Sidwell Looking To Return Soon & Friedel Focussed
Steve Sidwell is pushing to overcome his calf strain in time for this Thursdays trip to Iceland to face FH Hafnarfjordur in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.
Sidwell picked up the strain before the friendly v Reading last weekend but the midfielder things he is in with a chance of returning telling the official site:
'I'm getting there. Obviously I've got to take it slowly. I don't want to rush back and then crash down again. So it's important to keep it steady. I'm not the most patient of people and I'm trying to push it as quickly as I can. But I've got to be realistic and make sure I don't break down again.'
He also says this is an important part of the season with the opening game so close so he doesn't want to rush back and make the injury worse.
Meanwhile another new recruit, Brad Friedel also has his focus firmly on the trip to play 'Ican'tspellorpronouncetheirname'
'I was at the Odense game and it was tremendous to see 31,000 people turn up for an Intertoto Cup tie. I was thankful for the reception that I got at half-time. The boys did well to get through into the UEFA Cup because I know they worked really hard all through last season to finish sixth. Sixth would generally get you into the UEFA Cup automatically but this year Villa had to enter the Intertoto Cup and it would have been a shame to have been knocked out in the first round. But the players did really well and now we can hopefully look forward to a decent European campaign.'
