Is MON a Chess Player?

Is MON a Chess Player?

Looking at the latest bits and pieces of news dribbling through the press, a couple of thoughts hit me.

Thought Number 1 - Steve Gibson coming out and saying we've paid GBP 6m for Luke Young, only 1 year after we could have had him for GBP 2.5m. My thought was 'are we getting desperate'?

It would certainly appear so at first glance - if we wanted him, why didn't we take him last year? His comments seem to have indicated that we would have been his first choice. The only logical answer is that he wasn't first choice.

Thought Number 2 - If he's not our first choice, why get him now? Again, obvious answer is we're only just over a week away from the start of the season, and it really wouldn't be acceptable starting our 2nd season without a recognised RB.

But is there another reason? An article in the Mirror today stated Liverpool were struggling big time to raise the cash for the Barry transfer, and 'He (Rafa) is hoping Villa will agree a deal to take Steve Finnan in part-exchange for Barry, meaning he will need to raise around 6.5m from the sale of players.'

So is this MON's attempt to back the Spanish waiter into a corner - remove our need for Finnan, and hence make the only acceptable bid a 100% cash bid only....knowing that Liverpool can't come up with the reddies? Only a thought, but it would certainly be an interesting move......checkmate Rafa?

Good point Yatesy, MON is far more intelligent than Rafa and his American clowns and is definitely playing some games somewhere along the line with this saga. Wouldn't like to play chess against MON though, he would take at least an hour deliberating on each move.

Havent got a clue why we didnt sign him last season, its completly baffled me! Apparantly we only signed Shorey aswell because Sidwell bugged MON to buy him!
son_of_cher
i would never have thought... about that nice one(Y)

Interesting point, 6m though is a heavy price to pay for a 29 year old who is valued about 3m, then again we need him and he was Boro's best player last season and he has plenty of experience which is what we need for Europe and he can give experience to Davies/Herd etc etc, We still need another Centre half and Fredinand is too expensive, 4m Kaboul will be alright, Thing is will Barry be as good this season if he stays, i know he is professional and if he did well for us then Liverpool would be interested again, if he did ***** for us then Liverpool wouldn't be interested but his value would go down and it's like sticking two fingers at MON.

Surely Sidwell can bug MON to get SWP in???????
erv2005
yh sidwell could be the key to quite a few signings shorey obviously has played with him before and swp to
ruddy
interesting look on things there mate

That IS an interesting take on the developments. It just adds to my already high opinion of MON. I think he has dealt with all of this brilliantly & it will be quite gratifying if somehow Barry stays & Villa are able to trump Liverstool during the coming Prem campaign.
soonerfan61
Soonerfan61 i think Barry will have the passion missing to his game next season, i could be wrong but i'd be pretty annoyed if MON tried everything he can to sgtop me leaving.

IF (big if). If we did trump them in the league for that 4th spot, it would cost them a lot more than 18 million. I got my conspiracy head on again. I got the impression from the start that Liverpool were not after Barry to improve their team, but to cripple a threat that was emerging (Villa). They could have bought him ages ago if they wanted to. Now that the push is coming to the shove, they don't seem sure whether they actually want him.

I had the same thought, especially once I heard how much he paid for Young.
Nigel-not-Reo
Food for thought.....cracking post

Young is a better acquisition than Finnan so that argument is flawed. We may find that in a short time Young may be number 2 to someone else. Would that be interesting?
villacross
Very interesting, my thoughts were along similar lines. Will be interesting to see how this pans out

Mon always makes me think of, how Cloughie would do things if he was in management today....

MON never wanted Finnan. and he looks like a chess player!

All I know is, MON is a whole lot smarter than most of us (Rafa included). I wouldn't put it past him.

Hehehe good article. Looks like MON has put the bin dippers into check!
DoLpHiNaToR
ita a clever thought but hardley realistic, MON dont want Barry to go and he wants 18m if he does and thats the bottom line, why would he sped 6m to make sure he gets 18m that basicly means he values Barry at 12m not 18m and Barry would have been well gone by now.
Astonian Villan
Astonian Villan - that's not quite my point.....i'm saying that just maybe MON is spending over the odds on Young to maybe increase the chances that we DON'T end up selling Barry. Agree it's probably a bit of a stretch, but i'd love it if it was true.... Good picture Fear - he does look like a bit of a player doesn't he?
YatesyVillain
It might be that MON was not 100% sure about Luke Young and made his mind up after seeing him have such a good season at Boro
Nimmo
Whatever the reasoning behind the signing of Luke Young, whatever the reason why we didn't sign him last summer or earlier in this window, I neither know, nor could really care less about. We've brought in one of the better specialist right full backs out there, someone who I believe will become a very firm Villa Park favourite, and someone who I expect to see do an excellent job for us.
glensider
Having said that. If our signing of Luke has in any way niggled or upset Mr Benitez, who was hoping to push his reject Finnan off on us, then that very thought will certainly help me sleep a little better at night. Glad that we still haven't got Luke Moore ot the books. What with Ashley Young, Luke Young, and Luke Moore, the name game would have become confusing.
