'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Middlesbrough Fan Interview On Luke Young

1) We are being linked with a move for Luke Young. Does it surprise you he wants to go after 12 months?

Yes I'm very surprised, he has settled really well at the club and was one of our better players last season. He looked very relaxed and happy at the Boro team photo-shoot yesterday.

2) What sort of a player would we be getting?

He is Mr Consistent. You would be getting a real work horse. Great footballing brain.

3) How would the Boro fans react if he returns to the Riverside this season in claret and blue?

We all know how fickle football fans are. If he was to go to you and he gave a decent enough reason then we would respect that but if he turned round and said he wanted to go because Boro were not ambitious enough then he would get booed off the pitch at the Riverside.

4) His price is said to be between £3.5m and £5m depending on which paper you read, not a bad quick profit, what do you think he is worth?

Yeah between £4m and £5m would be a good price for us and great bit of business but we don't have any cover at right-back so unless we have someone else lined up already this could just be paper talk.

5) How do you think Boro will get on this season and do you have any feeling (or indeed care) what Villa might do?!

Depending on if Alves and Mido can get a partnership going will be the key to our season. If so then a top ten finish is realistic. If not then we could end up in the same position as last year. Villa will do well again this season. I feel you guys need a goalscorer though. I don't think Carew has got 20 goals in him. You have quality all over the park and will create chances but not having a goalscorer could be the difference between finishing in the top 6 and finishing in the top 10. You'll come above us though!

An interesting insight. I have always liked Middlesborough and thats not only because they used to be full of ex-villans but because I think they are an ambitious team they get by with a reasonable budget. As a kid I admired Ravenelli, Emerson and of course Juninho. Always liked Southgate too. Hope they have a good season. Think Young will be a solid signing, he doesnt excite as much as Shorey, but to be honest I havent seen that much of him since his Spurs/Charlton days. Be nice to have a rightback!!
young_jonah
Ravenelli...wow, theres a player I haven't thought of in a while. Did you respect him for his football or the fact he just didn't care he had grey hair? ;)
Mayo_12
I wanted MON to buy him last season when he moved to Bor'o, I think Bor'o got him at the same time we were buying Ashley Young.

I'd be pleased as punch with this signing, I thought we would of made more of an effort last year for him.
TMorley
Grey hair? I'd be happy with hair of any colour! :o)

Interesting point regarding clinical striker and one that many on here agree with. Our "goals for column" was excellent last year, but should teams (and they will) wise up to our set pieces and try and limit the supply from AY I fear we have nobody who has that 85% conversion rate or can conjur a goal out of nothing and thus the goals could be harder to come by..... on the other hand with a "new look defence" we could stop shipping the sloppy goals we did last season, it is very much a wait and see, but personally I would like to see a "goalscorer" (few and far between and over valued they might be) at Villa park next season
fatloser
Yeah, the boro fans like him, which is always a good sign. I reckon he'll be a very good addition to our team and squad.
romanianvillain
Is there a difference between him and Aaron Hughes?I agree with what the Boro fan said about Carew.

Average signing. And it makes you wonder what was wrong with him last year. Lets not forget Shorey and Young have been the full backs in relegated sides in the last 2 years.
AMS78
At least they're not Middlesvilla anymore...(Southgate, Ehiogu, Wright, Boateng etc)
olafthegreat
Yes, and lets not forget that they have both featured for England in the past!
Nigel-not-Reo
A reasonably solid but unspectacular full back. Pretty much what was needed. Price of £4m according to Sky. Like Shorey he is a bit one paced but if he stays injury free will do a reasonable job. My only negative reaction to both transfers is that in 3 years time they will be worth very little in the transfer market due to their ages (Young 29 & Shorey 27). It would not be a surprise if both players were on £25K per week (£1.25m per year). So assuming both players were purchased for £4m, over 3 years with signing on fees and such they will cost us a combined figure of approx £16m, with no financial return. I would have preferrred 2 younger players who could have been sold on or who we would get more years out of.
voiceoftheholte
At £6 million i think we have got the better deal, although he will be good for you lot.

Looks like our initial opinions have been confirmed by our Boro friend. Welcome aboard Luke Young. I could never quite understand why we didn't make more of an attempt to snap the guy up last summer when he left The Valley, but no doubt MON had valid reasons. I wanted him back then, I'm glad we've got him now. A good solid, experienced specialist right full back, who is also pretty decent when pushing forward. Good piece of business Martin.
glensider
Whatever we paid for him, 3m, 4m, whatever, its money that had to be spent. We couldn't enter another campaign without a specialist right back. Presumably Southgate didn't particularly want to lose him (as with us and Barry), so we had to dig deep to prise him away from The Riverside.
