Premiership Preview - 2008/09 Season

Premiership Preview - 2008/09 Season

It promises to be a great season, as so many of the sides have the potential to make Europe this year. But I think a major talking point could be if the "untouchable" top four is broken into. Man City, Aston Villa, Everton and Portsmouth are among the favourites to get in there, but Spurs and Newcastle could put a bad season behind them and surprise a few. New boys Stoke and Hull will be out to shock a few, and will Man Utd be able to beat off Chelsea for another season?

The new season is here, and so is my preview!!!

Unlike most previews in papers etc, I have moved away from the top signing category and instead have opted to put the signing I think could be a potential flop, in the cases of Man Utd and Everton (who are yet to make a signing) I have chosen a current squad member. Please enjoy and be sure to leave me your feedback.

So the league table according to my reasoning will look like this:

1 Manchester United
2 Chelsea
3 Liverpool
4 Aston Villa
5 Everton
6 Arsenal
7 Tottenham
8 Portsmouth
9 Manchester City
10 Newcastle
11 West Ham
12 Sunderland
13 Fulham
14 Middlesbrough
15 Bolton
16 Hull
17 Blackburn
18 West Brom
19 Wigan
20 Stoke

The full run down:

Arsenal

Key Player - Cesc Fabregas, one of the league`s finest players, fresh from winning Euro 2008, he will want to help Wenger`s young side win some silverware. Why Gallas has the armband and not this lad is beyond me!!
Potential Flop - Samir Nasri, I do not know much of this young man but although Wenger has a knack of signing wonder kids, this lad may be the exception (okay, I am clutching at straws!!)
Season Ahead - Arsenal have lost Lehmann, Hleb, Gilberto and Flamini, they have been replaced by younger players. I do wonder if Arsenal can cope without that experience, Gallas being the only over 30 I can think of at the club. I think they will drop from the Top 4. 6th

Aston Villa

Key Player - Martin Laursen, possibly the club captain this season, he has already been compared by some Villa fans as the new Paul McGrath, he is a threat at set pieces and as strong as any defender currently plying their trade in the league.
Potential Flop - Carlos Cueller, seen as many as a superb buy, well he may well be, but he is no doubt going to be compared to Boumsong who was a real flop at Newcastle. I hope he is great signing, but I will wait till I see him before passing judgement.
Season Ahead - Martin O`Neill has been a busy beaver in the transfer market, much to the delight of the Villa faithful. I think that the team will build on 6th and will finish either in the top 4 or just outside. Will Barry stay? I think he will and I think he will help the team push on. 4th

Blackburn

Key Player - Matt Derbyshire, this youngster is a real goalscorer, He scored a late winner against Newcastle last season and will become a major part of the team under Paul Ince.
Potential Flop - Julio Santa Cruz, signed because of his brother, Roque. It will be interesting to see if he is even half the player his brother is.
Season Ahead - Paul Ince is my bet for the first managerial casualty of the season, I think he is in for a baptism of fire, and after losing his two star players and a third likely to follow, it is going to be a long hard season for Rovers. 17th

Bolton

Key Player - Kevin Nolan, how this lad has not got an England cap, i don`t know!! He has been the best player at Bolton for about 5 seasons, and not only is a great midfielder he is also a real goal threat.
Potential Flop - Johan Elmander, £10million is a lot to spend on a player with no Premiership experience, an this Swedish international may have the goals in him, but only time will tell if he is the man to fill Anelka`s boots.
Season Ahead - I don`t think Bolton will do too badly, I just think other teams have made better signings. Gary Megson will no doubt enjoy some good results, I see abit of Martin O`Neill in him, I think losing Diouf can only be a good thing. 15th

Chelsea

Key Player - John Terry, despite all the foreign players on the books, this English lad is still the first name on the team sheet, not only that he is also the captain, he will be desperate to put THAT penalty miss behind him.
Potential Flop - Deco, people are talking him up, I doubt anyone else thinks he will be major flop, potentially he could be the reason the neutrals watch MOTD, but potentially he may be back in Spain by January.
Season Ahead - Scolari is looking to have a Galatico type side, Deco, Kaka and Robinho, if he pulls it off then I think it could actually be their downfall, the fact is the big players will do more harm than good, Lampard and Terry have twice the heart of any of the other stars. 2nd

Everton

Key Player - Tim Cahill, when fit he is probably the best midfielder in the league outside of the top 4, if he can stay injury-free then he will be a big player for Everton this season.
Potential Flop - Dan Gosling, an 18 that was signed in January, yet to make his debut, but will he be good enough and with Arteta, Cahill and Piennar ahead in the pecking order, will he even get the chance?
Season Ahead - David Moyes will be the next Man Utd manager, he has established Everton as a top side. I am sure they will have a great season and possibly win a cup along the way too. The lack of transfer activity could be their downfall. 5th

Fulham

Key Player - Andy Johnson, a club record fee, he has goals in him and he is likely to be the key to Hodgson`s plans, if he can get the goals then who knows where Fulham will be sat come May?
Potential Flop - Bobby Zamora, another striker, Bobby was touted as a real talent when he was at Brighton, he has struggled for some time and will no doubt want to prove once and for all that he can cut it in the Premiership
Season Ahead - This promises to be a good season for the Cottagers, not only have they spent big again, but they have also spent it on decent players this summer. Losing McBride is no doubt a huge blow but with Johnson coming in he could soon be forgotten. Bullard will be a key player too. 13th

Hull City

Key Player - George Boateng, not many of the players at Hull have even played in the Premiership, Boateng will be a big signing for them, he has the experience and ability to help them survive.
Potential Flop - Geovanni, he was a flop at Man City, it will be interesting to see if he can make an impact for the Tigers.
Season Ahead - Phil Brown took Hull from relegation candidates to shock play-off winners in a matter of months. If he is given the time I think he will shock the 99% of neutrals who have wrongly written them off so soon. Their downfall may be their loyalty to long-serving players. 16th

Liverpool

Key Player - Fernando Torres, this guy is pure class, a real world beater. On his day he is by far the best forward in the league and if Liverpool are going to progress from 4th, then its his goals that will take them there,
Potential Flop - Andrea Dossena, players from Serie A do have a history of struggling in the Premiership (unless they play for Chelsea)
Season Ahead - I hate to say it but I think Liverpool will have a good season; Robbie Keane is a major signing for them. Potentially they may drop from the Top 4, but they are stronger than Arsenal. Rafa`s handling of the Barry saga has been a shocking but I think they will do well. 3rd

Man City

Key Player - Richard Dunne, one of the most consistent players in the league, a model professional and no doubt he will play a big part in Mark Hughes`s plans.
Potential Flop - Jo, little is known of this lad and for the money spent he could be the ultimate flop, lets see how he does……
Season Ahead - A team in crisis? Maybe so, but unless Mark Hughes walks they could still have a good season, with some good youngsters and many top internationals this could be a great year, they may have a chance of Top 6 too. 9th

Man Utd

Key Player - Gary Neville, he seems to have been injured for a decade, but he is set to return to action this season and the Man Utd Captain will no doubt want to show Fabio Capello why he has so many International Caps.
Potential Flop - Cristiano Ronaldo, he has had his head turned by Real Madrid and shown little loyalty to Sir Alex Ferguson, it will be interesting to see how he performs on his return from injury.
Season Ahead - Scolari may be the king of National management but SAF is the master at club level, and he is no doubt looking forward to the latest in a long line of Chelsea managers, whether Ronaldo plays a major part or not, Man Utd still have the quality to go all the way. 1st

Middlesbrough

Key Player - David Wheater, potentially this lad is a future England International, a real threat from set-pieces and just as solid at the back too.
Potential Flop - Didier Digard, this is another Berson in the making, full of potential, but the Premiership is a different kettle of fish to Ligue 1 of France.
Season Ahead - I am not sure what to make of Southgate`s decision to not sign a senior keeper, Schwarzer has gone and he seems quite happy to trust the two young lads, that could be his downfall this season, Boro could possibly have a relegation battle on their hands. 14th

Newcastle

Key Player - Michael Owen, if he can stay fit then his goals are sure to fire Newcastle into the top half of the table.
Potential Flop - Jonas Gutierrez, little is known of the man nicknamed Spider-Man, question is will we all be talking about him come May?
Season Ahead - A team full of quality but they still never seem to do anything, will Keegan last till May? I doubt it very much. I think a few bad results and he will walk, that said Newcastle could still push for a top 6 place, maybe even 4th, if they are lucky!! 10th

Portsmouth

Key Player - David James, arguably the best keeper in the league, on his day he is a World Class shot stopper, he will no doubt play a huge part in any success that Pompey enjoy this season.
Potential Flop - Younes Kaboul, on his arrival at White Hart Lane most expected big things, but he cost Spurs a fair few points, will the fresh start bring the best out of him?
Season Ahead - Love him or hate him Redknapp had a superb year with Portsmouth and became the first manager in a long time to go toe to toe with the top 4 in the FA Cup and walk away victorious. He will be after a top 6 place I am sure, but so many others are too. 8th

Stoke

Key Player - Dave Kitson, the former Reading Striker will no doubt be the key to their survival, if he can hit the goals they need then Stoke could surprise a few.
Potential Flop - Seyi Olofinjana, a favourite at Wolves. How will Seyi cope with the Premiership though?
Season Ahead - Will they be the new Derby? Pulis has a very physical side that will probably see their fair share of Red Cards this season, they have got a real fight on their hands, and really cant see them picking up too many points, good luck to them though. 20th

Sunderland

Key Player - Dean Whitehead, the midfielder has been superb for Sunderland and will hope to continue to build on what was a good year last season.
Potential Flop - El-Hadji Diouf, on his day he is a fine player, but his temper could disrupt the dressing room, I expect him to go head to head with Roy Keane before the end of the season!!
Season Ahead - Roy Keane has signed half the reserve team from Spurs and is hoping he can establish the Black Cats as a top premiership side, there is no doubting that he has a decent squad and if the can work hard and perhaps get a bit of luck too, then top ten is a real possibility. 12th

Tottenham

Key Player - Ledley King, it has been said many times before, but a fit Ledley King is one of the finest Centre Backs in the league. If he can stay fit, then who knows what they will achieve.
Potential Flop - Luka Modric, some say he may be too lightweight for the Premiership, its going to be interesting to see if he can live up to his price-tag.
Season Ahead - Juande Ramos may not have had the best of Premiership seasons last season but he did win the Carling Cup and has improved the side with some potentially world class players, Dos Santos in particular has the making of a quality player. 7th

West Brom

Key Player - Jonathan Greening, club captain with a wealth of experience, has a sublime passing ability too.
Potential Flop - Scott Carson, following a poor season at Aston Villa, it will be interesting to see how he does at the Hawthorns
Season Ahead - The Baggies are back and will be hoping they can keep themselves up and even win a couple of derby games too, they have a decent manager and some fantastic youngsters, the signings of Moore and Carson will either be a master stroke or a waste of money. 18th

West Ham

Key Player - Scott Parker, at Charlton he looked like he would become a top star, following unsuccessful spells at Chelsea and Newcastle, he has now become a key player at Upton Park
Potential Flop - Valon Behrami, he has proven to be a good player in Serie A and on the International scene, but will he cut in the Premiership?
Season Ahead - With a few of the older players now released they will be hoping that the younger lads can help the team push on, James Tomkins has a bright future ahead of him, as have many of the young hammers, Curbishley will have to start well if the team can reach their potential. 11th

Wigan

Key Player - Paul Scharner, he has been a key member of the team since their promotion. His ability to play in Defence and Midfield has made him an invaluable member of Bruce`s squad.
Potential Flop - Olivier Kapo, relegated with Birmingham City, will he be able to put it behind him?
Season Ahead - Steve Bruce is a decent enough manager, but he has lost his battles against relegation more often than not, an although he has some decent players at his disposal, I think the ride is now over for Wigan and the Championship may be home come next August. 19th

Wow YJ, that is mightily impressive. Superb work! Be interesting to see what the fans of other clubs reactions are?!?
The Fear
Arsenal? 6th? Are you mad? Are you madder than Mad Lord McMad of the Mad clan? Well are you?
DeanoVilla
Time and time again Arsene is told his team are not good enough yet technically they are always the best in the league I would say Liverpool if anyone will not be in the top 4. Spurs without a second forward look under pressure, Pompey would be good contenders, Newcastle will improve this year with Owen about at the start that should help their cause, they bought the argentine CB and a few more defenders and they might do well for themselves, i think you saw our position through Claret and blue eyes Iw oudl also imagine West ham improving now that most those injured players are getting back to fitness, Bellamy looks good, Ashton is class
shortshadyuk
Potential Flop? Christiano Ronaldo? Are you mad? Are you madder than..... etc....
DeanoVilla
Sir Alex has stated that he thinks Arsenal will be their biggest rivals this season. Dont forget they were running away with the title last season until injuroes to Van Persie, Eduardo, Hleb, Rosicky etc. If they stay injury free.......... my tip to drop out of the top 4 would be Chelsea. Big Phil has done nothing at club level of note and they are all over 30!
DeanoVilla
Even though i am the biggest everton bummer around they wont finish top half this season. Arsenals youngsters could rape anyone outside the top 4. Middlebrough and Hull have got no chance of getthing that high and Bburn have a good squad to lose that many points from last season. Villa 4th are you mental??? With that squad 1st is on the cards!!!
gavcook83
Can't see Liverpoo that high I think they'll have a bad season because of the board/management/financial issues. 6 or 7th or worse hopefully.
johnmurphy3112
good effort. One thing i notice is that below portsmouth there is a severe lack of quality in those teams. Whilst we seem to be building a really decent squad. Evertons lack of transfer activity, being in europe and loosing carsley and johnson makes me believe that we can finish above them. Hope berba leaves spurs cos then think we'll finish above them to. However i think realistically pool are the weakest team in the top 4 but they rarely loose. So i'm saying 5th for us which is an improvement
_aron_
I apologise to the Wigan fans, I have been very negative to them, but I feel they may struggle. I wish them the best of luck, cause they are a decent side and do have decent support!!! Good Luck.
young_jonah
Second???? Have word with yourself mate! ;)
OLASAL
The writer knows feck all about football, Arse 6th are you deluded Villa 4th..LMAO!! Ever ton 5th and Spurs 7th..Lay of the funny Cigs fella. The top 4 will probably be the same. I can see Villa & Spurs running one of them close but not quite make it this year. Ever ton will find it harder this season as they have a weak squad but a decent team and 1 or 2 injuries and they are done for. Arse will be stronger than last season with more experience behind them and Van Persie fit alongside the prolific Adebayor and them they have Rosicky & Eduardo to welcome back. If Fibreglass gets injured they will struggle in the centre of the pitch but 6th..LOL!!! 9th downwards I would not argue with...don`t give up the day job;o)
cockeril
Wigan? Decent support?!?!? Are you mad??? Are you madder than... this is getting boring now isn't it? I know but its making me laugh and thats all that matters. lol
DeanoVilla
But in YJ's defence atleast he's gone out on a limb. It's so easy to be predictable.
DeanoVilla
Agree with every word Cockeril said. The top 4 will be the usual suspects.
DeanoVilla
The Arsenal one was always going to be one for debate, i realised it as i posted it, the fact is most the team are under 25, dont want to go all Alan Hanson here but I cant see them winning anything with kids, its the first time I have doubted their credentials, they have lost 3 or 4 experienced players, and each has been replaced with someone under 21, no doubt in 5 years time Arsenal will dominate the league for many years to come, but at the moment, these are young lads and they are gonna need some time. For that reason I will stand by my prediction of 6th. But thats not to say I would be surprised if they finished top 4, cause I wouldnt, the quality is undoubtabley there.
young_jonah
Deanovilla, thats the point I have made 3 or 4 controversial predictions up there, and i would be willing to bet at least one comes true. All the pundits annoy me as they are never willing to make a shocking prediction, its always how they finished last year, i.e. Chelsea or Man Utd at the top. WBA, Stoke and Hull at the bottom. But we shall see. I spent the best part of 4 hours typing this article, and if nothing else it will create debate.
young_jonah
It's subjective!!! bloody hell, open opinion, don't have to agree it's one man's opinion!
krisvilla
i'll be controversial, Liverpool to go down, and we all laugh while rafa is coming out saying I want to sign Titus Bramble to tap him up ;-)
krisvilla
Blackburn lower than Hull?!?!? You really are mad.
MikeyGamst
Exactly Krisvilla, if we all did a league it would be very different, i have listed my reasons for most too.
young_jonah
I agree that the top 2 will be the manx and chelski, and after that it is open-house. Liverscums defence and Torres's goals will probably keep them top 4, but Arsenal are in severe danger of dropping down a few places. Villa, Portsmouth and possibly Spuds will be challenging for those places along with liverscum and the arse.
romanianvillain
I think with arsenal is that once they get their consistency going then they will grind more results out. not a bad little article. think the baggies might finish higher tho, i expect them to do a sunderland and hull to do a reading2 years ago
Upthevilla_83
Oh and Julio Santa Cruz is an 18 year old striker. You will be seeing very little of him this season. He will be behind Matty, Benni, Roque and Jason Roberts. I like the article but those are some crazy, extremely dodgy predictions. But well done on being bold.
MikeyGamst
I have to say guys good luck for the season, MON has assembled a very good side there. The signings at the back have been superb and in Friedel you have one of the best keepers in the league and if anything last season Carson was a weak link. I am surprised he has not gone for an out and out fox in the box type striker which is your weak area IMO but then I cannot see you conceding many at all and as always set peices will bring you guys goals. It would be amazing if you guys or Spurs could break that top 4 cartel but I would imagine it may take another season.
cockeril
Cheers MikeyGamst, I like Blackburn, i just think without Friedel and Bentley they will struggle. I dont for one minute think they will be relegated, its not easy to put a position for teams, because truth is Blackburn could finish anywhere. I have basically given them a worse case scenario and Hull a best case scenario, it could easily be different, the factors that come into play and what not, we shall see, good luck for the season dude.
young_jonah
I find it ironic that a Villa fan happens to think Villa will finish 4th...Optimism is a wonderful thing, but delusion is something completely different! Talking about Spurs' big names going to 'bigger' clubs, how long until Ashley Young & Gabby Agbonglahor move on to pastures new to taste European football (not through intertoto cup). I'll give them one more season..
Jamsey8407
I think if there is ever a season to break into the top4 its now, Arsenal have a very young team, that will be much stronger next season, if Arsenal drop out of the top4 it will be now and it would only be for a year i think. As for Liverpool, any ones guess. It could even be Chelsea, new manager every year, but just cant see it.
young_jonah
Jamsey8407, Gabby is through and through. He wouldnt go anywhere. As for Young, he would be my bet to replace Ronaldo should he leave next summer.
young_jonah
Oh and of course I am going to be optimistic, great chairman, great manager, great fans and a great squad. Whats not to be optimistic about. Perhaps I should have put them 8th, thing is, i think they will finish 4th. Only time will tell.
young_jonah
Can't really call your chairman great after only 1/2 seasons and as for your 'squad' is it really great? Take a few injuries and who of what quality is waiting in the wings? I'm not saying Spurs' squad is perfect, especially with our lack of strikeforce at the moment, but the quality of our squad is far superior, especially across the midfield.
Jamsey8407
And how can you say that? Some of the midfield has never played in the premiership. We have Reo-Coker, Barry and Sidwell who are all proven in the premiership, Gardner who is a young talent and we have Young is one of the best wingers in the league, better than Lennon IMO. Routledge looks ok too, good back up player, as you will already know. I think the only part of the field you are superior is up front Berbatov is a pure class, but that said he may leave. And I do like Bent, glad to see he is doing well in pre-season. I would say you are far superior at all you may have a slightly better squad, but i think we have a better manager. And as for the chairman, what has he done to not be considered a great chairman, he has given the sponsorship away to a charity, he has redeveloped our training facitlities, re-opened the popular pub on the club's grounds, he has even developed the stadium and has told the manager he has money available to him. If thats not a great, not sure what is.
young_jonah
sorry jamesy, but Randy Lerner is great, actually, he's well beyond great, he's f~~king magnificent. when you support other teams, you may notice th players and the manager, but you only hear about the chairmen in the paper. we are villa fans and we know what randy has done here and he truly is magnificent. the reason you dont hear about him is because, unlike gillette/hicks, roman and thaksin is because randy lets the team do the talking and is quite happy to sit in the background and wave his magic wand for all the boys and girls who love the claret and blue. Up the Villa.
bobbyfett
Its like Levy, I cant comment, cause I really dont know anything about him. So I really dont know if Spurs fans like him or not. But at the end of the day Lerner makes a refreshing change from Ellis IMO.
young_jonah
How can you say Sidwell is proven in the premiership? One season in the top flight with Reading, was transfered to Chelsea where he played probably a total of 3 games due to not being good enough for their winning side and then was shipped to Villa. This season will be decider whether he can cut it. I agree that Young is better than Lennon but with the quality that Bentley, Dos Santos & Modric will bring, whoever plays upfront with Bent will be get chances. With regards the the chairman, it's too early to call him great. 'Greatness' comes with time and is determined by how many trophies are won, how far a club has come... Dave Whealen of Wigan is a great Chairman. Wigan through and through, has always given money to the manager and has brought the club from the lower leagues to the top flight... Your guy may be making some headway, but is not great just yet..
Jamsey8407
Oh and with regards to Agbonglahor being Villa through and through, two words for you - Sol Campbell! His head will be turned when the big boys come in with the dosh & the european nights!
Jamsey8407
Fair comment Jamesy, good luck for the new season, my old housemate was a spurs fan. So always like to see them do well, when we drew 4-4 last season I cried and he laughed, oh how we both laugh now!! Not. As I say good luck to Spurs, hope they have a decent season, just hope they finish behind us.
young_jonah
If Gabby didnt turn his back on us, think he would get 10x worse than Barry got. But I just cant see it. Lets hope we improve to match his ambitions.
young_jonah
Of course, nothing wrong with some opinionated banter.. Villa have definetly improved and have some good british youngsters which is good to see. You've always done well against us and the 4-4 last season was an epic battle which we did not deserve anything out of, but football is a funny old game. I wouldn't mind battling it out with the Villans for 4/5th spot!
Jamsey8407
sounds good jamsey. you can have 4th as i'm allergic to the number 5.
bobbyfett
got that wrong! i mean we'll have 4th! oh sod it!
bobbyfett
"Newcastle could still push for a top 6 place, maybe even 4th, if they are lucky!! 10th"... Covering all the angles there. And as for the gooners 6th. Mmmm, I agree lay off the funny fags. Still an interesting (in all senses of the word) read.
North Upper
Fair enough Young_Jonah... good luck for the season.
MikeyGamst
The only Villa players who would get into the Spurs team are Laursen if King is out, Barry & Young & that`s it. King, Woody, Bale, GIO, Berba & Bent would walk into your squad. And MON has won nothing so you cannot call him a great manager. Ramos and MON have spent big so need to get success in CL and Silverware but Spurs are actually break even in transfers this summer how much have Villa spent?
cockeril
I seem to remember similar banter with Spurs fans this time last year about how they were far better than Villa and were going to finish in the top 4...we all know what happened then don't we?
jonah
wow *****in hell. big debate here..... i'll just say spurs lose berbatov, not looking good from too many good strikers to just one mr bent... at the moment
krisvilla
Nice Article YJ and good point Jonah. We all know that Spuz can't defend and when ( note the when and not if) Ledley and Woodgate are injured, Dawson and whoever else steps in can't cut it atall. As for Modric and Gio, unproven and may take a year at least to get used to the Prem, same goes for your manager. Bale is still wet behind his ears like Gabby and Berba won't be there anyway. Agreed that Bent and Bentley would be good for us though. Good luck this year and hope that one of us beats Liverpool to 4th, but can't see Arsenal dropping out of it. Wenger has won the Prem and knows what it takes to win against all comers. Bent-eetezz can only manage in Europe and Liverpool are a cup team.
Villan444
if we sign milner which looks more likley we have a better chance of finishing 4th then maybe M. JOHNSON we could do with him would be a strong midfield then. Then we hav to look to a striker if we pull of a move for Santa-Cruz we could well be looking at a top 4 finish.. i hope anyway
ruddy
Santa Cruz would be about £15mil i reckon.
young_jonah
Villan444 Woody was injury free last season and Your right about Dawson we call him Cl amity Dawson for a reason. berba has as much chance as Barry as staying and Barry is pivotal to Villa. Bent will score more goals than Carew. If Berba goes we have Bent and GIO who still IMO and most are better than Carew and Maloney. We do concede too many goals and that is defo an area that Villa are much better than us. But we now have a good keeper and with a back four of Hutton, Woody, King & Bale we as good as any one in defence. But put Dawson in there we struggle but The Corluka transfer is not dead yet. I wonder if you would concede more if Barry left, I do think MON has bought very well in Sidwell but again he needs to prove it at a bigger club than Reading. I say stuff Pool and we will buy Barry for 15 million surely you would prefer to sell to us;o)
cockeril
Everyone forgot about Benni McCarthy then, still class just injured last season, would be ace for us boys! Cheap too probably. He will score alot for BB this season, mark my words. COCKERIL: Did spurs break even on tfers last season? Don't FINK so. Anyway, where's One AaronLEnnon gone? I miss the boy.
koolbill
We are actualy 1-2 million up on transfers this summer.
cockeril
Jamsey8407 - "I find it ironic that a Villa fan happens to think Villa will finish 4th" !!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!! .. In what way is that ironic? Surely that's as far away from irony as you can possibly get!?! :)
SchoolBoyError
It's about as ironic as Alannis Morisettes song lyrics to the song called Ironic!!! hahahhaha.
koolbill
i still think it will be a challenge to break the top 4, but i could definitely see us in the top 6, i gotta say im interested in how well Hull do this year... nah nevermind all i said villa top 4 and uefa cup winners ;) Up Da ViLLA!!!!!
revival4us
revival4us, thats the spirit!!! bring it on!!!
young_jonah
the North West teams are going to struggle this season!
leelindsay
You seem to have wound spud's fans up the most saying we will finish above them, i reckon 6th again and the uefa cup would be nice.
chris the villan
Spurs fans said they were gonna finish above last season too, so no change there.
young_jonah
I think we are gonna need a 20 a season man before we will have a chance of breaking in to the top 4.
chris the villan
I know its been said but i say it again Arsenal 6th .... are you mad ... Crueller a flop ... the guy was voted best Scottish player last season ... i thing him and Laursen will be the best defensive pairing in the leauge... i actually would predict Gabby as Villa's flop... i think the premiership boys are wise to him now... he has pace but lacks that final ball.... Kevin Nolan ... good shout.. pity he is up against Gerrard and Lampard for an England place... i really rate him.... Evertons playmaker and still their best player is surely Arteta.... Have to agree with Andy Johnson making an impact at Fulham ..... Hull 16th ... very ambitious - lol.....Mark Hughes surely has to be the choice for next Man U manager... although he has a tougher job at Man city this year than if he would of stayed at BB ... but i admire that he stepped out of his comfort zone..... Michael Owen has been written off that mant time .... i would still have him in the villa team with Joe Cole (hint hint MON)... i think Spurs will flop again and does it matter anyway because they will never be above the Arsenal ....As for the 2 ex Villa boys Carson and Moore ... give em a break guys ... i really hope they do well this season .... but i fear for Luke if he doesnt .... if not he will disapear into championship mediocrity.... Finally any one like Scott parker for the Villa ??? ..... Good shout jonah .... at least youve had the balls to put your neck on the line .... Up the Villa

Would love to see Hull survive, with Windass as league top scorer (58goals!) then running for Prime Minister! Arsenal over 30's-Almunia is 31 if GKs count. Matt Derbyshire is awesome, pederson is top class, but Ince is a bit o a tool, Blackburn mid table. Good luck to the baggies and stoke, though if WBA do well the Chiles man on MOTD2 will be insufferable!(2 good 2 bad is awesome - why was that woman so scared of harry redknapp??? 1:10-1:18ish HILARIOUS, cant stop chuckling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdSw0t8_3Fg)) Please return your thoughts on this clip!!!! Great article YJ and TVRwhitey Scott Parker is quality, always liked the player - not to be mixed up with the one at me school!

And seriously, you haven't lived without that clip!!

Cheers guys, thanks for all the compliments, i reckon this is going to be the best season in a long while, and i am positive there are gonna be surprises, maybe Hull, maybe Stoke, maybe as I have predicted Arsenal's kids WILL crack under the pressure of having little experience, who knows, come May we all will.......

Really think that we can finish in the top 6 this season and think we could turn a couple of the top 4 over at home.We will need to be lucky with injuries and suspensions but feel this could be our best season for years.A decent cup run is a must this season as our cup record in recent years is poor.Cant see liverpoo having a manager for much longer as the sweaty spanish waiter looks like he will walk soon, as his board have no faith in him.Unless we have a striker who gets us 20+ a season champions league football may be a big ask,but theres no denying were moving in the rite direction. Mr A Villa
Pompey didn't impress me in the Charity Shield, while Everton looked lacking yesterday against Blackburn. Spurs despite the opening day defeat will come good, while I expect better this year from Newcastle. Manchester City, once Hughes gets their act together will be top eight material, and I expect the supposed 'Big Four' to remain intact, maybe Liverpool and Arsenal swopping places.

Good call about Matt Derbyshire young_jonah, I've often thought that we could do worse than bring him to beautiful Brummagem B6.

Deco scored a screamer apparently. Theres one prediction that looks to be blown out the water already.

A good read....www.villatalk.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=3900

Ironic that you mentioned Carlos Cueller and i mention Gabbi ... as our season potential flops - lol..... after the performance against Man City ... its to be hope that Carlos gets in the team quickly and forges a good partnership with Laursen (interesting see that it wasnt Davis who came out saying we need to tighten up defensively - an article im yet to read) i'm just hoping that Gabbis goals arent cancelled out by our defence this season
tvrwhitey
mind you 4-2 is better than the 4-4's of last season .... and very entertaining if not nervously
tvrwhitey
just wanted to say well done Gabbi .... its nice to be proven wrong

Good artical YJ. I hope the good people of Hull still love ya.
col8
Col8, I reckon Hull have the strongest side of the three promoted. Just my opinion and with a full season ahead of us, who knows what will happen. But I tell you something, George Boateng is a big signing for them, and Geovanni could be also.
young_jonah
Whats the betting when the going gets tough Boateng will be spending more and more time on the Physios couch.

Really quality article even if you struggle to agree with some or all of it. Think Villa 4th is tongue in cheek though but the top 4 will be broken up very soon.
