Monday's Aston Villa Transfer Talk

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is apparently set to bid 9m swoop for Tottenham's Younes Kaboul and Reading's Nicky Shorey according to The Sun. Why mention it? Well, we have also been linked with both players, so maybe we'll also join in the fun!?

The papers are full to the brim of the Gareth Barry saga, the Daily Star says the 18million move, after Barry and his agent changed their minds from their agreement to stay on Thursday, is now in the hands of the Anfield club's much loved American owners.

The Independent say the deal should be completed this week. I truly hope so, I hope the saga is ended, I wanted him to stay but it appears he is dead set on going despite the meeting last week, so out he must go, for the right price and lets move on with players who respect Aston Villa and the fans. They say an 18m cash deal will be done, hopefully they won't play games and bid late in the window to stop Villa using that money to replace Barry.

The Telegraph say there are still obstacles to the deal. They claim we agreed a 19m deal including a player last week. The info from Villa is no bid was made last week and especially no bid 15 mins after any deadline. The paper says After three months of public wrangling, the two clubs agreed an estimated 19 million fee - involving cash and a player, believed to be Steve Finnan - last week, only for a dispute over the schedule of payments to hold the deal up once again. Barry and his agent, Alex Black, expect Liverpool to return with another offer. But Aston Villa have set the Merseyside club a rigid list of demands, while the issue has been further muddied by the prospect that Arsenal could enter the race to sign the 27-year-old.

Meanwhile The Mirror say Villa are about to 'snatch' Manchester United defender Danny Simpson from the reaches of Blackburn Rovers who were set to offer him a one-year-deal. The 21 year old has been told by Sir Alex Chewalot that he will lend him out to a Premier League team this season following time at Ipswich last season. Manchester City are also said to be interested.

We at pompey seem to be linked with players that are linked with you at Villa, Newcastle. Everton, Man City!

We should not be linked to loan signings we are a bigger club than that! Well 2 more weeks of fustration and worrying to go...! I hope we go mental the next 2 weeks and spend a ridiculous amount of money to bring in lots and lots of shiny new players.

It is the thought of another loan deal that does my head in, if he works out it just trains him up for Utd. We are trying to break the top four, we won't do that by loaning their players!

If its 2 way race between us and pompey for a player this window we'll lose everytime. Pompey pay more wages, they have UEFA football and just won the FA cup. Plus Portsmouth has the millioanires sandbanks nearby for their overpaid players to live in. Id choose pompey over at the moment Villa and im a villa fan!

I dont have a problem being linked to loan signings, not at the this moment in time!! We need numbers on board, even if just to try and hold our own this season, and if we're not securing our top targets (whoever they are), then we have to make allowances, and loan signings DO give us that option. BUt who the hell is simpson?

If we bring in players on loan , this does not really inspire me to think we are pushing to top four place next year. i haven't seen the lad simpson play, he could be sh@t hot , but the message it sends out to the fans and more importantly at the moment the players , and the potential targets , is that we have not got the desire to break in to the top four .If he is that good that he can play week in week out for the club we should get the cheque book out and sign him , so he is OURS , and we don't have to give him back to United twice the player he was when joined . . It is a vicious circle in that respect , although MON doesn't want to spunk money on people he does not think are value for money, BUT you have to be seen to be ambitious , to attract ambitious players .

Absolutely right nick1. We need permanent signings of quality and well established players. Helping other teams with their player improvements doesn't make me very happy at all.

can some1 please tell me why we cant seem to sign quality international players? MON seems happy to sign average players, and then hope his inspirational team talks will do the rest. to think we only bid 10M for bentley is embarrassing! i can safely say that we wont buy 1 quality player for over 10M THIS YEAR!! how can we expect to make improvements with a squad smaller and WORSE (with the loss of barry) than last year. If we finish in the top half this season it will feel like we've won the league!

Simpson gone to Blackburn ! Proves my point that because we aren't acting like a big cub at the moment , we cant attract 2nd teamers on loan from the mancs . Agree with rhymez1 that i don't see a "big name" signing coming in . Anyone would be nice now though, newsnow is giving me a headache but i am staring at it hope of seeing David Villa For Villa headline i have been dreaming about all summer pops up! The best player in europe by far in my humble opinion.(i am a season ticket holder at the mestalla so know how good is first hand) Valencia are desperate for cash by the way Randy if you are reading !

It's no good being too proud to accept young loan players. In principal it's better to have someone on loan than have a gaping hole in our defence for another season. The issue really is for O'Neill to "pull" someone who is real qualith and not another Bardsley or Carson.

Thought about season tickets for myself and my 2 lads this season, glad I didnt! About sums it up again doesnt it? Remember when Ron Saunders ( Yeah I know Barton won the cup ) had the best team in Europe but wasnt allowed to push on, Little and Gregory were on the verge of something as well..... Deja Vu?? Im afraid that when the likes of Spuds and Pompey are blowing us out of the water, and the people entrusted to run our club dither and make do, we must reflect rather more on out "Proud History" than our immediate "Bright Future"....!

nick1-how can you possibly suggest the Villa is not ambitious with all that has been achieved at the Club over the last 2 years since O'Neill amd Lerner moved in. It's clear to me that they will spend what is necessary to keep moving us forward but if players don't want to come to Villa yet, there's not much you can do about it is there?

Stourbridge Villan - As true Villa fans, we have to look at the bigger picture ie results and progress and not get too bogged down as to which players are sold and bought. We know very little of the fact in transfer dealings and for that matter which players are worth their salt and which ones are a pain in the ars*e or disruptive. There must be so many complex factors in building a united team. Personally, I trust O'neill implicitly to do everything he possibly can to keep moving us forward-and I feel sure that Lerner will support him 110%. What more can we ask? Unfortunately Birmingham is the worst part of the UK to expect millionaire players to settle so perhaps we should suggest we move Villa Park to Portugal or Spain.

Villacross , i wasn't suggesting we are not ambitious, and the progress made has being fantastic , the club is certainly heading in the right direction and randy and MON are the right guys for the job , The point i was making is that the perception of the club from a big name player, for example, is that tottenham are a bigger club than us , now i know that that is tosh , but we are looking out , and they are looking in . Why aren't these players like kaboul and Shorey chomping at the bit to join us ! If we had signed one big name signing it would have turned there heads and showed everyone else that we mean business, and therefore atrracted more class and made the transfer window less painful for us all. Well thats what would happen in a perfect world !

Also Villacross , I stand by my point in terms of loan players , we should be bigger and better than that. We have got too gaping holes in our defence but a loan player i believe is never as commited to the cause as a signing . Carlton cole ,scott carson and phil bardsely would anyone want them back on loan playing there hearts out ? Or pushing the boat and getting someone who has a real desire to play for us.

We need a right back chaps, even my shelties know that, so lets sign Phil Bardsley from Sunderland, now replaced by Pascal Chimbonda. I jest of course, but that just shows how desperate I now am. Wakey-Wakey Martin!!

Villacross I agree with you 100% about results on the pitch. I'm not concerned about who we may or may not be linked with. Transfer business is conducted in a very private manner until the deal is done. There is so much negativity about it's unbelievable. UTV \o/

We don't need the money off Barry to buy.....we have the money to buy anyone, getting them to come to Birmingham seems to be the problem.
