Tuesday's Aston Villa Press Talk & Rumours

Tuesday's Aston Villa Press Talk & Rumours

This is a pretty obvious one but according to the Daily Star Aston Villa will make a £4.5million bid for Reading and England international left-back Nicky Shorey. We've been linked with him several times since Reading got relegated and with the awful injury to Dutch international Wilf Bouma, the need for another left-back is even more urgent.

The Sun have picked up on the story that Adidas were set to sponsor Gareth Barry to the tune of £500 000 but only if he moved to Liverpool as they provide the kits for the Anfield lot.

Other reports are saying that Barry could be hit hard by the tax man if he stays at Villa and has his testimonial as part of a new contract. Hogwash, Barry has already said he'd look at doing what Niall Quinn did and donate the proceeds to charity, I can't see fans turning up for a testimonial for any highly paid premiership player UNLESS it was for charity?

Sky Sports have a report on Morocco international left-back Badr El-Kaddouri claiming Villa want him. The 27-year-old who plays for Dynamo Kiev told that there is interest from both Villa and Newcastle United. He said: 'There have been enquiries from Aston Villa since last year, however since Saturday, Aston Villa want me. They are an ambitious club, my agent is looking into it. He told me Newcastle have made enquiries about me and they are also willing to sign me.'

Setanta amongst others are linking us to Real Madrid midfielder Ruben de la Red. Liverpool have also been linked. They claim the 23-year-old is 'flattered by the interest from clubs, both at home and abroad.' Another report says: 'According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Aston Villa have made a £9.4million offer for Real Madrid midfielder Ruben de la Red. The Spain international has been offered a four-year contract, with Real coach Bernd Schuster yet to make a decision on his future.'

Spurs defender Younes Kaboul is still being linked with Villa along with Sunderland and Portsmouth.

Ex Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen is being linked with a move to Stoke. The free agent has also been linked to Middlesbrough and Galatasaray. He is currently with The Potters according to manager Pulis on Radio Stoke: 'Two or three clubs have been interested in Thomas but he is with us at the minute.'

Well, the signings have got to start flowing now. I'm sure O'Neill and the board now what they're doing. There is no way we can enter the season with the squad as depleated as this. Even 5 more signings will leave us hoping no one else gets injured. We shouldn't be at this stage. In MON we trust.

even rumours and speculation are welcome at this time, if we've bid 9.4mil for De La red then thats the type of signs we've been looking for. UTV, have faith.
29/07/2008 12:15:00
Shorey could be needed now with Bouma on the hospital bed, he's not a bad player. Anyone have any idea about this El-Kaddouri dude? Position, etc?
29/07/2008 12:30:00
I'd prefer to go for Shorey, only because I like the thought of a mainly english/british squad plus with him we know what we get, that's not alot of rumours considering how short we are, I like the de la red link he's class we've never had a decent play-maker since merse left.

Shorey would be a good move, and i am pretty sure he would come too. Don't forget Bouma can also play centre half. It would make the LB & Cb competetive for places come December when Wilf will be hopefully back. just need to sort the RB position.
29/07/2008 12:56:00
I'm just about ready to take any defensive player going. Am I missing anyone but do we only have 2 fit actual defenders in laursen and knight. Its somewhat disturbing. If we could get shorey and kaboul signed up by the end of the week I'd be alot happier, assuming MON is interested in them in the first place.
29/07/2008 13:55:00
Nice point HolteEnder, alot of us (myself included) forget that Bouma can play centre-back I think. I'd definately prefer him than Knight in there if it came down to it - be good to get Curtis back. The signings need to start flowing this week though.
29/07/2008 14:34:00
Agreed, Knight does lack a bit of quality, I doubt he was ever intended to be first choice. Any idea when Davies will be fit?
29/07/2008 14:41:00
Shorey would be a decent signing imo. The others I dont have much knowledge about.
