'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cuellar To Boost International Prospects

Carlos Cuellar, who was the SPL player of the year last season, signed on the dotted earlier early today, and insisted moving the Villa could get him in the Spanish squad.

The former Rangers defender penned a 4 year contract, with the fee believed to be around £7.8 million (or whatever the conversation from 10 million Euros is)and has become Martin O'Neill 6th new signing this summer.

Speaking on the official site, after confirming his signature, Cuellar said:

'I'm joining a big club in the Premier League. This is the best league in the world and last year Villa did very well. They play very good football and had a fantastic season. I watched Villa last season and Martin O'Neill is a very good coach. He plays exciting attacking football and I am excited to be here." Adding 'I follow Premier League football because at this moment I think it is the best league in the world, so it is good to play my football here.

'The football here is very offensive and the most honest in Europe. Players here are strong and it is a very difficult league.

'My ambition is to play for my country and I think with Aston Villa I will have that possibility. Every player wants to play international football and that is my aim.'

Cuellar won't be able to play against FH Hafnarfjordur on Thursday in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round clash but could make his debut against Manchester City on Sunday.

Get in!!!!!!! what a signing, this guy is pure quality and a steal at 7.8m! UTV

Have you all seen how Brad Guzan has preformed in the Olympics? You have a great talent on your hands and you got him dirt cheap. He has the ablitity to be the best American GK. And thats over a lot of talented players ex. Howard, Keller, Friedel, and Hannaman.
gunnerkid107
ha, looks like a top signing. Hopefully will get the interview back from the Rangers ed soon.
The Fear
hope os gunnerkid, could well be a steal at that price!
The Fear
i just read it on the official site where he says it will be nice to win a trophy with aston villa, they have spelt villa wrong and put "ville" well done to whoever runs the site.
Danzel
I've never seen Cueller play, but hope he turns better than Boumsong did at Newcastle. Having said that, even Celtic fans I spoke to rate him, so he must have something about him, and he's quite ugly, in the mould of Villa defensive greats Mountfield and Southgate.
keithlees1978
Great signing...MON really is building from the back. Wonder if he'll start ahead over Curtis? Joey Cole and Ashton next please, and we're good to go...
olafthegreat
Is he the first Spainish player to play for us? I cant remember another or am I being stupid?????
erv2005
I particularly like this quote "'The football here is very offensive and the most HONEST in Europe. Players here are strong and it is a very difficult league. " He will fit in well here being both honest, good and a bunch of lads
DO'L
well there was only 1 spaniard to play for villa - the mighty stan sanchez staunton. bienvenida Carlos! enhorabuena.
ric112
Top signing for Villa quality defender should get a chance in the spanish squad now he's in the premiership. Good luck big Carlos!
GregE1873
Good stuff, shouldn't be conceding so many this season eh?
NorthcliffeBandit
nope
GregE1873
Don't think he's had much of a pre season. We may wait a while for him to get up to speed.
AMS78
Never took any notice of him and only 'know' what is being reported. If he is as good as people are saying it should mean we have 4 good centre halfs. This means cover for injuries and suspensions but perhaps most importantly it means we can rest Laursen on a regulr basis. He is our best centre back and like Mcgrath will need his knees to be rested as much as posibble. Now go and get Santa Cruz. Blackburn are in turmoil, and ManCiteh who are also interested, do not even know if they will have a manager in a few days. As we have done with Cuellar, now is the time to strike whilst a club is at its weakest. Harsh I know, but the Premier League is a case of victim and prey.
voiceoftheholte
You have got an immense player there. i live in Scotland and he saved Rangers so many times last season. bargain.
wafcmaz
Outstanding player and a bargain at just under £8million although i can't hide my disgust at him leaving but i understand his reasons for leaving and wish all the best to him and Villa for the coming season, I can see u lot breaking into the top 4
gers1872
Baragins not the word more like a gift we could easily have got 10 to 12million for him but you cant do anything about buy out clauses I'm afraid. Anyway good luck to Carlos and Villa in the upcoming season.
GregE1873
If this guy is as good as everyone is saying, it shouldn't be overly long before Spain come calling for him - especially if he keeps Torres in his pocket later this month.
Mayo_12
He's 6 foot 3 with curly hair, his teeth are *****ed but we don't care! Carlosss Cueeeeeeyar
los_angeles_villan
That defence of ours, so often our weak spot last season, is now starting to have a pretty solid look about it. bodes well for the campaign ahead.
glensider
Can imagine that its a huge blow to the Rangers supporters, and in a way its a shame that they haven't collected the fee that perhaps his qualities justified. Definitely seems as if we've got ourselves a top quality signing at a bargain price. Pity it doesn't always work that way.
glensider
Well said glensider mate, you know what you are talking about it's good to hear comments by decent fans like yourself especially when it concerns my team Rangers. Cheers mate.
