Sunday's Villa Press Talk Including Joe Cole Bid?

Press talk today suggests we are after Chelsea winger Joe Cole. Apparently Phil Scolari is looking to sign Robinho, that alongside the arrival of Deco could well put the England international out in the cold and the papers are saying that MON would be willing to stump up the £10million (others apparently say £16m) needed to attract Cole, who has just two years left on his contract.

The Sunday Mercury are linking Villa with Rangers 26-year-old defender Carlos Cuellar after the Scottish giants early European exit.

Also in the Mercury is a link to £2.5million rated Czech midfielder Jaroslav Plasil who currently plays for Spanish club Osasuna. Fulham are also apparently interested.

The rest of the talk is about Barry and we've covered that in a separate article!

Joe Cole? Hmmm, yes please. Then a striker if you would be so kind and then watch the season take off!

Tez what about Johnson, Cole, Santa Cruz... Let's keep the English flow going eh, i would say Defoe instead of Santa Cruz but MON buggered that up in Jan.

Yea I would take Johnson as well he did us in last season and is a exciting prospect. I am not too bothered whether we keep buying young english talent I would hate it to put off other foriegn players or even claims of MON being racist lol?! Agree with thirtyone though Cole would be on a massive salary and is a London boy would he take a drop as Sidders has? I am not so sure.

Some nice links today, eh guys? I see it unlikely that we'd bid for Joe Cole though, for the wage issue already mentioned. However nice and exciting it would be to see him at VP I just don't see it happening. Cuellar is a bit more realistic, and that would make for some interesting competition at centre-back, we'd have three top quality players there in Davies, Laursen and the addition of Cuellar. Oh, and three and a half quality players, sorry, I forgot Knight.

Can't see the cole rumour being true. It's only since we signed a few players that we're being linked with anyone that someone with the remotest imagination can conjur up. He'd be too expensive and provide too little impact.

Cannot believe for a second that MON is in for Joe Cole. He may be a good player but he's not MON's type of player and he sure wouldn't fit into the wage structure at VP. IN the Sunday Times Joe Lovejoy does his pre-season stuff on all the Premier League teams; the Villa write-up is particularly snarky, ill-informed and ignorant. Anyone else seen it? I knew Lovejoy was a prat but until today I didn't realise he was in the pocket (or up the arse) of the Big Four as much as he seems to be. Won't be listening to him again; *****.

THink some would have said the same about Ashley Young at one point AllanW? MON has got to adapt to his new position at a big PL club and I'm sure he will do. That would mean big name players surely?

10/08/2008 12:14:00

Well Fear I don't think the comparison holds up; we all knew MON was looking for wingers when we signed Young so it was no surprise. Are we looking for someone to play 'in the hole' right now? I don't htink so with the way MON has us playing. The wages are a major difference; Young is NOT the highest paid at the club and didn't become the highest when he signed. Cole would bust our top salary by a long way which would create all sorts of tensions within the squad. Plus it would put pressure on MON to play Cole as much as possible to justify the investment. I don't think it's anything more than speculative moonshine, myself :)

If we're serious about signing real quality from some of our competitors, then at some point MON is going to have to deal with the whole wage structure thing....if we really want to progress then Gareth Barry should not forever be our top paid player......

Would love to see Joe Cole at the villa but cant really see it happening. He is 26 coming to the peak of his career and will want to play champions league football but at least it shows we are moving in the rite direction being linked with players like him.I think SWP would be a more realistic target and wouldn't upset the wage structure.Bullard and Nolan would be good additions too.

on a different note it looks like pompey have been lucky enough to beat us to the signing of kaboul :) thank god for that, centre half is a place where errors are punished.pompey now have kaboul and sol (my boots have lead soles) campbell. personally i think they'll struggle to make top half this season. specially playin route 1 upto crouchy al the time!

Mr Villa, Nolan and Bullard are good choices, should be purchaseable for relatively little, i've often commented on how Nolan is far and away Boltons best player. Regarding Joe Cole; he strikes me as the type of player who might want regular football over high wages (i know, somthing of a rarity in this age) and may be prepared to take a wage cut. If so he would be a bargain at £10m.

Also the Times predicted us 7th and Pompey 6th next season! I suspect not, given thier poor performance today...Furthermore, Everton are having a troubled pre-season to say the least, Blackburn have got a tool in charge (i saw him managing MK Dons last season from the kop at Bradford City and his behavior was embarassing) who sells thier best players (Friedal, Bentley, RSC?), whilst Man City's chairman has had his assets frozen and fails to deliver on his promises. Thier problems are worse than ours (thanks to the new full-backs)!!! Only us and Spurs to challenge for 5th hopefully, and spurs have a lot of ground to make up on last season!

I hate to say it but at the tail end of last season Spuds looked quite impressive. I'm hoping that the wholesale changes and the unproven players (in the prem) will mean a lack of cohesion this time around and by the time they get it together it will be too late for them as it was last season.

Spurs have looked real impressive in pre-season. I think last season was a blip for them and we'll do well to keep up with them. IF we brought in a quality striker, center back and right winger I could see that battle for 5th being real tasty. (maybe even 4th...depends on which scouse team turns out this season)

I like Joe, but I cant imagine MON breaking the bank for him. I still think he would more likely go for the younger and more mouldable SWP. There is no smoke without fire, but there has never been any indication that Cole is a player that MON is overly keen on. Personally I would prefer Ashley Young any day, and I think that either SWP or Aaron Lennon, or my favourite choice, "Marko Marin" from Mönchengladbach would fit in better to our dressing room, be more mouldable by MON and most importantly, be willing to come to us and stay with us!

Joe Cole would be great. He is great and yet still very underestimated. Can you imagine trying to defend both him and Ashley Young? Still, I can't believe Chelsea would let him go. He was in my opinion their best player last year.

11/08/2008 15:16:00

Why do people thing Cole would play on the left or right? He's best position is centre mid/behind the front 2, creating and scoring goals. If we keep Barry, I can see MON moving him to the left, young to the right and having Reo or Sidwell with Cole or De Le red. Perfect mix. Nothing worse than a winder having to get back on their favoured foot before crossing/shooting.
In MON we trust!
