Stig, I thought Sky Sports News said that Kaboul had rejected both Sunderland and Aston Villa to sign for Portsmouth. Is that not the case now. I would certainly have Ashton, Milner and De La Red though. De La Red will be tough to get.

Rednapp says Pompey cannot afford Kaboul or Shorey so maybe Kaboul coming to Villa Laursen,Davies,Knight and Kaboul would make us flexible and strong with the option to rotate :)

Not that I mind... a fullback's a fullback and a true right back is truer than what we had before...but Shorey and Young smack as leftovers. Again, I think they are good, decent players...glad to have them...but they obviously aren't MON's first choice. If they were, they would have been bought 2 months ago. I like the idea that MON is building a young, English team...slowly. I also think the Barry Saga threw a pretty big monkey-wrench in the so-called "5-year plan". I think "the plan" called for buying a young, English RW this last year, only for SWP and Bentley to choose London over Brum. Millner is still a possibility. He's good enough for Villa, but not necesarily talented enough to grow into a world-class player. I haven't a clue who the first choice RB was since we have been linked to every RB there is and a few fictitious RB's as well. I think MON wanted to buy Sidwell last summer to pair with Barry (Barry playing more of a holding role, Sid adding more offence behind Carew), but didn't get it done til now. I think MON is still looking for a creative midfielder...the guy to unlock those defences determined not to let Gabby and A. Young behind them. De la Red, though, seems a stretch. Honestly, we scored a lot of goals last year with very defensive minded fullbacks. We were also very porous on defense, especially after Davies got hurt. Friedel is probably the best business done this summer. Probably some of the best business done in all the PL. 2.5M for a keeper that earns points. Even if he only plays for a year, that's the same amount of money we paid to borrow Carson for a year. It may not be the long-term solution MON had in mind when he loaned Carson, but it should pay some dividends. And now that I have completely lost track of why I started this post...at any rate enjoy my random thoughts.
