Villa Boss Says Villa Can Be Uefa Contenders

Martin O'Neill has spoken ahead of this Thursday's UEFA Cup qualifier against FH Hafnarfjordur which is surely, as we are 4-1 up, a formality. A win will put Villa into the first round draw which takes place on Friday at 1pm.

The Villa boss told the official site that he truly believes Villa can be 'contenders' in the competition, however he also warns that Villa have to stay focussed on the league as well.

He said: 'I want us to be involved and if we go out it will be a big disappointment but the whole idea here is eventually to build a squad so we are capable of making a challenge and sustaining it. I think we are contenders, I think we would be that, but we wouldn't have any guarantees. Look at Tottenham - they won the League Cup last season but their league form suffered through it and you would have never imagined it with the team they had.'

Adding, 'So we are capable of contending, but whether we are good enough is another issue. That's something you look at but the only way to be able to cope with that is to have the squad.'

So some more arrivals this week please Mr O'Neill, it is the only way we can be serious contenders and also look to compete in the league and cup competitions.

It is brilliant just being back in europe and even thinking about things like this,Aston villa football club belongs in europe simple as that.

We will be one of the teams others will want to avoid in the draw.
Silver Fox
Fingers crossed for a good run in the competition. God knows we're absolutely hopeless in the English cups!

Its gonna be tough, but I hear what you're saying Mart, and I'm with you. Agree with lerneravfc, its just great to be back on the european stage, we've been away far too long. Hopefully we'll enjoy a decent run, shake up a few teams along the way, and let european football know that Aston Villa is back in business.

Silver Fox is correct in what he says. Other teams will surely want to avoid us. Its our chance to ruffle a few feathers. Get the defence sorted, one or two new faces in (mind you times running out) and we look good to go as far as I'm concerned.
