Carew and Gabby - The Ideal Strikeforce

Carew and Gabby - The Ideal Strikeforce

I'll try to not be too negative here, but Nicky shorey believes Carew and Gabby compliment each other perfectly in attack.

Speaking on the official site Shorey expresses how impressed he's been with the pace and power of our two frontmen since he joined the club, and he's sure they will have a massive influence on our season.

'They are a great combination. Gabby and John are two players that are tough to come up against in training! But I suppose training with them day in and day out will only improve my game defensively.

'John is so strong and holds the ball up really well. He is so powerful and such an outlet for us defenders. We can get it up to him and we know he will be able to keep hold of the ball and give us a breather.

'That's a big part of his game and I don't know anyone better at it than him.

'He is the perfect foil for Gabby. John holds the ball up and used his strength so Gabby can dart in there with his pace.

'They are a good pairing and I'm sure they will score us a lot of goals this season.'

Once Gabby learns to read and anticipate Carew's flicks I'm sure between them they will score a hatful but the understanding isn't their yet and they don't work as a team.

Sometimes it gells for a bit and they both look unstoppable, on other occassions it's like they've never played together before.

Again, like our defensive problems, that will surely come in time and hopefully we'll have more good days than bad from them both, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they are the perfect couple just yet.

They certainly could be, and I suppose this is a downside of having young and developing players in the team, but it'll come.

They may work perfectly together on the training pitch, it just generally takes a little longer for that to work in competative games.

Gabby should be put on the problem right wing asap even though Routledge does look good on the ball when he plays. At least then we could give Carew a hand up front. I can't remember Gabby passing to him hardly ever whereas Carew flicks countless balls onto him or into space.

I have to say that most games they look like they have never met before ? They certainly never work as a pair do they ? or did I miss that game ?

Cant help agreeing with Villan57. We must have missed the same game where Agbonlahor could see Carew in space!

Whats going on i didnt read any of this type of criticism after last weeks opening victory over Man City. I am sure Nicky Shorey being a pro footballer and team mate to both Gabby and Big John is better placed and more informed than we are to give a positive opinion of our front two. It was a bitter pill to swallow losing in the manner we did at Stoke, but lets not forget big Johns excellent finish to score the first goal. Lets all take a step back and think positive and look forward to our next home game VILLA IN EUROPE we are moving forward and getting better bit by bit. It takes time and there are always going to be set backs but i am sure Gabby and Big John will get us plenty of goals this season. Two League games FIVE ALREADY

Yes we are top scorers in the league but also top conceders. Remember last year when Carson went 20 odd games without a clean sheet. We won't finish 6th if we do that this year and we definitely won't get away with that in Europe as shown in our early cup exits last year. MON used to pride his teams on cup runs????

Villan444: Have you taken leave of your senses man? Gabby is NOT a winger, or didn't you see those games last season and the season before when MON played him there? I'm not saying that the Carew/Gabby partnership is a world beater but putting Gabby on the right is NOT the answer. Let's not forget we finished as 3rd highest scorers in the premiership last season so the two of them must be doing something right.

Jonah, we finished top scorers because Laursen, Young and Barry also scored many goals. Agbonlahor and Carew were way behind the Santa Cruz, Drogba, Ronaldo, Adabayor etc crews. We scored mainly from set play and not because of any good combination play between Agbonlahor and Carew. Not that I want to critisise them, they both did well, but they are hardly a strike partnership, but I agree that Agbonlahor is definitely a central stiriker and not a winger!

villa_de, Yes I know, I was there. Tell me a team where the midfield players don't score goals. We scored a lot from set pieces because we scored a lot in total. If you look at the stats you will discover that the scum scored a higher percentage of their goals from set pieces than any other team in the premiership last season.

They are far from the perfect strike partnership in my opinion, but they both score goals, without actually working in tandem. They cause the opposition trouble game after game, both are indeed a handful. Its a very unorthodox pairing, but on most occasions it seems to work. We do though need an additional proven quality strikers to provide options, alternatives, because there are definitely times when one or both are struggling, and we are crying out for a fresh approach.

They've bagged five goals between them in two premiership games, on the surface thats not too shabby. Both have also scored in our european adventure, so really I cant see how we can be overly critical of them, its certainly not their fault that we need an alternative outlet. Come on Martin. Get it sorted.
