, does that make us the biggest spenders over the summer?
keithlees1978
I would like to see Martins brought in from Newcastle for a new striker. Though it will be very very hard to prise him away.
villa for ever
Looks like James Milner is our new Record Signing. Definitely worth the money in my opinion, as he will turn out just like Ashley Young has, and Milner's value is only going to increase, especially if he makes it into the England squad.
villa for ever
Have to get a striker in now. Harewood just hasnt got the quality we need to progress as a squad. Id go for benni mc, gudjohnson or maybe forlan or kanoute. If gabby or big john get crocked we're done for
medzy
medzy: If gabby gets "crocked" we can play 4-3-3 With Barry-Reo-Sidwell midfield and Young-Carew-Minler upfront. In this formation Young and Milner would score loads of goals with sidwell chipping in too.
AVFC_WSM
Swap Harewood + £?M for Heskey. This would be a good squad improvement. Alternatively go for Eidur Gudjohnsen - his experience would bring loads to villa. I'd give Gudjohnsen (30y) a 4year deal and pay £10M for him. We may have to wait until Jan09 for Gudjohnsen, he'll be *****ed-off sitting on Barcelona's bench by then!
AVFC_WSM
I remember some said i had "swallowed the pr" and had "blind faith"in o`neill when i told them to stop flapping and told them they would get the players in,I hope those "supporters"are extremely embarrased if not a little ashamed,Next transfer window try trusting and supporting your board and manager instead of accusing them of being liers,All because you yourself have no patience.
lerneravfc
why lerneravfc? its human nature. i fully accept that some villa supporters are muppets. its just that there are more misguided muppets supporting other clubs. impatience is something even the best of us - and me - suffer from. i was frustrated, but always believed MON pull pull through. he did, and now i believe this is the best villa team since i realised football existed
ric112
Surely anyone following a different team must be somewhat misguided Ric !! Also whilst talking of keeping the faith surely one crap performance by harewood doesnt warrant talk of kicking him out! Especially for bloody Heskey!!
NorthcliffeBandit
Heskey got 3 goals in 26 matches last season, the hare managed 6 largely from the bench
NorthcliffeBandit
Can all talk of Eidur Gudjohnson be halted. The guy has specifically stated through his agent that he would NOT come to Villa, due to our location. He's stated this and it seems pretty blatant therefore that he wouldn't come here.
AstonMartinOneill
so who will be the next signing for Villa realistically or do we think we are done flashing the cash?
Villa-in-my-Blood
Get Torres on loan until we have played the doleites twice! Unsettle their team. _______________________________________________________________ For me I think a good top drawer RB and a sniffer up front to bag the supply from our tricky wingers.
holte ender 1969
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is poised to make an audacious move for West Ham's England striker Dean Ashton after missing out on Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz. (Daily Mirror)
Saurat
I would love Ashton - I reckon that of all the strikers we have been linked with he fits the 'O'Neill-type' better than anyone. He is a great old-fashioned Number 9 and would do so well with pacy wingers either side. He is also technically great in a supporting role. An ideal striker for the Villa and also - young, english, with a point to prove!!! Perfect!!! Also linked with Peguy Luyindula from PSG. Anythoughts on him?? I dont know much about him??
deano.avfc
Now Man City have bought Zabalete - should we hijack Spurs' move for Corluka???? I would have thought we would have been after a sub/squad right back like Naylor - what do you think? I would love Corluka v Young and Shorey v Bouma for the full-back spots with Davies v Cuellar for the Laursen partner. What a defence!!!
deano.avfc
Dean Ashton at 24/25 would be an excellent signing. He has a good goal record too. 1 in 3.... Imagine what could happen with the supply from Young and Milner.. On a side note would the presence of Young and Milner help attract a top striker. I think so!
AVFC_WSM
Critics have suggested that Villa’s stance is hypocritical in the light of their pursuit of new £12million signing James Milner. But Benitez said: “I have my own opinion on that but I prefer not to say anything." ...erm, did we lodge a bid WAY lower than his value? no. but did we actually have the money to see the transfer through? YES. Benitez is a child.
ric112
Also did Barry hand in a transfer request?
Adam Deuce
I know it would never happen, but if the toon are financially in trouble I would bid for Owen, he has only one year left on his contract. He would definately make our team contenders.
johnmurphy3112
Yes ric112. As soon as the fat Spaniard opens his mouth you just know that he is speaking out of his arse. Keegan was on Sky saying how Villa have been totally professional in the whole matter and everyone is happy. They have their money, we have our player back and Milner has his dream move. MON must have known about the transfer request for a week before it went public and didn't go running his mouth off to the press unlike some managers (who are only any good in cups.) Maybe there is some jealousy that he doesn't have any money or a new stadium from todays press. LOL @The Giro bandits
Villan444
So Barry is staying?
tomo27tigers
No chance of getting Ashton. He's starting today, which surely shows the deal won't gt through. We may have left this one too late, or we actually weren't interested in the first place. If the deal did go through, West Spam would have no time at all to find a replacement.
In MON we trust!
Ashton would be good but perhaps Fred (Lyon) or Huntelaar (Ajax) would be better? Quagliarella (Udinese), Pazzini (Fiorentina) or Diego Milito (Zaragoza) would also be serve.
NorthcliffeBandit
James Milner is a real bargain at £12million. Hes hard working with good crossing ability. Happy so far with MONs signings but at least 2 more please MON. Striker and RB.
bellywipes
By the way how the hell did villa reserves (Middlesbro) get Justin Hoyte before us..........missed out there MON!
bellywipes
We defo need quality though. Im not having a go at harewood but with such a busy season we're gonna need to rest gabby/carew and harewood just cant fill their boots. No consistency. He's a squad player if im brutally honest. I rekon 4 4 2 is always going to be our strongest formation. Quality striker please MON
medzy
I would love to see an available Henrik Larsson even if it was for one season to help us in Europe especially!
bellywipes
McCarthy not in the Blackburn squad once again and no reports of injury...interesting!!
In MON we trust!
Kevin doyle got a hat-trick!! Still not worth 7.5 though
medzy
Benni would be a good signing. He knows where the goal is. Come on MON, lets av him
medzy
want better then doyle and mccarthy.... sign up nasri did you see what he did to the thug barton... absolutely lovely... that alone is worth 10mil.. wipe that silly smirk off his face
aussie_villan
I agree we need someone to come in and threaten gabby and big johns places, doyle, benni and ashton wont do that. Mind you I don't know who is available that is good enough.
johnmurphy3112
Benni has got to be on his way, got to be. He has so much experience and is a very good striker and more than capable of bolstering our squad as he is miles better than Marlene in my opinion. Where's D'OL to call him an honest, hardworking bunch of lads....makes me laugh every time.
koolbill
p.s. We'd have been in with a real shout for Bent had it not been for Berba and Keane hot footing it to the top two - with the former surely on his way....we don't have a chance now. Was my number one target with RSC and Ashton following closely and Benni as my absolute backup should it go t1ts up.
koolbill
This seasons squad picture is on the official site, does this mean we have made all our signings?
chris the villan
Beckford from Leeds United, one for the future. Certainly knows where the goal is.
glensider
Unlikely to get a first choice striker like Ashton so late in the window. I can see us getting someone on loan, or overpaying for a lower division striker like Doyle.
Surfer Dude
saw that peguy luyindula link and at a glance thought we were going to sign peguy arphexad. ahem.
ric112
Well according to MON there are still deals in the pipeline for at least one more sigining chris the villan.
MattUTV
It's not over til the fat lady sings and she is clearing her throat.
holte ender 1969
If we are leaving it very very late and miss out on the likes of Ashton, Doyle or McCarthy, I still think we need someone in - even if it is on the cheap just as a 4th choice striker. So how about Collins John from Fulham on a free (apparently they will offload him and Smertin for free) - he had a great season not so long ago. But to be honest if we cant get Ashton (undoubted best striker we have been linked with recently) why not do for Nugent - he would meet the O'Neill requirements - young, english with a point to prove - £4m and should be a relatively easy deal to complete???
deano.avfc
deano, take a lie down son. All of the above are ****e and we may as well stay with what we have. Remember MON will only bring in quality or stay as we are. My money's on a right back on loan and McCarthy or Laursen.
In MON we trust!
Do you mean Larsson?? We already have Laursen - he wears 5 and is our captain???
deano.avfc
Well said, In MON we trust! There is no need to panic buy. Thats where the likes of the Djemba twins came from. The Fonz would be better than those mentioned and would like to see him brought on more than Marlon.
Villan444
Dave Nugent is like Steve Sidwell - if we got him 12-18months ago we would be raving about what a top signing he was. His career has stalled recently but he played for England and scores plenty of goals. Certainly I would be happy with him as 3rd/4th choice striker. McCarthy is past his best and would not be good value for money - I would rather have Derbyshire if we are going to Ewood for anyone other than Santa Cruz!!! I think RB is covered as MON sees Gardner and Reo-Coker as suitable alternatives unfortunatley!!! But when all is said and done - ASHTON is the man I want - but if we sign noone else I will be happy enough!! An excellent window and highest spenders with our transfer record equalled with Davies and smashed with Milner. Gotta be happy with that!!!
deano.avfc
Nugent, John, Smertin are craap. Why the fudge would we want those chumps! _______________________________________________________________ Come on you Villa lions lets roar to victory against an average Liverpoo without bumboy Gerro! GB to score the winning goal and raise his shirt to say "Villa til I die". That will firmly shut up the fat spanish waiter. Then GB can ring Gerro and tell him he is fab and come to the Villa! Well, I would welcome the sweet victory but maybe not Gerro. 2-0 to the Villa with goals from Torres 0-1, Carew 1-1 and a late penalty from GB.
holte ender 1969
* sorry 2-1 to Villa. Although not sorry about that. Absolutely delighted infact. UTV.
holte ender 1969
didnt suggest Smertin just thought Collins John would be a good free transfer short term option - granted the Fonz and the Hare are fine backups so maybe not. But I still stand by the fact that Ashton or Nugent would be very good signings and keep Gabby on his toes!!!! I certainly think McCartney is not the answer - he would have been around the time we got Angel and looked at him - now he is being kept out of the side by Jason Roberts!!!
deano.avfc
On another topic - we have obviously completed signings in midfield and defence (bar a sub RB) and O'Neill knows he is going to have Young/Milner and Shorey/Young on each flank. So if everyone is 100% fit who do you think will be our central pairings?? Laursen, Davies, Cuellar, Knight? Barry, Reo-Coker, Sidwell, Gardner, Petrov, Salifou, Osbourne?? I think we will go with Laursen and Cuellar (Davies will start today but I think by the time we play Spurs Cuellar will play) & Barry and Sidwell.
deano.avfc
Report today reckons the first bid for Ashton was refused but Villa will go back with a second to the cash strapped Hammers.
The Fear
Just read that report Fear - how much do you think it will take?? Same report says £16m and I do not think that it is unreasonable given the marketplace today. But that would be the maximum. On another note - has Milner definitley got the Number 8 shirt??? Or is that being reserved for a centre-forward!!!??
deano.avfc
Gonna answer my own question - if you go to order the shirt from avfc site on the scroll down menu for choosing squad numbers with Milner 8 being an option - for anyone else who didnt know - Cuellar is wearing 24 this season.
deano.avfc
Ashton....would love him as stated but think he will stay...there's rumous about Owen going as well....apparently to Man U or Spurs...I think Man U would scoff at that as they have Tevez who is nearly the same player in every way...Spurs aren't going to bid for him as they still want Arshavin...so I'm edging a sneaky bet that MON is in for him! So, would he be welcome at Villa? Could he stay injury free? Certainly a fast paced team like ours would suit him as he wouldn't be doing all the work himself.....any takers?
koolbill
I have wanted Ashton since he was at Crewe - he was a lot cheaper then! Worried about the fitness records of either Owen or Ashton mind especially with Big John's record. Getting Benni would be like having Dwight York back. If we are to choose a non-premiership option an initial loan period would be wisest.
Winsforvilla
Finished 0-0 draw. Happy with a draw today, fully deserved to get something out of the game. I wonder Martin put James Milner on the bench. Strange that a record signing does not start. I was expecting before the game that Ashley Young and James Milner would be playing on the right and left of midfield.
villa for ever
I would definately go for Owen Gabby was non-existant for me today, I know he scored a hatrick last week blah blah blah, but he didn't put a shift in today, Owen would be excellent for us, would love to see him in a villa shirt.
johnmurphy3112
Murphy you hit the nail on the head, I think gabby was crap today, if he come up against a defense that has the slightest positioning then they force him out of the game. He needs to be pushed by someone on the bench of better quality than him. Or we need a Merson type player who can turn the game and do something special, we were very one dimensional today, Ash was totally marked ou of the game. And others will follow suit.
erv2005
Owen would be a great siging the kind of goalscorer we really need
happyvillan
reckon gabby's performance was affected by the stories in the papers revealing that he had managed to get THREE women pregnant at the same time ? what a *****!n d!ck !
villian?umhu
Lets try owen why not. How much would we need to pay for Ashton? Slightly different subject, but what a penis Capello is turning into what is he turning our national team into apart from a joke!!
pksandell
but to be honest lads ,, can u really see owen in a villa shirt ? i would be over the moon but cant really see it guys ! X
villian?umhu
i dont think the result today was all that bad,at the end of the day if you cant win a game u just make sure u dont lose it and to be fare our defence was rock solid today.would also like to point out that for me that was nigel reo cocker's best performance in a villa jersey, that 80 yard burst down the right was full of determination and that is exactly what we need more of from a lot of players eg..gabby agbonlahor, need a new striker for sure but cant see that happening now unless we sign doyle wich i think would be a total waste of 8million quid..if we can turn our possesion into goals we will be sweet
mason007
Reading have said they wanna keep doyle though. Good news for us. I dont think king kev will want to sell us anymore of his better players. West ham need the money surely?? Not sure ashton is worth 18 mil which is how much they would apparently sell for. 12-15 at the most. Nugent has'nt done enough for me. Its gonna be tough to find quality this late
medzy
I'm starting to think our best line up is Friedel, Shorey, laursen, Davies, L Young.......A Young, Barry, Reo Coker, Petrov, Milner.... and Carew up front on his own. And how does Emule Hesdonkey keep getting to the England squad?!!
johnmurphy3112
I wasn't surprised to see Milner on the bench, simply because he only signed yesterday! Needs time to gel with the team. Gabby didn't really get up to much today it must be said...I have faith in the guy to become a good player but he needs a better footballing brain. Fingers crossed we will get in a new striker tomorrow otherwise I feel we are short of firepower.
Villa4Europe
I think Gabby did OK. You must remember LFC have one of the tightest defences in the country. It was 2 sisdes equally matched, cancelling each out. There wasn't a striker on the park that set the game alight. I think to single Gabby out for critisism is unfair.
gappy65
It's not a critisism of one game, don't get me wrong I love Gabby (so do half the girls in brum by the look of it!!) I just don't think he is the finished article yet, so we need a proven first class striker of the same style to mentor him, for me that is Owen.
johnmurphy3112
Get your air guitars out... 'It's the final countdown, la la la laaa, la la la la laaaaa' ! (Finally transfer fever has caught up with me!)
The Fear
Any last minute links today then Fear?
Tez86
tick tock tick tock
Stig
Eircol, predictions for today? It will be dull without you around.
tarzan
apparently we were outbidded for deportivo striker by newcastle ?!
villian?umhu
They will certainly be working their socks off today that is for sure, hopefully the work will bear a little more fruit for us! I offered to drive up to pick Michael Owen up, sadly they didn't want my services!
The Fear
ANYBODY ELSE GOT THE FEELING WE ARN'T GONNA SIGN ANYBODY TODAY ?
villian?umhu
Villa still have one or two things on the go, possibly one of those a loan signing.
Eircol
villian?umhu i agree villa wont sign anyone today becasue they had their photo yesterday
Carlos cuellar 1
Anything a bit more specific Eircol?
Gordonsleftboot
Someone must have some info! Anyone down at the training ground gates player spotting? Are Ashton or Doyle at training? On yesterday's performace it's clear to see we need another attacking option!
In MON we trust!
Dissapointing comments by MON. Looks like it could be it for transfers....“If things don’t materialise - and they are probably more likely not to - we will not be disappointed.
In MON we trust!
zigic on loan perhaps?
Stig
In MON we Trust - where did yuo hear that? The OS is saying MON & RL will be working all day to make things happen if at all possible. "We'll try if at all possible to do some business"
AVGD
I think we'll pay for Doyle to be loaned alá Carson and maybe Naylor for RB. That'll be it tho folkes...shame we couldn't get McCarthy on loan.
koolbill
Yeah judging from MON'c comments it doesnt look too good for anymore, no reason to be disappointed though, weve got an improved squad, with just abit more work needed in some areas...if anything maybe a loan signing or two, but hopefully well all be suprised and wowed with a signign along the lines of ashton. koolbill dont think theyll loan out Doyle, if reading are not gunna have Doyle in their squad it will have been because they have sold him for top dollar, and their valuation is stupid mind you, but they wouldnt loan out their prized asset, ditto for mccarthy especially
AussieVilla
Thanks for the company this summer chaps, been a blast!!
The Fear
Ready for the January window Fear?
Gordonsleftboot
Gordonsleftboot..... NOOOOOOooooooooooooo !!!! Might actually keep a sticky thread up here for people to just shoot the breeze (bit unfair on the breeze I know) through the season. What do you think fellas? I know not all of you pop into the forum.
The Fear
good idea Fear. The forums get a bit long winded for me, you can only see the last couple of posts so the general gist of the discussion gets lost quite quickly
UTV
Just seen this on the live text on the bbc - "My uncle works at a well known restaurant in Birmingham and has just served Wolves striker Sylvain Ebanks-Blake with Martin O'Neill and a guy I don't recognise. He ordered scampi."
Mutley73
Mutley73, I've just seen the same comment... surely a wind-up, don't you think?
Athens Villa
Sure it is, I don't think MON eats scampi!
Mutley73
what duz &amp mean?
villian?umhu
I think that's our lot gents! Surely, if something big was going through today, we would have heard more concrete rumours by now. Oh well, still a good summers spending but must admit I think we're missing a striker. Maybe he'll wait until Jan.
In MON we trust!
There were no rumors about Berba going to Man City - you just never know in this footballing world. Here's a quote from John Carew from just now on SSN. "Looking at Liverpool on Sunday, we have nothing to be scared of." - John Carew about breaking that top 4 stranglehold this year.
los_angeles_villan
I hope we don't wait until Midnight and nothing happens! I would prefer it if MON would say nothing is going to happen if that's the case! Fingers crossed though!
AVGD
i think that cud happen AVGD cant see anything apart from a random rubbish loan signing materialising now ,, why dont we go n bid 30m 4 berba ? even tho he will not cum it wud show ambition and we have been told we can spend up 2 30m on a player !!!!
villian?umhu
Did anyone see this on wikipedia, someone taking the *****... On 1st September 2008 Ashton signed a four year contract for Aston Villa in a £14.5 million transfer. He was quoted as saying - "I'm so pleased to have my West Ham days behind me. Love the club, just can't stand the fans. Up the Villa".
Eircol
i'm pretty sure there will be another signing. prob not a player we've heard of though, like salifou last year!! MON loves his deadline deals
UTV
I don't want that sulking Berba in our dressing room villan?umhu.
los_angeles_villan
Liverpoo's vital site has a poll saying which chasing pack player they would like the most with our Ashley Young ealding quiote comfortably with 45% and Barry only with 5% they can keep dreaming and Young has abit more sense than to play for a team made of liver and poo. And a big LOL who keeps editing Ashtons wiki page it said that he signed for Newcastle a couple hours ago and then i seen someone bring it up again saying he had signed for Villa lol
AussieVilla
Sky Sports News have said that Joey Barton will be leaving Newcastle United for another Premier League team. But says it will only be for a club that finished in the top 10. No club has been named. I really hope Villa are not the club in for him.
villa for ever
Anyone heard anything on any transfers. Nothing has been said on Sky Sports News. I wonder if something will be said on Dean Ashton. The title says in the Birmingham Mail ' VILLA MOVE IN ON 15M ASHTON. '
villa for ever
Barton ........gimme a break he's a flamin thug shouldn't even be allowed to play football. On the Doyle thing I would quite like to see him at VP he can score goals just think what MON can do with him.
happyvillan
villa 4 ever ! u got me excited then ! that report is not a new one it is 6 hours old ! :(
villian?umhu
Professional thug Barton to villa? no thanks. But it just the typical sort of buy mons been known for, player with something to prove, but im afraid hes had enough chances before.
villain76
I really hope the Barton story is complete rubbish. I agree with happyvillan, the guy's a thug, and why buy a bozo who could easily end up with a 12 month ban? Not someone I would want to see at VP. Ashton though, with service from Milner, Young and Routledge, would give us something totally different than we have already.
Darth Villan
I am 99.999% sure that Barton is NOT on O'Neills radar (mainly coz the source is the Mirror) but I can tell you this - I hate that**** and if he ever signs for us I can honestly say I will not attend an Aston Villa FC football match for as long as he is at the club. But that wont happen - the Toon Army need him too much coz we got their star midfielder last week!!!
deano.avfc
Personally I don't like Joey Barton one bit. He's vile man with an attitude towards other people that stinks. __________________________________________________________________ However, I think he can do a job for us. Controversial I know, but that's my belief. He's the only guy playing now that reminds me of Roy Keane in his prime. Though I'd hope he's never allowed to speak for the club, or attend any PR events!!! __________________________________________________________________ Anybody else think he could do a job for us?
evoflash
I wanted him before he signed for newcastle but at the same time he assaulted Dabo and that girl in MacDs and i went off him. Scum. And he hasnt played anywhaere near as well for the toon as he did at man city so good job i'm not in charge.
MOGVILLA
Evoflash you may be right he might be able to do a job but there are some times you have weigh up right from wrong and signing this piece of excrement is just plainly morally wrong END OF.
happyvillan
On Sky Sports News - The reporter who is talking about the Midlands transfers says that Martin O'Neil is still on the lookout for a striker, but says that a deal for Dean Ashton is unlikely, while a deal for Reading striker Kevin Doyle is possible.
villa for ever
I hope this is just someone at the barcodes spreading a rumour & mentioning us because they're annoyed by the milner signing. Doubt MON would want him.
chrisd4villa
Barton!!!!! No ******** chance. He is not fit to wipe my ass let alone wear the shirt.
Villa-in-my-Blood
what the hell does &amp mean !?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!
villian?umhu
Barton would be a shocking signing and it would undo all that good work of the Acorns deal and good will the club seem to be building around the country. If this were to happen I would be extremely upset.
notthedougellisstand
yeh what does & mean?? anyway milner, routeledge, barry, petrov, sidwell, reo coker, A young, salifou, osbourne why would we need barton and when would he play? its got to be bol****s.
johnmurphy3112
This can not be happening, First we are linked with Joey Barton, and now i have just heard that we might be in for Emile Heskey. I would take Kevin Doyle over Heskey any day.
villa for ever
the & thing happens when someone tries to type the curly symbol for the word "and" above number 7 on a keyboard. - Like this Carew and Agbonlahor works but Carew & Agbonlahor does not!!
deano.avfc
Where are the signings, Martin O'Neil has reportedly said he is looking at as many as 2 or 3 signings before the deadline. Not even one has arrived yet.
villa for ever
Barton...........No way. MON is more sensible than that. Zigic has been loaned out to Santander. Ashton would be good but i don't think it will happen. Doyle and Heskey look favourites but they will be panic buys in my opinion.
bellywipes
Break the bank for David Villa. Man City have placed bid apparently. God we gotta have a chance on him then aint we???
bellywipes
The reporter in the Sky Sports News studio who is giving information out regarding transfers says he is trying to get hold of Martin O'Neil. But the reporter says he understands there is business going on at Villa Park.
villa for ever
Almost 1 hour left and STILL no one. COME ON MARTIN.

Reading have confirmed no ins or outs now - thats Doyle a no go. Can I go to bed now?? Or will something happen??
deano.avfc
signing a new tea lady? Sorry - tea person
Gordonsleftboot
Villa must still be trying to do business because the reporter in the Sky Sports News Studio is starting to round everything up now. He says Arsenal are doing noting, Fulham and Reading are doing nothing. If Villa were done, the reporter would have said so.
villa for ever
wishful thinking villa for ever?
Gordonsleftboot
well ive heard shrewsbury town have finished and that hasnt been reported yet funnily enough!! ! ! ! ITS OVER LADS !!!!
villian?umhu
I cant take it
medzy
Robinho to Man City just shows that we COULD go and attract a big player if we wanted. I honestly thought that we would really break the £15m barrier and make a massive signing. However it has been a terrific window and I am delighted with the signings. Would have loved a RB and a striker (Corluka and Ashton??) but it has been a lot better than I thought it would have been!!!
deano.avfc
we have spent 42 mil
Pking
It's not going to happen is it :-(
fallenbranches
Oh yeah I know Pking - and we have kept an £18m rated player so are technically £60m worth of talent up that we did not think we would have. Just used to a last min deal for the Villa!!! All the talk was about a striker being signed today!! We certainly have enough to get us through to the January window at least. Well done Randy, Martin and Co!!
deano.avfc
Derby turned down a £2m bid for Giles Barnes from Newcastle - would be nice to up that to £3m and get him - there are still 3mins you know!!! Haha!!! Thats us - goodnight!!
deano.avfc
I feel a bit low myself, but alot of the players we have signed on deadline day have been crap.
Pking
still we've spend 42 on 8 man city spend 34 on 1 ! there is a difference that is what you need to do to break the gap !!!!
villian?umhu
I dont know if Robinho is worth 32.5 mil
Pking
and its !!!!!!!!!! over ! lol
villian?umhu
Well it was 11-8 to the Vital Villa boys!!! Good effort lads!!!
deano.avfc
I stayed up for this............
evoflash
We could always try a cheeky last minute bid for Vassell?
Pking
The transfer window is now CLOSED. I wonder if anything went through at the last second.
villa for ever
Apparently were one of two clubs in for joey barton http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2008/09/01/exclusive-aston-villa-are-one-of-two-clubs-trying-to-sign-joey-barton-115875-20720584/ doubt it cos keegan probably hates us for taking milner and obviously bartons a car crash himself
AussieVilla
Don't be silly. Villa are never gonna do that Robinho transfer. That sort of thing destabilises a team. We have had a great trandfer window, and we will finish above Man City this season.
ThirtyOne
Gutted we didn't get Ashton as it would have given us another option and given Gabby a kick up the rectum area. WTF are M.Citeh doing! Huge gamble but I can't see it paying off the way they play. Robinho would have been better off staying at R Madrid surely. I am overall happy though with what MON has brought in and let's hope we remain injury free til the next transfer window cos we only have 3 strikers! UTV.
holte ender 1969
could we have signed someone but just were 2 tired to report it?? one can hope.. (evertons last signing was only reported after 1am)
aussie_villan
I wouldn`t stick too much money on that Thirtyone :-) Think Man City will replace Everton in that top 5 especially if they are there or there abouts in Jan.
ASPINALL
I think if thats just the start by Man City, then we got some serious comp for 4th/5th place next season. I really wanted a striker but overall happy with this window.
erv2005
The Robinho signing for Man City proves to me that O'Neill is afraid to go for exceptional talent. It seems he prefers to buy "has-beens" or mediocrity and hope for the best. Top4 this season, no chance!
villacross
villacross, are you for real? man city have blown chelsea out of the water over the robiniho signing. this abu capital guy is far wealthier than abramovich. this is another echelon of wealth in the premier league, and if chelsea cant compete with it how the hell do you expect oneill/lerner to - its outrageous. not to mention the £200k a week they have given robiniho.
Stig
very true, his wages are what make this a rediculous transfer. But hell, they can obviously afford it. I'm amazed Robinho has settled for a team not even in Europe. I guess he'll have Jo and Elano for company there. He must have REALLY wanted to leave Madrid!!
UTV
He must have REALLY wanted to leave Madrid!! - nothing to do with £200k a week then? And a winger? Will he replace SWP? Don't know much about Robinho to be honest but what a panic buy - albeit that it is just meant as a marker to the rest.
Gordonsleftboot
Man City got rid of the murdering tycoon* then. Good. Apparently this guy dwarfs Abramovich...but as history goes to show, it aint how rich you are but how good you are at managing a team...we still have achance of breaking the top 5 under MON and I believe we will. Man City will be our biggest rivals and i stillstand firm that Everton are going to have a poor season and that Arsenal are not going to struggle half as much as people reckon. Bring it on. We may not have bought a striker but things will change and you can bet MON will sort it - eventually - in his own way - and that in the meantime we will shout 'told ya we needed a striker' - then MON will exceed expectations and once again trump us all. Up the Villa. The season starts here.
koolbill
well said. nice and positive. Money will only get you so far as Real Madrid and Barce have both proved when they've had random bad seasons due to poor management. MON and RL have always said that it is a long term plan and this window has been the biggest step towards that so far. I expect a solid season, good performances in the cups and a strong league finish, but nothing spectacular. Next transfer window we will spend in a similar manner but probably less players for more money each now that we have the base to the team sorted. Also, I imagine Robinho will be taking Ireland's place rather than SWP's. UP THE VILLA
UTV
I believe I am for real and not living in a dream world like most of the commentators posting here here over the last few weeks. I didn't expect O'Neill to spend big for the first one or two seasons until he had taken stock of all that was available. But this is now his 3rd and probably his last if he doesn't get into contention for the Champions League. I accept that the squad is probably the best we have seen at VP for 10 years or more - but it is still way short of what is required - in my opinion we only have 5 players worthy of playing at the top level - Young, Laursen, Barry, Bouma and Petrov. The capability of the rest of the squad will assist only to maintain mid-table performance with prehaps the exception of Reo Coker and Milner who will almost certainly continue to develop under O'Neill and possibly Friedel if he can sharpen up his act and stop "dropping clangers". So finally to repeat my earlier comment we should now expect O'Neill to put down some markers for toip class quality - we didn't even try to buy SWP but settled for Milner a lower cost version of similar products. If the Club is serious about Top4 ambition they have no alternative than to match the wages and transfewr fees paid by them, year in, year out - otherwise come clean. Man City have now put down their "marker"; will AV lead the field or follow behind?
villacross
Milner was £10-12m and is our record signing (more than Davies, Young or Angel) and SWP was £9m. He has not chosed a lower cost version - Routledge was yes but not Milner. I firmly believe MON has a certain player for each role in his mind and he gets them exactly. Some world-class players would not have what MON requires - that is why the move was made for Heskey (if rumours are to be believed) as it fits the prototype O'Neill likes - thats why Reo-Coker and Gardner are alternative RBs as he has not found one exactly to his specification and he is prepared to wait for it. He must now be content with his starting XI and most of his squad. My only doubt is Carew and Gabby having little competition but based on last season we are not a striker down (except maybe Luke Moore) and we scored 71 goals - we now have more creativity so should not stuggle scoring goals. If however we had no competition at the back I would worry as conceding is our problem. To sum up from this long rant O'Neill has ended the season thinking 'How can we improve?' two answers - more squad players to challenge first XI and improve defensively. Has he done this - that must be a yes!!! Oh and by the way - if we do need RB and STRIKERcover we could still go for Steven Carr and Robbie Fowler!!! ;-)
deano.avfc
Oh - what is the situation with loans - I think there is a loan window opening soon but do not know the ins and outs. If there is do you think we need a striker on loan and if so who would you go for!! I think the days of Man Utd and Liverpool lending us players may be over as we are a top side!
deano.avfc
I think you'll get a far more consistent performance from Milner than SWP however judging by yesterdays events the goalposts have now moved regarding transfers in the PL
Red Wimp
Good luck to citeh, but is mark hughes strong enough to handle a team of multi-million pound primadonnas? the money they will put into the club wll be massive, but I can see it back firing they're looking or a quickfix to get results, I'm happy to keep with the MON/Randy 5 year plan.
johnmurphy3112
johnmurphy3112 - 5 year plan - Top4 in 2011? More likely the lead-in for O'Neill's 60th birthday and his retirement party.
villacross
Change the record Villacross, we know what you think of the current set up. Why keep repeating it?
tarzan
I cant believe a s*** boring average club like man city have been taken over by somebody richer than abramovic?? What was that investment group thinking??? Randy seems like a top bloke, Im well happy with him. An endless supply of money would be sweet for us but eventually its going to ruin the beautiful game. Gutted we didnt get anotha striker. Roll on jan
medzy
Villacross, cheer up matey, it's not all that bad, we're a million miles from two seasons ago and i for one would have bitten your hand off for this team and our prospects if offered it two seasons ago! It's better if you remember where we've come from VC. Now sit back and enjoy the ride...
koolbill
Medzy - I know what you mean about ruining the game. I was delighted when Randy took over and the 'we are considerably richer than yow' feeling. But it will ruin, as ruined, the game. Other than by a considerable cash input will a club like Forest etc who gelled for a time ever challenge the top 4, 5 or 6 without the dosh. Never again will we see anyone without cash challenge for the title.
Gazvilla
tarzan - there;s nothing wrong with the set-up at Board level. They operate very professionally in everything they do. I have nothing but praise fror what they have achieved in two years. All they need to realise is that O'Neill has passed his "sell-by" date and should make way for someone able to put together a team capable of winning trophies. O'Neill is very well paid and still allows Carew to shhot his mouth off when on Sunday he was diabolical against Liverpool, cramp after 60mins - how fit is that? He's now beginning to look like Baros and just here for his wages for the next four years.
villacross
Maybe this man city thing is the wake up call MON needs to realise that we HAVE to start buying the Top players availsble. We'll never be able to win trophies if we settle for home-based players all the time. We need to step up to the next level. English players are all well and good, and i dont want to sound negative about it but are they going to take us where we want to be??? Just a thought
medzy
Villacross how do you expect us to match man city exactly? Do you want to fund it? Do you not think that MON is going after the best players we can realistically sign? Perhaps they just don't want to join because we have been, let's face it, pretty much rubbish in the last decade. Compare our summer spending to the clubs who finished around us last season...besides the freak show that is man city, I'd say we have done quite well! To be honest I sat through every home game and a lot of away games through the John Gregory, Graham taylor era and I'm just happy it's not that boring any more :) So I don't think it's your place to come here and criticise the 'commentators' on this site as you choose to call them, when your wishes for Villa appear to be something out of Champ Manager. Get a grip, be realistic and be happy with the best Villa squad in many many years.

villiacross - I really am not bothered about competing with the top four. It's quite funny as the Top 4 fans don't understand that. I'm happy with some minor successes over the season and seeing some of our young players develop, I've supported Villa long enough now, that its just a bonus if we play well. At least life is interesting with MON in charge. I do admit people are black and white with regards to our manager and he's not everyone's cup of tea, I accept that point of view. It's quite interesting to see some Celtic fans after Sundays result, blaming the manager, some wanting him out - he's just won them 3 championships! Strachan's record stacks up well against MON's but a lot of Celtic fans would have our manager back there in a flash.
tarzan
To change the subject totally I can't wait for Ceullar and Sidwell to come in. The latter providing much needed competition in midfield and defence. Sidwell must have been bought iwth Barry leaving mind, Petrov's already upped his game.
tarzan
I think Sidders was bought with playing with Barry in mind, NRC had some awful passing last season and Mart must have bought him to compete or compliment him with Barry having some of the responsibilty lifted from his shoulders. I cannot wait for Sidders to click - it'll probably take about 8 games but he'll be storming - just like all the new guys will have gelled after 7 or more games. The football is going to get better and better and that means even people like Marlon will get more confident and score more goals...just look at that back heel to Carew for his goal - WOW! Once he stops doing those lame side foots - sorts his calf out and starts whacking them you can can be sure we'll be in for a stormer. Cuellar I'm just salivating about. Oh and just to reiterate - Shorey will come good. I'd put my house on him eventually being one of our best players throughout the season, you don't just lose class.
koolbill
Milner was IMO the perfect signing. We could see a fair few Carew headers from Milner crosses.
Sam_Imp
"your wishes for Villa appear to be something out of Champ Manager" hahahahaha very funny comment! There's loads of Champ Man people on the various boards with outlandish claims and player recommendations. does make me chortle :-)
evoflash
Just wonder how everybody will view the window's activities come Tuesday morning. Overall I think we've done well, things certainly looking brighter than they were a few weeks back numbers wise, but I personally would like to see a couple more strikers in. Never happy are we?
glensider
I think a lot of people are jealous of City, well I'm happy certainly happy would prefer a couple of strikers as most have said, but we should improve defensively and grab more goals from midfield so hopefully our goal difference should see a big improvement. After this window I feel confident to say that MON will grab us at least one striker come January (it will be very late January). Besides when we win the UEFA cup every1 will be very happy with this window ;)
Tez86
Too many 'happys' in the first sentence sorry!
Tez86
Can't believe 17% have voted that the last transfer window was poor...I think, apart from another striker and perhaps a midfielder 'star', like Riqueleme, it's been really good. Cuellar, Sidwell, Milner and Friedel are great, great buys...
olafthegreat
Is it not a bit hypocritical of Villa fans to be complaining about rich foreign owners?Lerner has done nothing but good but some are now complaining that he's not rich enough, its outrageous.
Pking
Tez86, i've got one thing to say to you pal: Happy happy happy happy cookie happy cookie Happy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookieHappy happy happy happy cookie happy cookie! ;-)
koolbill
pking i agree with you. RL loves the club and it's all about what's spent in the market. What happens behind the scenes and how the club conducts itself is just as important. RL has that spot on
UTV
Curbishley gone.....let's put in a bid to get ASHTON on loan now!!!! Can we do that? Is the loan window closed? Strike while the iron's hot. I absolutely knew and stated that when the Icelander came and Curbs bought both Dyer and Bellend that this would end in tears. Very poor judgement by Curbs with player selection, very poor. Cost him the job. Anyhow, just shows you how good Martin is eh? We have spent wisely and slowly and morally. We will reap the benefits and should now start the wheels turning with Ashton, even if it's a pre-contract agreement...All in favour say: Aye!
