Stig, I thought Sky Sports News said that Kaboul had rejected both Sunderland and Aston Villa to sign for Portsmouth. Is that not the case now.
I would certainly have Ashton, Milner and De La Red though. De La Red will be tough to get.

Not that I mind... a fullback's a fullback and a true right back is truer than what we had before...but Shorey and Young smack as leftovers. Again, I think they are good, decent players...glad to have them...but they obviously aren't MON's first choice. If they were, they would have been bought 2 months ago.
I like the idea that MON is building a young, English team...slowly. I also think the Barry Saga threw a pretty big monkey-wrench in the so-called "5-year plan". I think "the plan" called for buying a young, English RW this last year, only for SWP and Bentley to choose London over Brum. Millner is still a possibility. He's good enough for Villa, but not necesarily talented enough to grow into a world-class player. I haven't a clue who the first choice RB was since we have been linked to every RB there is and a few fictitious RB's as well. I think MON wanted to buy Sidwell last summer to pair with Barry (Barry playing more of a holding role, Sid adding more offence behind Carew), but didn't get it done til now. I think MON is still looking for a creative midfielder...the guy to unlock those defences determined not to let Gabby and A. Young behind them. De la Red, though, seems a stretch.
Honestly, we scored a lot of goals last year with very defensive minded fullbacks. We were also very porous on defense, especially after Davies got hurt. Friedel is probably the best business done this summer. Probably some of the best business done in all the PL. 2.5M for a keeper that earns points. Even if he only plays for a year, that's the same amount of money we paid to borrow Carson for a year. It may not be the long-term solution MON had in mind when he loaned Carson, but it should pay some dividends. And now that I have completely lost track of why I started this post...at any rate enjoy my random thoughts.

Villa at the moment aren't good enough to be able to actually get their first choice targets, very few teams are, but to me if these two full backs sign I for one will be whole lot happier.....Friedel..... Young..... Laursen.....Davies.....Shorey.....Thats a good enough back five for many teams.

Mutley73, as we all know the shorey signing was as a result of the bouma injury, so that was not really planned. the young transfer was not one of oneills main targets, i think young will be a stop gap solution, not a bad one at that.

I think it's very shrewd to bring him to the same club as Sidwell. It can only help to bring the best out in players being surrounded by people who make them feel comfortable. He'll be a good signing for us.

I appreciate the buy british approach we seem to have adopted, though I do think in the future when it comes to a time where we need to attract top foreign players, the lack of mix in the side may be a burden. Am I alone in being slightly concerned we're buying 2 full backs relegated in leaky defences in the last 2 years.

I think Villa have made some really common sense signings.Shorey,Friedel and Sidwell all for around 10 mil is great business.Ashton would be a wonderful signing but Wham will never let him go.

im happy that we have shorey - a cut above the reading team + has international experience! same with young if it goes ahead. One of boros most consistent players last year and he knows how to strike a ball! just need a CB now and thats the defense covered!

you can ask that about any transfer that ever happens in all of football chris the villan - doesn't mean anything is wrong with the guy! Boro probably would like to raise funds and feel they can get someone adequate for cheaper and will use the profit to strengthen other areas of their team that is lacking (scoring goals).

Correct me if i'm wrong, but has MON signed two players in a day whilst not even being in the same country? If so bravo...the rumours spread around today are suggesting a REALLY exciting signing to go with the two VERY necessary ones. If MON can do that for midfield to replace Baz, and then one more average player for either the right wing or up front then i'd be a HELL of a lot more comfortable about this season. Today was very important in calming us down, it shows that he can get his finger out, even if he's waited as long as humanly possible to do so.

All we need now is a striker and I would take bent or Ashton with Bent being the number one choice, but Ashton is younger and is going to be very good. Plus Milner and another midfielder of creative ability....We have no chance of Santa Cruz as his brother Julio has just singed for Blackburn...So please to have two fullbacks...really does retain our dignity now. Let's push on from her and get a few more in.....I'm actually salivating!!!!!

I reckon Milner and Elano would sort the MF but would the clubs part with them...? Downing could be tempted now guys, let Young switch to the natural right sided player he is and allow him to ping a cross in rather than checking back EVERY time...or MGP....he would come to Villa in a heatbeat. Then Ashton or Bent! Ashton signed a new deal with the Hammers a few weeks ago sp Idoubt he is going anywhere but given how poor a manager Curbs is - anything is possible.

Reports are saying this morning that Aston Villa are on the verge of signing Kaboul from Tottenham, as Portsmouth conceded defeat in signing him due to lack of funds available to Harry, and also he has rejected Sunderland. There might even be breaking news on Sky Sports News tomorrow that he will have his medical.
This is not from a report but i also think Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of James Milner. I don't think Martin O'Neil has ever dropped his interest in signing him since his recall back in Martin's first season. I would not be surprised if there is news on him probably starting next week.

I fell much more optimistic now we have 2 fullbacks, we have a long way to go so bring on the next few! It has been reported Kaboul may be having a medical today, I would take him then we have options in Defence which is a novelty. I still think another R/L back possibly one who can play both would be nice. With Davies, Laursen, Knight, Kaboul, Shorey, Young, O'Halloran and possibly one more there will be competition for places. Do we think thats enough quality AND quantity?

Cruz - no chance with his brother just arriving at Blackburn....Ashton has recently signed a 5 year deal with the Hammers...Bent will be the only striker left at Tottenham...really don't know where we are going to get a striker but would love any of the guys above. Anyway, midfielder wise it would be nice to punt for MGP, M Petrov or Elano, and Milner and as I've said before we should really be taking a long term stance and buying Giles Barnes, once recovered from injury...perhaps a January window buy? What about a two year deal for Benni McCarthy? Worth a shout at 5m?

Would love to see James Milner arriving at B6, but somehow I just cant see Keegan allowing him to leave. Another striker please Mart, that has to be a priority. Oh, and Seb Larsson from our good friends and neighbours across the way. As for a striker, Spurs wont part with Bent, nor West Ham with Aston. We'll have to look elsewhere.

the striker need is an interesting one HE1969. at one stage MON was apparently looking at swede Marcus Rosenberg of Werder Bremen. there is also the guy from Seville - is it Fabiano? he was on fire last season and was linked to us via a spanish site recently.

I honestly think that we've had a bid accepted for Kaboul, and we've told him that he'd be a squad player or pushing for first team, whereas 'Arry has told him he'd be first team, hence why the guy wants to go to Pompey. He doesn't seem like the type to want to graft for a first team place. Just shows the difference in ambition if we're prepared to pay more for a squad player than Pompey can for a first teamer.

A few people have mentioned Seb Larsson I watched him today for the bluenoses, he didn't show me anything that was special or even anything that was average. All these names are interesting but MON isn't one for superstars. Roque Santa Cruz would be a great signing though.

The Birmingham Mail Newspaper says that Martin O'Neil is eying up Manchester City midfielder Micheal Johnson AND Chelsea's SWP.
The same paper also says we are on the verge of signing Kaboul from Tottenham for 6 Million.

villacross - i think yr right. the overseas players would round off the balance that MON seems to be creating. exposing the young english talent to different schools of footballing seems like a great idea to me. there is a few being linked - santa cruz, de la red, miguel, fabiano, etc.... leftfoot, i agree. As a true Villa fan I will forgive GB for his lack of faith and his blood red nose, although if he takes a closer look it is indeed claret and not red! The Reds' Chief Executive Rick Parry yesterday released the following statement:-
"There has been a lot of comment today regarding our position with regards to Gareth Barry.
"This is not about questioning the Manager's judgement or the ability of a particular player. The owners have clearly demonstrated throughout the year they are willing to back Rafa in the transfer market and will continue to do so.

Nice to see fat ass Parry sticking his oar in again. MON has been nothing more than fair to Barry. Barry should put in a transfer request if he wants to go that much. MON has dealt with this situation brilliantly. Barry is an ********* and has dug himself into a huge hole thanks to his Mate Gerrard. Scousers have no funds to purchase and thats that! I would still play him in our side though and get us into UEFA cup proper first!

Great news to come back to from holiday - we have a defence. Shorey is a quality player and Luke Young was named 'Mr.Consistent' by Boro fans so great news there. Lets crack on with some top top quality signings that really set the pulse racing. Joe Cole, Santa Cruz and De La Red all been linked - don't see why we can't prize Santa Cruz away from Blackburn he'll want European football. Heard his brother signed there at Blackburn - if that proves a problem get him over too ! De La Red situation surely helped by VDV signing for Real so who knows - I'm sure MON has something special up that rolled-up tracksuit top sleeve of his. UTV

Kaboul is going to Portsmouth. Harry said that they had no more money to spend, which i believed when they could not afford Kaboul and Shorey. And now they are about to sign Kaboul who could cost 6 Million. How did they suddenly have that money available, and that is without even selling a player. J'sus! I must go away more often, how things change in a week! Two decent signings, the mood in the camp has changed significantly and the quality of players linked has gone through the roof. Come on MON/RL keep it up, please make a couple of BIG signings - RSC or JC would be perfect, both would be unbelievable! Hi all, first post on this great site. Has anyone heard anything more on the De La Red rumour looks to be a great prospect and would love to see a player of his calibre at the villa, along with milner, santa cruz and nedum onuoha i think wed be in good shape for an attack on 4th spot

JM3112 - What a terrible problem to have! UTV! But that would cost another £20M? With RSC up front total cost would be near £35M. How much would we earn from being in the Champions League (group stage?) Would it be worth it financially? Because, if the potential income generated was anything close to £35M then I reckon we could do it (with those players) and the best part... at the expense of the scousers!

I think we should try and get Hoyte (1 year) and Silvestre (6 months. Until Wilf is back) on loan. Both clubs are not that keen to sell but they may agree to a loan. These 2 would be perfect cover for our needs. Hoyte can be back up to Young and Silvestre can be cover for Shorey and can also play centre back. Add Cole/De Le Red and Dean Ashton/RSC to that and we'll be laughing!! Starting 11 of Fridel, Young, Laursen, Davies, Shorey, Young, Reo, Cole/De Le Red, Barry, Gabby and Ashton/RSC!

Great news and just reinforces that O'Neill only pulls out of the running for players if he knows he can get a better one. I for one asked why we didnt go for Kaboul and Chimbonda seriously - but O'Neill must have had Young and Cuellar as his first choices and did not make the move. Thinking a little further - he didnt make a major effort for Malbranque......who is he going for now then - De La Red??? A great last few days for Villa - the board must be congratulated - we scored loads last year and Friedel, Shorey, Cuellar and Young - as well as the defensive qualities of Sidwell will help us concede less. Excellent!!!

S**t me MON has had a stroke or something...either that or he's just realised Randy wasn't joking when he said "here's my cheque book". This is good, because the players we're seeing aren't necessarily huge signings, but they are very solid quality and unspectacular work horses who are there for the team. It seems very shrewd to me. I actually think Routledge is destined for the right wing, because surely we can't hope to sign a quality striker AND a quality right winger. I think the striker need is greater than the wing at the moment, purely because of the system i think MON is going to set up with. I'm very intrigued now that he's woken from his transfer slumber.

I admit i was seriously papping my pants a week ago but Cueller is the best signing in the transfer window so far. Quality. All encouraging stuff, but it can't stop there we need more players 2-3 will do me and MON says hes still searching for more...

I thought about this in the week and have come to the conclusion villa might be delibertaley throwing names to the press to keep them away from there real targets, bits of disinformation to get other clubs in a fluster ie look at liverpool flapping with their interest in cole. The more I think about Smith, the better it feels. To be fair to the lad he has been played out of position IMO and is a much better player up front. He fits into MON's agressive, never say die attitude and will be good cover for gabby and Carew. Not sure he's the 20 goal a season man we're missing though but won't be a risk at 4 mill. Maybe we'll go for a Ashton etc next year?

You know what I like most about this summer's transfers...they are all starter-quality signings. MON now has some real depth. There may be some tough decisions to make, but at least he has some choices now: Bouma or Shorey, Cuellar and/or Laursen and/or Davies, etc. The midfield is interesting right now. As I see it, we have A. Young on the left (and sometimes floating), Barry at LCM (my guess is in more of a holding role), Sidwell at RCM (more in attack as he likes to shoot the ball), and a big gaping hole at RW.

Gaping hole at RW? Routledge has been in very good form matey. Salifou and Maloney can both switch over and so can Young. We have the nucleus of a very good midfield now, just add another quality midfield player with a Striker and we're cooking on gas! It's gonna be a Cuellar and Laursen defence too, once he gets used to out team, till then it'll be Knight and Laursen, with Davies covering and fighting Cuellar and Laursen for central defence. cuellar is probably going to be our fittest player at the moment too, regardless of a phantom calf strain. I can't wait to see Sidwell and NRC together, they both want to attack and can defend admirably, with Sidwell having a much better range of passing. Got to get another striker though - just to freshen things up as at present we're sooooo predicatable with Gab and Carew. I truly believe deals are going to be done right upto the last hour of the transfer window on this one pals. I even predict us snatching a QUALITY Liverpool player and lowering our asking price....my money would be one either Benayoun or Babel (I wish) and 12m for Barry at the last second. Babel would be absolute quality! A proper skillful dutch athelete with a shot and a half, fast as fc uk too.

im delighted - think cuellar is a quality signing. n now our defence looks well solid. agree with the poster above, i think routeledge should be given a chance. he has appeared to have a great pre-season. i wouldnt like to rule out bringing in a right sided midfielder(as i think we should have at least 2 players for every position) but i would like to see him against the icelanders.

I have said all summer we should go for HUNTELAAR of Ajax. He is their captain and has an amazing scoring record. Would have to be our major signing and new club record though to temp him away from his club and his boss, Marco V Basten. I think 18-20mil should do it. Looks like James Milner will be the next player in, with the Villa Blog saying a 6 Million deal is imminent, and also quite a few papers saying Villa are set to renew interest in signing him. Seems he is the player for the right of midfield. GET HIM IN MARTIN, he is quality. Just hope if we are in for him, he won't be called back this time.

The Toon have just bought another midfielder (but he is on loan), that could reduce his first team chances. I'm sure MON has other irons in the fire; J Cole, DLR and Joaquin to mention 3 players better than young James. We need to get the next couple of games out of the way first I reckon.

Perhaps Barry on left, Young on right, NRC and Petrov in the middle? Or Gab on right, Young on left, NRC, Petrov (holding) and Barry (covering for Young) in MF and Harewood as a lone striker? Would be a good tactic playing from home....work the Icelandics players socks off and see how they tire in MF and then if they do Gab to start plundering with Young joining in....good shape away from home to protect a lead too. KD would be quality...his finishing with our service could be great. We'd have 4 quality strikers of a similar level then competing hard for a starting berth. I think to get him and get Milner we'd be set for the season.

From looking at yesterday's game, we are soooooooooooo lopsided!! Saying that we were soooooooooooo lopsided all of last season! Why buy Routledge/Maloney, play them in all the pre season games and then when it comes to the crunch, leave them on the bench. For some reason he is scared of dropping Petrov. Reo is a centre midfielder and not a right midfielder. Barry and Reo should have played in the centre and Routledge/Maloney on the right. You can not put square pegs in round holes. Don't just pick your best players and try and fit them into the team (England have also been doing this for years!) play the players YOU bought in their natuural positions. I would put my mortgage on the same happening on Sunday. Reo will be on the right again. I love MON as a manager but his decision making before/during games bemuses me. Add to the lopsidedness (is that a word!?!) leaving subs on the bench too long before bringing them on. Players need more than 10 mins to get into games! I hope to god and pray we get Milner before Sunday and we finally have a balanced team! This is not a personal attack on MON, I addore the bloke and he has done wonders for the team. I just feel we could do even better, if we had a more balanced team. If he doesn't believe in the players HE bought, sell them and get them replaced.

In MON we trust...He played Reo-Coker on the right to help protect Gardner at right back. It was a bit of a bodged up line up but with new signings eligable and hopefully Sidwell back soon I think the line up will be slightly different!

I like the idea of Milner coming to us, but like other fans I can't understand why we don't use Maloney and Routeledge, route has had a great pre-season and looked decent last night, and I've always rated Maloney but he hasn't been given a chance.

AMS78 - When Martin O'Neil and Randy Lerner flash the CASH in front of Keegan and Ashley they will soon reconsider. Newcastle have debts and need the money, and they also need to sell before they can buy. We have put a 9 Million bid in for Milner, so if he was not for sale Keegan would have mentioned to the press that the Villa bid has been rejected. I think James Milner WILL BE coming to Villa.

Cant belive Ash Young has missed out on a place in the England squad, after a great finish to last season and some quality performances in the ITC/UEFA Cup, i would have thought he would of got in the squad with ease. Also quite surprised Ashton and Bent havent been included.

Joe cole scored for blues against pompey and his playin a fair gun game, so i doubt theyll let him go and he probably wouldnt want to leave anyways, and im not sure bout milner as well. Best go for SWP, even though he will probably never get it through his thick head that hell never get through to the first team at chelsea though but hes so determined to gain his place. Just like if Milner came, he would see his full potential reached but ah well, just hope we get our weight up with some good quality players and beat city

Any bloody winger would do, if they're left sided young can swap to the right, if right sided he can stay put. We need a new winger because maloney and routledge are good cover, but with another winger of youngs quality (and perhaps a new striker, and fully gelled defence) we could break into the top 4!!!!

Maloney and Ashley play much better on the left as it suits them to cut inside. It is the right we have ony Routledge. Personally I don't see Milner as being good enough but MON won't go abroad.

Offer KK 10mil for Milner and get Doyle in. Sorted IMO. As soon as Cuellar is fit then I think we should start him in ahead of Davies and depending on performance, rotate the two. Milner was very happy previously at VP and I hope he jumps at the chance of returning to play for MON.

i think we need 3 more a RM a DM and a striker... i know everyone thinks we need an AM De la Red been mentioned but if we have sidwell and barry personally they are better going forward.. thought barry was great in the attacking role against ManC.. so if we could get a good quality DM to play behind and protect or back 4 a bit maybe we would concede less goals...
