O'Neill Admits He Might Play Gareth Barry

Good grief, it really is a slow news day, not even any decent press links! The papers are full of the reports from over the weekend that Villa are set to make an audacious bid for Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole.

Other than that, the only other snippet is Martin O'Neill admitting that he might well bring the Gareth Barry saga to an end by using him in the Uefa Cup game this Thursday.

Obviously if Barry does play in the UEFA Cup qualifier against FH Hafnarfjordur he will then be cup tied and unable to feature for Liverpool or any other club for that matter in the Champions League.

The Villa manager told the official site: 'He's our player and though things could change, if Gareth is still our player on Wednesday morning, he's as good a chance of climbing on the bus as anybody.'

We pay his wages so he plays. Simple as.
Villan444
Quite right 444

If he plays, I reckon that's the end of this sorry saga! Well at least until Jan anyway! Lets hope we have signed some quality and are above Liverpool in the league by then!
In MON we trust!
anyone notice that the No.8 & No.12 shirts are not filled? is this a clue?
KSarge1
damn right, play him MON!!
romanianvillain
MON is great, I think the way he has handled the whole saga has been brilliant. I hope GB plays & stays.
Mutley73
He is available and should be selected. The only time it will become an issue is if he refuses to play. If that is the case we simply withold his wages. Unfortunately if you and I did that we would be sacked but in the day and age of the overpayed and spoilt modern footballer, this is not a viable option.
voiceoftheholte
bring him on for 30 seconds at the end of the game, just to rub it in benitez's face!
ric112
I noticed number 8 on being filled and wondered the same...another midfielder is on the cards surely...especially with the current rumours going round.
Villa4Europe
liverpool have effectively said they don't rate him , because they wont stump the cash up for him , he is still under contract and if required to play , he has to play ! If he refuses to play though we are in a tough tough situation , his value plummets and he would be flogged off by martin as quick as you like and we would be the only losers.
nick1
I`m sure he could play and still be eligible to play in CL for Liverpool at a later stage, but he indeed should play for us as we pay his frigging wages - if he refuses then you dock him the max.
ASPINALL
For GODS SAKE PLEASE PLAY HIM O'Neill. Nobody at Liverpool wants him. Just play him and end this saga. The only 2 people in the world who want this move are Barry and Rafa and its becoming ridculously boring and tiresome.
trader
if he plays it should be a sign that he's here till Jan. MON won't play him unless he's talked it through with GB and that he's agreed, knowing there will be no transfer this window. then we'll just have to see if he signs a new contract. If he doesn't then I think it'll be finally goodbye GB in January. For a lower price, but maybe MON will put that to GB. If our progress isn't good enough by Xmas he can go to the scouse for a lower price. Maybe? Lets just wait and see. Hope he plays though.
tonybrum
I am 100% sure that MON will discuss the options with GB beforehand to gauge where GB's mind is. If GB tells MON he's up for the game, in the right frame of mind, etc., then MON will play him -- UNLESS he knows something more about a possible transfer by then. If GB's mind is not right, then I really doubt MON will risk playing him just to make life difficult for LFC. I think he has his head screwed on tighter than that ...
BobTheBuilder
PLAY HIM it boring talking about it now. We as a club need to move on and concentrate on UEFA cup glory and adding really good quality players and make Barry think twice about leaving us for Liverpool
pksandell
i realy hope we do get cole would be our best bit of buisness apart from the friedel deal this summer. would also be good if barry stayed he then has the challenge of becoming the legend we all want him to be
ruddy
carlos cuellar fee agreed didnt expect that today
ruddy
Liverpool say that the asking price for Gareth Barry is too HIGH. haha. And Rafa thinks the asking prices for the players we wanted were just right. Shut up Rafa. Oh and Liverpool are now expecting us to drop our asking price. Why should we, when you would not drop yours. LIVERPOOL ARE SUCH A CHEAP CLUB.
villa for ever
The whole Barry saga is already over in my opinion, Rafa and Liverfool have pretty much conceided defeat already. Barry will play Thursday.
Mayo_12
he's a Villa player, one of our best, and he should play every game he's fit!!! Plus it would probably end the whole sorry on-off transfer saga. Barry is going nowhere!!!
romanianvillain
He has to play on Thursday. We're paying him damn good money, he's a quality player, and we're a better team with him in there.
glensider
MON wont for one minute consider the implications of playing Barry. If the player himself is in the right frame of mind, which he ought to be, then GB should very definitely start.
glensider
I aint bothered but Oneil should ask Barry if wants to play, if he says yes play him, if he says no dont. But what Oneil should do if he says no is stick him on the bench at the start of the season and make him play for the reserves. At the end of the day with Barry been Liverpools number 1 target they have proper shxt on him, and the way they have carried on it was obvious Liverpool didnt want him as much as he wanted Liverpool. He needs to get his head together and pledge his future to Villa, as theres no way Liverpool are going to get him they havent got any money. It makes you laugh when their chairman turns round and says we will give you 18 million for SILVA but not for Barry, its because they knew Silva wouldnt come.
billy bob
Good comments billy bob. At the end of the day you're right, Barry has to be 100% up for it, but seeing as we're paying the guy damn good money to do nothing, he really needs to get his mind sorted, and quickly.
