'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tuesday's Aston Villa Press Transfer Talk

The countdown to the end of the transfer window is on and the nerves will be jangling with many managers and fans alike!

Martin O'Neill has made no secret of the fact that he wants at least 1 or 2 more players in, will he get them? Well, he has a habit of leaving things late, so who knows! Wonder if there are any other Swiss Second Division players available!?!? (Ok, sarcasm isn't the most intelligent form of wit!!)

So who is linked today?

Only Reading's Kevin Doyle as far as I can see, The Daily Mail amongst others suggest Villa are getting closer to a 7.5m signing of the striker. That contradicts Steve Coppell's comments in the press yesterday that he had no calls for the player and that the 24-year-old wasn't for sale.

Shaun Wright-Phillips is being linked to Everton and a return to Manchester City. It will be interesting to see if Villa enter this race, we were supposedly close to getting him on loan last Jan so he must have been a fancied player for MON at some stage.

Meanwhile a report in the Guardian say that Liverpool are close to buying Espanyol winder Albert Riera which they say will draw to an end the Gareth Barry saga.

Do you expect any new signings this week (remember the transfer window closes Sept 1 as the 31 Aug is a Sunday) Our poll asks that very question, which is a happy coincidence!

I'd like a right winger, another striker and cover at right back but not sure if we'll get any. You get the impression any players that are on our radar that were attainable would be in by start of season. Would like SWP over Milner.
johnnyuk
I'm available on a free...I'm a utility player like Ricardo Shimica was, which is to say i'm awful everywhere! worth bringing in as cover?
mtones
Did anyone pick up on the story that was on Vital Yeovil the other day that said we were in for their best player.
Pking
It looks like if we are going to buy from the domestic market, we are waiting for Liverpoo, Everton and Arsenal to start the ball rolling. If barry is to leave I do hope it`s to Arsenal, just after Poo sell Alonso.
Fletch
Agree with you Fletch, we need someone to get the ball rolling. Here's my prediction (it's a longshot!): Chelsea buy Robinho, They sell Malouda to Newcastle, Newcastle sell Milner to us. As for the strikers, I would not want Kevin Doyle though that guy Zigic could be worth a punt, especially if it's a loan deal.
stpaulmcgrath
Would be some pretty unhappy people here if we went in for doyle, esp at the quoted 7-8 mil.
johnnyuk
I would be unhappy with Doyle for that kind of money for sure. He isnt going to break our 1st team and to be honset I am happier with the Hare and our kids for back up. We should be looking at a striker who can walk into the 1st team and make Carew and Gabby raise thier game.
Tez86
Also I would probably be interested in seeing if Malouda is available for ourselves (if we could afford his wages) He was quality in France and I think now he has had a year to settle he could be a good shout.
Tez86
Difficult to bringe in a striker unless they are an automatic pick like S.Cruz. Doyle would at least be happy to warm the bench, but 7M is far too much. Would prefer a loan arrangement with a buy option. For midfield I cant see Milner coming in, and SWP didnt fancy brum in Jan did he? I'd love to see a loan bid for Saviola - we need a midfielder who can help us keep possesion and carve ut openings.
paranoid_ormandroyd
malouda...definatly...NOT!!! did not see that idiot play 1 half decent game last year and is obviously there for the money. if we bought him i think MON would kill him by september the 2nd! milner would be good as he seems the only english winger that has an end product to his game.saviola would be a joy to see at VP and is capable of 20+ goals a season.
rhymez1
Diego Milito, Gokhan Inler, Joaquin, Franco Semioli, Mario Santana, Ricardo Montilivo, Kuzmanovic??????? Any of the above would be nice...
NorthcliffeBandit
The squad is the same size as last season & nobody seems to give a flying fish. Kevin Doyle is usless but is Reo-Joker is 8.5m then at 7.5m he is a bargin. MON i think has completley lost the plot he is now saying that we one day will have the squad to compete so that tells me we will be signing nobody. He said he would deal with the small squad & he hasn't. We are going to finish mid table.

Just found this on the Beeb's Transfer Rumours webpage: Newcastle and Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Standard Liege midfielder Marouane Felliani, although they could be put off by the Belgian club's 10m price tag. (Daily Mail) Any thoughts?
Athens Villa
This too: Aston Villa will press ahead with plans to sign James Milner for 9m from Newcastle. (Guardian)

Aparantrly we're in for that standard liege midfielder. Watch him run Liverpool ragid tonight!
leelindsay
Can I throw Michael Owen into the mix ... and then run away very quickly with abuse chasing me down the street? 20 goals a season man in the last year of his contract with apparent disquiet amongst the Newcastle board. Time to cash in? Saw bits of Milner on the TV last night and he looked excellent.
Silver Fox
Yes, if he could stay fit I'd agree re: Owen, but that is a big if! Did have a thread in the forum and I think most disagreed with us Silver Fox! Click Here for Owen thread
The Fear
I like that look of that young Leeds striker, Jason Beckford. I've obviously only seen him on the t.v., not the ideal vantage point I admit, certainly not for making judgements on players abilities and capabilities, but he looks a natural finisher to me. Not the finished product, but definitely one well worth bringing onboard.

Jinksy, I think you thrive on negativity. Do you never have anything positive or upbeat to comment upon. Talk about an ace doom and gloom merchant!
