The countdown is on with just a few days left of the transfer window remaining and Aston Villa are still on the look out for new recruits.

The big news is James Milner, the Newcastle Utd winger who spent a season on loan with Villa two years ago, handing in a transfer request at St James' Park - with Martin O'Neill reportedly keen on the England U-21 winger.

There's also an update on Gareth Barry's future with time running out, as well as the manager's thoughts on other prospective transfer targets.

Never gives too much away does our Martin, but that of course is the way it should be. I'd hoped to see another proven quality striker come onboard prior to the deadline, we are still very short up front, an injury or two away from trouble. The Hare is great as an impact sub, but over ninety minutes I feel he is lacking. We need options. What we have surely cant be expected to cope with EUFA Cup, the domestic knockout tournament and the premiership games too? Injuries/suspensions/loss of form are bound to hit.

He gets criticised for not buying overseas, but when you consider all the pro's and con's to bringing in relatively unknown quantities, I'm happy he takes the route he does.
